slvemike4u -> Father of dead Marine ordered to pay Phelps legal fees (3/30/2010 1:38:18 PM)

In a story with a Baltimore dateline the local Graham N.C. paper is reporting that a court has ordered the father of slain Marine  Lance Cpl.Matthew Snder(killed in Iraq) to pay Phelps appeal costs. The appeal stems from Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church's protesting at the Marine's 2006 funeral
I certainly hope this is a case of a local paper screwing up the story.....if not I hope the father is prepared to be in contempt of this court order...I know I would certainly not pay.

Opinions?

This is why it is very dangerous to confront the Phelps clan. They include several really good lawyers. Phelps has won many previous court cases.

Mike, is there a link for this story?

Normally in civil tort law, you only pay the other sides legal fees if you lose. In fact, in most States, in order to affect an appeal, you have to put up a Bond or funds equal to the judgment before you do so.

Did the father lose the original case?

Here's the answer to these subhuman scum -

The Patriot Guard Riders is a diverse amalgamation of riders from across the nation. We have one thing in common besides motorcycles. We have an unwavering respect for those who risk their very lives for America’s freedom and security. If you share this respect, please join us.
We don’t care what you ride or if you ride, what your political views are, or whether you’re a hawk or a dove. It is not a requirement that you be a veteran. It doesn't matter where you’re from or what your income is; you don’t even have to ride. The only prerequisite is Respect.
Our main mission is to attend the funeral services of fallen American heroes as invited guests of the family. Each mission we undertake has two basic objectives:

  • Show our sincere respect for our fallen heroes, their families, and their communities.
  • Shield the mourning family and their friends from interruptions created by any protestor or group of protestors. We accomplish the latter through strictly legal and non-violent means.
To those of you who are currently serving and fighting for the freedoms of others, at home and abroad, please know that we are backing you. We honor and support you with every mission we carry out, and we are praying for a safe return home for all.

I joined through their website yesterday, after I heard about this court case. I haven't ridden in years, and I hate the war in Iraq, but they don't care. It's not about supporting the war, it's about supporting the grieving families of people who've given their lives for something the believe in, and defending their right to mourn and bury their loved ones with dignity and respect.

Yeah - The father lost when the Appeal overturned the original judgment which resulted in the father being obligated. Snyder won his case against Westboro in the lower court but that decision was overturned by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit in September.

Losers in such cases often are made to pay legal fees and the appeals court may have just been following that common practice. Still, just because it's what's commonly done, doesn't mean people accept it.
Snyder is getting a lot of support on Facebook.

I don't have 'Facebook' but it that's what it takes to send him some of my $upport - I'm joining.

    Thanks subtee!

Great to hear you are becoming involved Panda. I have been dealing with this particular group for awhile now, and have made some great friends through it.
I had hoped that my mentioning of them a couple years back HERE would have gotten more of a response, but it's never too late to get involved.

    Thank you.

We could kill two birds with one stone here, just let that "Christian" militia loose on them! ("Get their lawyers first!")

I hope Phelps gets skin cancer that spreads to his liver, real soon, but doesnt die for a long, long, long time.

Maybe some military families need to show up when that church has a funeral for a member thereof?

sometimes people need a visual on how stupid they are being...besides that part of the post was a joke any way

popeye1250 -> RE: Father of dead Marine ordered to pay Phelps legal fees (3/30/2010 4:48:34 PM)

In the old days these people would have been committed to state hospitals for being so obviously mentally ill. And that's on the "luckey" side! On the "not luckey side" they would have been killed.
Can't they do something like that "these days?" Mental hospitals I mean.

pahunkboy -> RE: Father of dead Marine ordered to pay Phelps legal fees (3/30/2010 4:49:16 PM)

    the cult is rude.
