clear and simple...i chose not to hunt, kill or eat deer.

This is just me, but I was raised that as long as you use as much of the animal as possible, and appreciate the life it gave to nourish you, it's okay. Even better if it had a good life before it died - as (we hope) a wild animal would, unlike a factory-raised chicken, for example.  That's a bit spiritual, a bit practical, and a bit less sympathetic to the cute and cuddly ones, but it's how I was brought up.

I was raised on a ranch, and our animals were all free-range, or close to it.  I also hunted.  I can raise 'em, kill 'em, skin 'em, butcher 'em, and eat 'em.  I leave the cooking to my houseboy.

Be well.

Venison is a common item in upscale groceries in the northeast.  So much for that reason.  I can't wait to hear the next one you cook up.
~stef

It's also available in both the midwest and the south, at least in areas where I've lived.  I didn't see the post to which you were replying, but often the deer is farm-raised so if the objection was shooting it's also invalid.

yes, i know they are, let me rephrase my original statement...i won't hunt, eat deer meat or anything else that cannot be rugularly found in a grocery store. i am very picky about what i eat.

Regularly found in grocery stores?

Venison is a regular item in some GEORGIA stores. Harry’s Market, a popular shopping experience with more than one store, has venison and other not-so-common meats.

How about veal and lamb? (And don’t start on inhumane veal…government standards have changed even if stories of old have not)

Poor defenseless and beautiful cattle…..do you know how cattle are slaughtered after spending their entire life eating grain in warm barns and grazing in pastures?

So why did you make those other excuses? Is it that hard to say 'I chose not to eat deer' without suppling inaccurate reasons?

michaelGA -> RE: Ok is it normal for Deer Burger to make you sick? (4/3/2006 10:05:18 PM)

i will only eat what i have listed. no sheep, lamb, deer, turtle, snake, snails, goat, horse, cat, dog, shark, eel, or anything else i consider wierd meat.

So instead of  trying to defend your actions just admit..you are a picky, plebeian eater.

thinking of making lambchops this weekend...with minted wine sauce.

michaelGA -> RE: Ok is it normal for Deer Burger to make you sick? (4/3/2006 10:11:26 PM)

plebian....hmmmmm...a new word...will have to research that further...LOL

So now it's only "wierd meat" that you won't eat and it has absolutely nothing to do with what's available in stores as you so recently claimed?  Gotcha.  I suppose that means balut is out of the question?.

whatever balut is

michael, I would appreciate it very much if you would go back to page 1 of this thread and read my last post to you on that page. You implied with your answers that hunting is wrong because deer are beautiful creatures.

I'm sorry if I have come off as so offended...but in all honesty I truly am. I have been criticized many times over for my decision to hunt. The funny thing though is that all of the times I have been criticized by an "animal lover" for hunting, I have found that they care much less for the animals in question than I myself do.

I'd like to ask you michael, how many times have you broken ground in the hot August sun to plant food FOR the deer?  How many times have you trudged across fields in subzero temperatures in snow that is 3 feet deep with bales of alfalfa or 50 lb sacks of corn so that the deer can survive the long winter when the food is buried too far under the frozen landscape for them to access it?

I do these things regularly. I devote a large portion of my life to nature. When I do make a kill, I thank the good Lord for the gift I have been given. I pray for the animal's soul. And I am cautious to waste nothing so as not to make that animal's death be in vain.

Do you too go that far or do you just open your mind enough to say..."Oh, they're too cute" and never far enough to see the complete picture?

LadySeraphina -> RE: Ok is it normal for Deer Burger to make you sick? (4/3/2006 10:22:42 PM)

Beautifully, elegantly, and eloquently put, mistoferin.  I must confess that I haven't gone that far myself, so I give you much props for that.  In fact, I feel a bit misty.  Good for you, but you don't really need my approval anyway.

i am not a rancher, farmer or any of that. i just refuse to kill.

also, on a side note...i believe if i said the sky is blue...i would get arguements that it's not...maybe i'm wrong.

But you do kill michael...every time you lay down your almighty dollar at the grocery store for that chicken breast or that juicy steak. It's a supply and demand industry...and every time you make a purchase you create the demand. You just don't get your hands bloody.

As for the last part of your reply....you get arguments michael because you frequently make statements that are rigid and don't show any real insight into the knowledge of the full picture. You are unwavering in your responses and quite frequently come across as intolerant, if not downright critical of anyone's views but your own.

I say that not to criticize you...but hopefully so that you can see.

Archer -> RE: Ok is it normal for Deer Burger to make you sick? (4/3/2006 10:36:16 PM)

You left out the one other ethical consideration, at least for the meals we get from hunting we do our own killing instead of hireing someone to kill for us.

Recognizing that someone has to kill it has a whole new meaning when you process an animal you have killed yourself. You don't take that for granted as much.

Also when you consider that success rates for deer hunting are overall pretty low, and when you have actually had to pass shots up because you snapped a twig, or the wind shifted or you moved just a little bit and the deer saw you, the idea that they are defenseless, falls flat.
Their hearing is 4-5 times that of our ears, their sight although limited in the color spectrum see's slight movement much better than our own, and their sense of smell is more accute than many animals, they run faster, jump higher, and are in THEIR woods that they know better than you and I. They can't fight back directly but they are adapted to avoid hunters of both the 4 and 2 legged kind very well. I know I see 15 or 20 deer for every one I get in range and of those I get in range still have closer than even money of getting away without an arrow even leaving the bow.

Waiting for next year with an empty freezer again this year,

Archer

You are wrong, the sky isn't blue.  As I had to point out to RavenofPK a while back, it only appears blue due to the effect of Rayleigh scattering.

Erin has already pointed out that while you'te not the one operating the pneumatic gun, you're still responsible for the killing of cattle every time you buy beef, so I don't need to explain that one to you.

What's next?

And of course as I was posting you covered the point to some extent at least, LOL
