Sanity -> Energy Drinks (3/26/2010 10:07:21 PM)

I don't drink alcohol any more, I don't abuse narcotics, stopped when I was about 30.

I even quit smoking a few years back.

But I gamble some, and do I like the regular Red Bull energy drink.

A lot.

Rock Star is pretty good too, the double strength kind... I really, really like them.

I drink a lot of coffee too.

I know whats in the coffee, caffeine, of course. But what are all these other ingredients good for- Taurine, Milk Thistle, Guarana, Ginsing, B Vitamins. There are a few others as well.

Some of the energy drinks give me the jitters, you know, just a so-so caffeine buzz thats no better than Mtn Dew of coffee. But some of them make me feel really good for a day or two. More alert, more focused, even a little happier and a lot more productive. Too much is too much though... (sigh).

There's a lot of sugar in them too, and some have corn syrup, or other sweetners which some people maintain are bad for you.

Any favorites? Or opinions of which are best, or worst? Do you think they're all bad for you? Red Bull is expensive, but its my pick for #1 because its has very noticeable effects that I think are great, and they last for days.

I stick to diet MD.  Do you know that there are 12 teaspoons of sugar in those energy drinks and the crash afterwards is hard?

Or was that 12 tablespoons?    My mind is wandering off this morning.

Uuuugggghhhh.
No energy drinks for this guy. I have way way to much energy already (people get tired just watching me)-energy drinks just make me all twisty.

Short of doing the basic research again, the only one I can remember for sure is the guarana. This is a close relative of caffeine and is something like 4 times more potent than caffeine. It comes from south america (plant based extract). Most energy drinks in addition to the guarana also contain caffeine too, and as stated by Shahar, lots of sugar.

The ginseng is the only thing that is actually good for you (besides the vitamins). Check with your local health food/vitamin outlets. Get some liquid ginseng for an energy boost. You can drink it straight (tastes gnarly) or mix it with anything you want.  This will provide a good mental boost and a modest physical boost.

LaTigresse -> RE: Energy Drinks (3/27/2010 6:50:29 AM)

The closest thing to an energy drink I consume is my morning cafe au lait, but it does not contain as much caffiene as a regular cup of coffee. Which is fine because I do not need the caffiene. I drink it because I love the flavour. I occasionally drink a cup of Celestial Seasonings green/white tea because green tea is supposed to be good for a body and that is the only brand/type that I enjoy the flavour.

Otherwise my beverage of choice is good old H2O.

I've never tried an 'energy drink' and have no reason to.

littlewonder -> RE: Energy Drinks (3/27/2010 7:11:13 AM)

energy drinks make me feel sick. They make my heart jump outta my chest and I get all shakey and fidgety. Ick.

LadyEllen -> RE: Energy Drinks (3/27/2010 7:35:05 AM)

I once tried an energy drink on a long drive. It worked brilliantly - there is no way you can fall asleep at the wheel when youre dying for a pee.

I've never seen a Redline, I'll watch out for it and try it when I find one. And I don't mind the sugar in the Red Bull, I'm active enough that I burn it straight away.

Especially with a Red Bull in me. [8D]

Try the small size, or just partial portions. I can't even drink the full sized Red Bull. Thats too much! One small 8.4 oz / 250 ml can,  and I'm good for the rest of the day. And it doesn't make me feel jittery either, just more alert and energetic.

[sm=insane.gif] RockStar has caffeine...really?

i choose that over RedBull because it is cheaper.

Sanity -> RE: Energy Drinks (3/27/2010 8:28:56 AM)

I can even drink the double size, double strength variety of RockStar without ill effects, and it is pretty good. I think the Red Bull may have more ginseng or taurine or something it it though, because it seems to give me nicer wings.

Hmm, pardon my late intrusion here [sm=alien.gif] but aren't energy drinks generally bad for the organism?

http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/88066.php

There are quite a few studies that have shown correlations between heart disease and the consumption of energy drinks (plus increasing the risk of cancer).

A really good "natural" way to get more energy is to drink mate (tea) or take guarana and kola nuts in powder form mixed with water or juice. The last two taste rather aweful lol and the tea well you either love or hate it. [:D]

Intrude away! From your link:

I'm flabbergasted...

Say it aint so! [:D]

LOL Muahaha, absolutely so ;)

TheHeretic -> RE: Energy Drinks (3/27/2010 10:11:11 AM)

Other than my very strong morning coffee, I rarely take these kinds of stimulants.  A Red Bull once in a while, if I'm going to be doing something late into the night, but the crash always hits me hard.

If they ever put the coke back in Coke, that would probably change.

Hi gorgeous! Yep me too, but as long as you get sugarfree, I think it's fine. I drink about 4 a day. Yes I am a caffeine addict. What can you do? [8D]. I don't ever get jittery or weird from it but maybe because I don't ever try to not drink it.  Even with all of that, I still make usually a daily walk from my office to the coffee shop for a magnum latte, which has 4 shots of espresso. No wonder I don't sleep. ;)

Sanity -> RE: Energy Drinks (3/27/2010 10:16:44 AM)

I don't get a crash from one little Red Bull. Just a nice energy and brain boost that lasts a day or two.

I wonder if my metabolism different is why.
