I never said "they started it," Mike. I said they lowered the bar into the gutter. To be more accurate, some lowered the bar into the gutter, and a great many others stood around giving silent assent.

Why are you trying to change the subject? Are you uncomfortable discussing the Dems with regard to the law of unintended consequences?

slvemike4u -> RE: Obama says Beck, Limbaugh fuel 'troublesome' political climate (4/3/2010 12:15:14 AM)

I wasn't aware I was changing the subject.....hell Rich,I wasn't even aware the subject was "Dems with regard to the law of unintended consequences".....I was under the impression the thread was concerned withPresident Obama,Beck and Limbaugh...was I somehow mistaken? [8|]

Credibility and hypocrisy, KD. I've been kicking around here for a while, and extreme rhetoric seemed just fine to the Dems not so very long ago. Hell, Hillary Clinton thought dissent was patriotic!

They only care about it now because it doesn't serve their purposes. I notice that a lot with values the Dems claim to believe in.

And you are right...but does that make what was happening then and now right? Are you the kind that says because they did it I should too?

I don't think you are but I'm not going to try and get you to say it...I've just decided for myself to tone down my satire for awhile and see what happens.

Now if someone gets mad because of my stand on an issue I can’t help that but I will try to control my temper and stick to the issue…or imagine this…shut up.

I think he's whining because he's so egotistical he's not used to anyone questioning his decisions.

We never saw a president criticize any members of the media in the past, but Obama has made a career out of not only taking his little digs at commentators and a network, but having the MSM covering his ass when he calls out a Hannity, or a Limbaugh or rips on Fox News.

Do you live in a box under a bridge somewhere?

White House criticizes NBC News' editing of Bush interview

Bush Criticizes Reports About Bank Tracking - Los Angeles Times

President Bush on Monday criticized newspapers for exposing a secret US government ... the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and other media outlets

WASHINGTON — President Bush on Monday criticized newspapers for exposing a secret U.S. government program that monitors international banking transactions, calling the disclosures a "disgraceful" act that could assist terrorists.

Bush counsel Ed Gillespie, in a letter to NBC, said that "this deceitful editing to further a media-manufactured story line is utterly misleading and irresponsible."

Ed Gillespie is not GWB, and he's not calling out a private citizen, he's calling out an news organization.

Bush ripping the newspapers for divulging national secrets is the same as calling out Rush or Sean in your opinion?

You sir, are a joke.

Right.  Do you believe he's whining because it's not true, or because he's saying that it's true?  Gingrich's urging to refer to opponents as "sick", etc. and Falwell's tape weren't circulating up on national TV.  I don't remember Rush bloviating quite as hard as he does nowadays, and few things could match Beck's craziness.

Do you really think these guys raise the level of discourse?

We've never had a President criticize members of the media before? Really? Shall i present a few examples to prove you wrong?

Again, Nixon was before my time, and you really want to use an opinion overheard by an open mic as Bush calling out a reporter? Pretty weak argument.

LadyEllen -> RE: Obama says Beck, Limbaugh fuel 'troublesome' political climate (4/3/2010 4:06:42 AM)

Wait - Limbaugh and Beck are for realses? Damn, I thought they were offering comedy inspired by Monty Python and the great tradition of stand up.

I shall have to edit the Journal Of American Joke Crackers I've been working on.

In your Bush example it he wasn't "calling out" the media, it was meant to be a private comment that was unknowingly caught by a hot microphone.

Who can forget this sort of thing - was it really that long ago?

quote:

Promoting his movie Fahrenheit 9/11 at the Democratic National Convention, radical filmmaker Michael Moore launched into a shouting, red-faced denunciation of Republicans Tuesday, saying supporters of the GOP are different from "real Americans"; that they are "people who hate"; that they are "up at six in the morning trying to figure out which minority group they're going to screw today"; and that in the upcoming presidential campaign, they "are going to fight...smear...lie...and hate."

Moore, who sat in former President Jimmy Carter's box at the convention Monday night, has been welcomed by wildly enthusiastic audiences at his appearances in Boston. He made his remarks about Republicans during one of those appearances, at a forum sponsored by the left-wing organizing group Campaign for America's Future. The speech drew an overflow crowd; fans stood in line for hours for a chance to hear Moore speak.

I would love to see Obama debate either Glenn Beck or Rush Linbaugh. No teleprompters allowed.

This whole teleprompter thing is another ridiculous distraction.

It is indeed a distraction, but pretty accurate. One might even suggest it is why he avoids the pressers at the White House, there is no script, and an oddball question might just start another incident requiring a beer summit. For the record I think the President would do fairly well in an organized debate against either of the talking heads.

I agree with Thadius.  The president was a lawyer before he was a senator.  He argued for a living (and I would venture to say without teleprompters).

The Dems forfeited any right to complain about civil discourse. They set the fucking bar where it is, they can live in their own filth. Bed - make - lay.

It's that whole "unanticipated consequences" thing the Democrats just can't ever seem to learn about. That worries me greatly when they do things like go fucking with our health insurance.

Talk about spin. What does one have to do with the other?

Are you under the impression everything was rosy until just recently?

More silly spin. No one is panning dissent per se.

And dissent with the dissent is always perfectly acceptable.

If you want to make this partisan and "who started what," consider the decades of outright lies Republicans have used to win elections.

Start with the Muskie letter.

The bar's been low for a while.

subrob, I believe Clinton, did, in fact, diss Rush a few times. When the Republicans came back into power, Rush slid in his ratings pretty badly, because he no longer had anyone to snark at. Now that the Democrats are back, Rush is in his happy place once again.
Obama didn't whine, or do anything shrill. He said, rather thoughtfully, that the rhetoric needs to be scaled back. He is quite right. The hysteria in the media, the popular press like Back and Limbaugh, and the rest are creating a very bad precident and making Americans seem weak and foolish. I, for one, am pretty sick of it.

Exactly.

Are you actually suggesting these are comparable, RML???

You had a perfectly legitimate dumb comment to go after and THIS is the example you choose?

Yes, because THIS is the same.

Free speech does not end when the government decides.

Bush had every right to criticize it, as the media had every right to report it.
