vacation ideas - 4/8/2010 4:44:45 PM

Status: offline 		My significant other and I have never been on vacations so we have no idea where to start looking to find where we would want to go.  We have a first year anniversary coming up and we wanted to go somewhere for a couple days.  Just away from work, school, home, Vegas.  Does anybody have any suggestions? 

I know most of you reading this are most likely thinking "you are in Vegas, why not just tour Vegas?"  Well, Vegas gets old, especially fast if you live and work here, see it everyday.

Status: offline 		San Antonio, TX.  The Riverwalk is uber-romantic for walking around hand-in-hand, as are the canal boats.  And the Alamo doesn't suck, either.  Great food.  Perfect place to spend a long weekend!

They are awesome.

Of course, I am not sure if you all want camping suggestions or tourist attractions or just getting away from people suggestions. 

Do you two know what kinds of things that you would like to do?  Recreation wise?

Status: offline 		I convinced a girl I was dating last year it would be fun to drive down to Roswell, New Mexico.  Because of the UFO stuff.  It was awesome!  We broke up shortly after that.  Probably a coincidence.

If you want to stay in the southwest, I'd second San Antonio. 

Virginia is for lovers. It's gorgeous, fairly peaceful, and there's both nature and culture. Also, the Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond has the largest collection of Faberge eggs outside Russia.

The best vacay with a significant other was to South Beach.  We stayed in an uber-rad art deco hotel and spent several charming days drinking strong, candy colored drinks with umbrellas in them and luxuriating in the madness.  Added bonus:  It was a chance for us, as Americans, to watch affluent European tourists get hammered and make asses of themselves, rather than the other way around.  If every Frenchman spent a week in South Beach and every American spent a week in the right parts of Paris, we'd understand each other better.  Or be too ashamed to look each other in the eyes, which is roughly where we stand now.

Edit:

I just saw your post above that you definitely want to stay in the general area.  If San Antonio is feasible, I'd still second it.  Also Carlsbad Caverns was a good suggestion

Status: offline 		Niagara Falls is breathtaking, if you've never been there.  The "touristy" part is kind of cheesy, which you can make fun, actually.   But the falls themselves are just awesome. 

Carnival and Royal Caribbean (and probably other cruise lines) have 3 & 4 night cruises, and sometimes you can get a weekend "cruise to nowhere" where they are either repositioning a ship or just taking it for a test drive for really good prices.

Just posting things as they pop into my head. :)

Status: offline 		If you go to Niagara, avoid the hotels by the falls and stay at Niagara-On-The-Lake to the north. Awesome place for couples, great scenery & wineries, and it's like a 15 min drive to the touristy areas. Best of all worlds.

Status: offline 		San Francisco has so much to see and do. If you like museums, walking in parks, sightseeing & shopping.

If you like nature the Bryce and Zion parks in Utah are great to see.

Sedona Arizona is a wonderful place to go and take walks and see Indian Pueblos, great dining, beautiful red rocks, shopping, galleries.

I have been to Vegas and frankly the only thing I want to see are the shows. Now Vegas is great if you love to do what the other people do..gamble...

i agree. Living in Austin, i just don't see the appeal San Antonio holds for people. Sure, the Riverwalk is nice, but it's loaded with chain restaurants and mall stores now - no local charm at all. And the one bit of San Antonio that's downtown and pretty is very small - the rest of the city is pretty bleak, in my opinion. Also i have yet to stay in a hotel on the Riverwalk that wasn't in need of some level of refurbishment and repair - most places are just so-so. And the Alamo is much smaller than you think, and most folks leave just kind of, eh.

Go to Amelia Island off the coast of FL for a few days - you'll be glad you did. Or else Napa (Chanric Inn - owned by some friends of mine), or SanFran, upstate NY, Boston, or anywhere in the mountains of Western VA for a great place to go. Just beautiful.

Also, TripAdvisor is your friend, if you don't know about it already: www.tripadvisor.com. No matter where you go, you will find reviews posted by people of all the places to stay - and there are LOTS of them. i have found some really awesome B&B's and Inns to stay in (and not necessarily the most expensive) off of this site.

Status: offline 		Wow, you guys are tough!  I didn't really notice the chain stores much because I was entranced by the beautiful old architecture and landscaping, the bridges, the gardens, the waterfalls, the fountains, the trees, the mission bells.....the photo ops there are amazing.  Just sayin'.

As far as the Alamo....yeah, it was small, but that's the way they built them back then.  I loved the old architecture and gardens there, too.  And, I felt such an overwhelming sadness and melancholy there......apparently shared by the many others who were in there with me, since the only things keeping you from hearing a pin drop were the reverent voices of the tour guides.  To me, part of the charm WAS the surprise that, amidst the hustle and bustle of a large city still stood (yes, restored) this tiny little Spanish mission where such a horrific and bloody battle took place. 

I guess that man-made ditch filled with water in Panama was pretty useless, too    .

My thinking is to stay sort of close to home-- go easy on the budget- but GOOOOOOOOO.

The Panama ditch is pretty awesome! It was amazing to think the commerce of the world lined up to pass through what used to connect two continents.

And I agree that San Antonio was pretty cool. I was in lust at the time and all the world was fine!
