Sanity -> Phony products impress federal energy program (3/28/2010 1:02:40 PM)

From the "Your Government At Work" department -

Phony products impress federal energy program

WASHINGTON – Fifteen phony products — including a gasoline-powered alarm clock — won a label from the government certifying them as energy efficient in a test of the federal "Energy Star" program.

Investigators concluded the program is "vulnerable to fraud and abuse." A report released Friday said government investigators tried to pass off 20 fake products as energy efficient, and only two were rejected. Three others didn't get a response. The program run by the Energy Department and Environmental Protection Agency is supposed to identify energy-efficient products to help consumers. Tax credits and rebates serve as incentives to buy Energy Star products.

But the General Accountability Office, Congress' investigative arm, said Energy Star doesn't verify claims made by manufacturers — which might explain the gasoline-powered alarm clock, not to mention a product billed as an air room cleaner that was actually a space heater with a feather duster and fly strips attached, and a computer monitor that won approval within 30 minutes of submission.

The alarm clock's size — 1 1/2-feet high and 15 inches wide — and model name "Black Gold" should have raised alarms with Energy Star, but the automated review system didn't catch on to the deception.

"EPA officials confirmed that because the energy-efficiency information was plausible, it was likely that no one read the product description information," GAO said.

No Sanity,my Doctors and I will see to my health care.....this hasn't changed, despite you're silliness.

At least it hasn't changed, yet. Where can I get one of those alarm clocks, and what kind of decibles does it put out while running?

slvemike4u -> RE: Phony products impress federal energy program (3/28/2010 1:51:50 PM)

Well aside from the laughs content Thad,do you find any other validity or substance to this thread of Sanity's...or is this just another example that Sanity is the right counterpoint to Brain here on CollarMe?

Thadius -> RE: Phony products impress federal energy program (3/28/2010 2:31:16 PM)

There is some validity in his claim. C'mon you have to admit that a product named "Black Gold" that is applying for an energy efficiency sticker, probably should have raised a flag with somebody in those agencies. The part that I find valid is the suggestion that the government cannot handle simple decisions on things like this, how can they then be counted on to decide what procedure or coverage is appropriate for our health care. As we all know, one size does not fit all.

Musicmystery -> RE: Phony products impress federal energy program (3/28/2010 2:35:03 PM)

By this argument, how can they be trusted to run a military?

Shall we disband it immediately?

Yet that's the argument you yourself are using, is it not? One dimwitted desk jockey, or 5 or 6 dimwitted desk jockeys, in some government department is proof that the government can't be trusted to do anything at all? Come on.

I don't see how I am arguing that point. As far as I know, folks were free to shop around for the coverage that they can afford or desire, be it a full coverage all the bells and whistles included, or a more modest major medical with a higher deductible. Doesn't the new law sort of whittle down those choices, as there will be a new group deciding what is acceptable coverage, and with the excise taxes on policies that go above an beyond that won't those bigger policies be dropped in favor of the minimums? Or at least I thought that was the argument in favor of the "cadillac taxes".

slvemike4u -> RE: Phony products impress federal energy program (3/28/2010 5:21:04 PM)

Irregardless of what point you do see yourself making Thad...the one being put forth here by Sanity's silly little thread just doesn't hold water.
Do you really envision any scenario where Govt bureaucrats are making health care decisions without the input of your medical professional ie:your doctor.....perhaps Sanity can imagine a world where govt "Black Gold" heart pacers are installed directly into ailing chests without benifit of medical checks and balances.....but I hardly think you are that gullible or that big an alarmist.

Sanity -> RE: Phony products impress federal energy program (3/28/2010 5:45:35 PM)

Bureaucrats are handing out Energy Star certifications without the input of qualified engineers, or even any basic testing by an average joe off the street, mike.

And that translates to Doctors being removed from the equation Sanity?
Not likely...not even close.

Don't some on the left already call for such?[8|]

Interesting perspective.

They do already. I know somebody personally, and was there to hear, that they were told that Medicare and Medicaid wouldn't pay for them to get an AIDS test. That came straight from the doctor and the nurse. Can't wait to see what happens when they have the same control over my health care.

This is a pretty good listen...Check it out!!! Very funny. Goes to show what an idiot Palin truly is.

This is the woman that is leading the tea bagger movement?

slvemike4u -> RE: Phony products impress federal energy program (3/28/2010 6:11:15 PM)

Now what sort of switch and bait is that Thad....Medicaid and Medicare's policies did not change(I have no personal knowledge on what the practice is)as to what procedures they do and do not cover due to this particular bill being passed last Sunday...which is of course the whole point of Sanity's chicken little act.

Sanity -> RE: Phony products impress federal energy program (3/28/2010 6:15:30 PM)

Its going to have to be rationed, because there are finite resources. And the decisions as to where the axes fall will be medical decisions, made by far off bureaucrats.

With this going on how are we going to be able to trust those that are running Obama's death panels?

Perfectionist fallacy, Thadius.

Police can't stop crime, so we shouldn't have police. Doctors can't stop disease, so we shouldn't have health care. That kind of thing. Businesses go under, so we shouldn't trust business either.

It's a poor argument.

Sanity -> RE: Phony products impress federal energy program (3/28/2010 6:28:50 PM)

If I had just spent an extra couple of hundred dollars on any kind of new appliance just because it was 'Energy Star compliant' I would be really pissed off right now.

Wouldn't you?
