I hope it passes. Legalizing Marijuana to Be Put to a Vote in California - ABC News Richard Lee is a well-known businessman in Oakland, Calif. His business is marijuana -- and it is booming. From his coffee house selling medical marijuana, to his trade school for marijuana growers, Oaksterdam University, Lee employs 58 people and pays hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in taxes. But last week, Lee achieved what is arguably his biggest success yet, after California's secretary of state ruled that his campaign to make marijuana legal had gathered enough signatures to place the issue before voters this November. "I've always thought since I grew up in the '70s that cannabis prohibition is unjust and hypocritical," Lee said. The initiative would allow adults 21 or older to possess up to an ounce of marijuana for personal use. Damn hippies.... Oh wait that's a different topic. I am actually hoping that it passes, and then spreads like wildfire across the other states. This prohibition has cost everyday folks too much already, and hasn't accomplished a thing except fill some cells and get some fine money. For the record I am allergic to it, but haven't seen anything that leads me to believe it is any worse than liquor, and actually think the effects are much more acceptable to society than drinking.

You know, this is one issue where I'm actually exactly neutral. I can see a few arguments, especially easing up on judicial obligations. At the same time, though, a lot of the pro arguments are pretty facile, including the fantasy that people involved in criminal activity will simply turn around and pay taxes. And it still leaves open the conflict with federal law.

I do not believe this is the first time this has been on the ballot in CA, however it has failed before. Not because people are so against it, as the people that support it celebrate before they go and vote and then can't remember what they where going to do and they just decide to get something to eat instead Actually I think the last time it was on the ticket a ton of money from religion helped convince people that if you approve of this law, then next cocaine will become legal and rape will happen across the land and laws will no longer exist

In late 1995 and early 1996, Dennis Peron, founder of the Cannabis Buyer’s Club (later the Cannabis Cultivators Club) in San Francisco, gave California voters Proposition 215, a statewide initiative to make cannabis legal as medicine. The medical marijuana initiative collected 750,000 signatures, made the California ballot, and passed by 56% of the vote in November 1996... Interestingly, in 1996, more voters in California voted for medical marijuana than voted for Bill Clinton. Considering all the research that has been done over the last 20 years alone..."Reefer Madness" racist/bigoted attitudes and opinions about cannabis should most definitely die with the generation that spawned them. this slave is allergic to aspirin, but just because it makes HER sick, doesn't mean she believes others shouldn't have access to it---this slave sees no difference.

I'm not positive, but doesn't federal law make this state law meaningless ?

The biggest social benefit here would be yanking the financial rug out from under the gangs. Move that money into the tax-paying economy, and steal the bullets right out of their guns. Unfortunately, I think if it does go through we will promptly see the Feds assert their primacy, and while use and possession might be officially tolerated, distribution will remain in the underground economy. The stoners are happy, but it does the rest of us no real good at all. Of course, if it does pass, there will very likely be a bbq at my house, with Pink Floyd music, and a firepit for anybody who wants to roast marshmallows.

Obama has directed the DEA (the ones enforcing federal law) to make their absolute last priority busting pot users in states where it's legal. So if someone is following all the state laws, then they are on the safe side of a gray area. The DEA DID bust a grower in Highlands Ranch recently, and they took pains to charge him with charges that were violations of state laws. The local cops don't know the new laws, and the feds are swamped right now with breakins at legal dispensaries to worry about small growers Basically, the laws have been passed, and the judges will have to interpret them because they are not clear.
