Where is the line drawn panda? Why cant burn victims have cosmetic surgery. Or if you're born ugly, or if you want a sex change operation, you won't be covered? Why not cosmetic surgery... people scream if insurance companies won't provide such things now, and call them evil. The costs are going to eat us alive.

Because a burn scar can cause other complications, depending on its location, beyond just the social stigma.

There is a huge difference between a medically necessary cosmetic correction and elective cosmetic surgery.

Actually the military is run by people who have served in the military, gone through military, schools, colleges,  and academy's, and have earned their rank.

It is overseen by the government, and elected officials, who may or may not have served a single day of their lives in uniform. (McDonald's don't count for you liberal arts majors[;)]).

So the fallacy of the military being run well by the government, is just that, a fallacy, and a total bullshit argument.

So Bush "dubya" was the tremendous military mind that proclaimed that Sadam was linked to 9-11? Off to war we went.

What were his tremendous military credentials?

thornhappy -> RE: Phony products impress federal energy program (3/28/2010 8:37:01 PM)

You mean like how welfare was expanded during the Clinton administration so that the welfare caseload dropped by 50%?

BTW, the last I saw if you're uninsured you buy insurance, I haven't seen anywhere that you get free care.

Do bureaucracies ever shrink themselves? Do politicians ever cut entitlement programs? No, they continuously expand, and as a nation we're teetering on the brink of insolvency right now.

Nonsense. What happened to co-pays? Or that elective surgery isn't covered?

Or that homeless people now don't go to homeless shelters. Why are hospitals more attractive?

You're not aware that this is just the first step? The Democrats have been pretty open about the fact that their goals don't stop with the legislation they just passed. And the welfare rollback under Clinton was an anomaly, forced through by Newt Gingrich, which this is the opposite direction of that, proving my point.

Entitlements are eating more and more of the budget and its literally breaking us. I'd be more amenable to all these free government cheese programs if we had the money but especially at this point we just don't.

Obviously that is what they mean by the placebo effect.  Nothing new, it happens in medicine all the time. You can find it when you do a clinical trial.

From the "Your Government At Work" department -

quote:

Phony products impress federal energy program

WASHINGTON – Fifteen phony products — including a gasoline-powered alarm clock — won a label from the government certifying them as energy efficient in a test of the federal "Energy Star" program.

Investigators concluded the program is "vulnerable to fraud and abuse." A report released Friday said government investigators tried to pass off 20 fake products as energy efficient, and only two were rejected. Three others didn't get a response. The program run by the Energy Department and Environmental Protection Agency is supposed to identify energy-efficient products to help consumers. Tax credits and rebates serve as incentives to buy Energy Star products.

But the General Accountability Office, Congress' investigative arm, said Energy Star doesn't verify claims made by manufacturers — which might explain the gasoline-powered alarm clock, not to mention a product billed as an air room cleaner that was actually a space heater with a feather duster and fly strips attached, and a computer monitor that won approval within 30 minutes of submission.

The alarm clock's size — 1 1/2-feet high and 15 inches wide — and model name "Black Gold" should have raised alarms with Energy Star, but the automated review system didn't catch on to the deception.

"EPA officials confirmed that because the energy-efficiency information was plausible, it was likely that no one read the product description information," GAO said.

~ Fast 'ya know what's Funny? ~

It seems that because this occurred now this bureaucracy is being tinted as representing this Administration. The comments representing justification or accusation are reflective of political party affiliation. I can't imagine MM defending this representation of the government if this came to light during the Bush Administration. But because it happened under Obama this represents government efficiency.

I guarantee you a few of the useless bureaucrats who evaluated these products overlapped to the prior administration. Considering its so hard for Obama to get people appointed he has to do it after dark and after Congress adjourns just to seek a few through the formerly standard process; these people most likely aren't new. What's the matter - the 'Blame Bush' milk expired, and even the hard cores don't think anyone will buy it any more?

This isn't an example of Democratic waste, or Republican waste; it's representative of the general, and yet not addressed issue - government waste. There is too much money on the lines for it to matter which political party happens to be in charge. It's better to appreciate that, as the cards are stacked there is only one certainty - non of us are.

However it's really amusing; stipulating that I didn't read every line of each and every post, I don't think anything in the article or in subsequent posts documented a party affiliation of this example of our government at work. Yet - it seems that the opinion of what this represented was based more about a party in charge versus how to address yet another waste of resources.

Pointing to a much bigger problem that I feel represents perfectly my rationalization for having no faith in seeing any cooperation coming in the foreseeable future which will turn things around.

Good night all - this thread was an amusing bedtime read.

I did call Sanity on a few of his excesses.

By this argument, how can they be trusted to run a military?
Shall we disband it immediately?

Sorry MM, my mistake, I interpreted your comparison to a running the agency in the face of any negativity assigned to running the military to be administration specific. I take it back - had this occurred under Bush you would have made a similar comment.

Glad you liked it Merc. And no, I didn't make any party distinctions regarding the running of government bureaucracies. Like you, I know they're wasteful and woefully inefficient regardless of who is running them, and I never said otherwise.

As thornhappy pointed out though, the Republicans managed to get Bill Clinton to trim some of the waste back, around 1994 or so.
