I know the rule of thumb is whatever it takes to make your dom/me happy but if you can't be who you are during your vanilla exchanges could you silence yourself willingly?

I don't want to be with someone who doesn't like the joy I find in life. However, ways we express our joy can be channelled into other behaviors. It does no good for someone to take something away without giving a replacement to fill the void. If you can't make jokes, can you express your joy in dance or in writing or singing? The problem comes when something that is in fact part of one's identity (as you suggest in the question), is required to be removed. What is left with the person then? frustration and misery and loss of identity in their own context.
Also, the question is - for how long? I mean if the D-type wants it to be not around him, that's one thing... it's something else if it is to be eradicated from one's personality. In the end, this is part of personality. This does not change. People are foolish to try to remove a part of someone's personality. It reminds me of the old joke - don't try to teach a pig to sing. It hurts your ears and frustrates the pig.
As for me, personally? I tried once. Thankfully, I've gotten smart since then and realized how foolish it is to try to fit myself into someone else's definition of me. If they don't like how I am, my personality, my way of interacting in the world IN GENERAL, then there's no hope for us. (and vice versa). Edges can be rubbed down, but the only way to turn a square into a circle is by destroying a huge hunk of it.
