President calls for end to partisan 'vitriol'

In a TV interview, Obama chides Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck for spreading rancor.

Fri Apr 2, 12:47 pm ET

In an interview with Harry Smith on CBS' "Early Show" Friday morning, President Obama called out Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh as purveyors of "vitriol" - creating a climate in which he's called a "socialist" and even a "Nazi."

Smith asked the president if he was "aware of the level of enmity that crosses the airwaves and that people have made part of their daily conversation about you." Obama replied, "When you've listened to Rush Limbaugh or Glenn Beck it's pretty apparent." The rancor is "troublesome," he said, but he acknowledged it's also a recurring phenomenon.

"Keep in mind that there have been periods in American history where this kind of - this kind of vitriol comes out," he said. "It happens often when you've got an economy that is making people more anxious and people are feeling that there's a lot of change that needs to take place. But that's not the vast majority of Americans."

Walking with Smith on the grounds of the White House, the president said that he is "concerned about a political climate in which the other side is demonized" and that "everybody has a responsibility, Democrats or Republicans, to tone down some of this rhetoric." What's different about today, Obama suggested, is the way overheated rhetoric has moved into the mainstream.

Wow, how un presidential, and whiny.

Obama is a bitch.

It's taken an ugly turn into thinly veiled racism, imho.

Right.  Do you believe he's whining because it's not true, or because he's saying that it's true?  Gingrich's urging to refer to opponents as "sick", etc. and Falwell's tape weren't circulating up on national TV.  I don't remember Rush bloviating quite as hard as he does nowadays, and few things could match Beck's craziness.

Do you really think these guys raise the level of discourse?

Or Beck and Limbaugh are, depending on your perspective.

servantforuse -> RE: Obama says Beck, Limbaugh fuel 'troublesome' political climate (4/2/2010 5:46:18 PM)

It's just like Obama to blame everything going wrong with his administration on Beck and Limbaugh. Cry me a river.

When two people view something from different perspectives, and fail to agree on what they see, I am always inclined to think that neither of them is seeing it whole, for what it is.

Just sayin' ...kinda abstractly, yanno.

I would love to see Obama debate either Glenn Beck or Rush Linbaugh. No teleprompters allowed.

willingtosuck -> RE: Obama says Beck, Limbaugh fuel 'troublesome' political climate (4/2/2010 6:00:17 PM)

If Obama debated anyone no teleprompters allowed there would be one big dark fool that would become the laughing stock of the world.Hell he already is.Beck and Limbaugh would sread him like a tree sreeder in a debnate. Most kindergen classes would do that much sredding of Obama.

Indeed, and the President to his credit did say "everybody has a responsibility, Democrats or Republicans, to tone down some of this rhetoric."

And you make me sick on many levels. I would also suggest trying to spell check your posts prior to submitting them.

servantforuse -> RE: Obama says Beck, Limbaugh fuel 'troublesome' political climate (4/2/2010 6:04:09 PM)

Maybe Obama should be the first to tone it down a little.

Does anyone see things from the same perspective, or as you say, from a whole?

If we did we would all be in agreement.

I'm not pouting at all. I do think it would be interesting though. Rush debating Obama. Obama would never do it. Even he knows his limitations. Rush would have him for lunch..

I think he's whining because he's so egotistical he's not used to anyone questioning his decisions.

We never saw a president criticize any members of the media in the past, but Obama has made a career out of not only taking his little digs at commentators and a network, but having the MSM covering his ass when he calls out a Hannity, or a Limbaugh or rips on Fox News.

That is not exactly true, for some reason I remember Nixon having a war with a particular newpaper, and a couple of their journalists.... It was fairly well publicized as well.

Sanity -> RE: Obama says Beck, Limbaugh fuel 'troublesome' political climate (4/2/2010 6:49:06 PM)

Rush's take on it:

quote:

RUSH: We've got some sound bites here regarding I, El Rushbo, being troublesome, vitriolic.  Here is the Wanda Sykes cut, May 9th, last year, White House Correspondents Dinner.

SYKES:  Rush Limbaugh, one of your (unintelligible). Boy, Rush Limbaugh said he hopes this administration fails. Like, I don't care about people losing their homes or jobs or our soldiers in Iraq, he just wants the country to fail.  To me that's treason.  He's not saying anything differently than what Osama Bin Laden is saying.  You know, you might want to look into this, sir, 'cause I think maybe Rush Limbaugh was the 20th hijacker, but he was just so strung out on OxyContin he missed his flight.  Rush Limbaugh, I hope the country fails.  I hope his kidneys fail, how about that?  Needs a little waterboarding, that's what he needs.

RUSH:  Yeah, that's not troublesome and that's not vitriolic, and, of course, Obama was shown on camera laughing heartily at Wanda Sykes.  Here's Obama back on the CBS morning show today with Harry Smith, and this is his comment about criticism of him.

OBAMA:  It used to be that somebody who said something crazy, they might be saying it to their next-door neighbor or it might be on some late night AM station at the very end of the radio dial.  I am concerned about a political climate in which the other side is demonized. I'm concerned about it when Democrats do it. I'm concerned about it when Republicans do it. I do think there is a tone and tenor that needs to change, where we can disagree without being disagreeable or making wild accusations about the other side. I think that's what most Americans would like to see as well.
