Maybe Domiguy is making the point that "Nothing is ever gained from 'broading sweeping statements'" is itself... obviously... a broad sweeping statement.

Personally, I dislike when people intentionally takes jokes too literally, and use that as an excuse for self-righteousness. [:D]

General reply.....

Where you accept that all people are capable of violence and co-operation....and are sometimes reasonable and at other times act out of instinct and habit.......then you need a system that accounts for the best and worst of human nature. And leaving people to their own devices simply doesn't fit. It's the same sort of thinking as the French Revolution....underpinned by the assumption that people are inherently reasonable/fair/freedom loving....which of course is an illusion and was borne out by the 'Terrors'.....there ain't many Mother Theresas running round no matter how virtuous they believe themselves to be.

Where 'people aren't doing anyone any harm there shouldn't be government intervention'.....sounds great on the surface....but it's only part of the story.....the reason why we don't do one another harm is because of the established institutions that guide us and regulate our behaviour. Remove these pillars and you certainly would have people doing one another harm......experience suggests this is the case.

There are people with the personal ethics to regulate themselves...of course there are....but there are a lot of people who would abuse the level of freedom that libertarians wish to see.....and chaos would ensue.
