TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. – Democratic Rep. Bart Stupak, targeted for defeat by Tea Party activists for his crucial role in securing House approval of the health care overhaul, said Friday he would retire from Congress this year. The nine-term congressman told The Associated Press he could have won re-election and insisted he wasn't being chased from the race by the Tea Party Express, which is holding rallies this week in his northern Michigan district calling for his ouster. Instead, Stupak said he was tired after 18 years in office and wanted to spend more time with his family. "The Tea Party did not run me out," he said in a telephone interview. "If you know me and my personality, I would welcome the challenge."

Interesting timing to say the least, I'm just gonna sit back and wait for "the rest of the story".

A whole lot of family time is coming up for a whole lot of Democrats.

Its truly a heart warming story.

LOL, well the republicans got their time off, now its democrats turn, I am glad there is bi-partisan cooperation here.

slutslave4u -> RE: Tea Party target Stupak won't seek re-election (4/9/2010 7:39:26 AM)

Would there be any doubt that he would have lost re-election had he attempted so? I think he understood and knew after his last vote he was on his way out with no chance for re-election.

I'm wondering what his retirement from politics will consist of...

It seems rather possible he seen this coming when he sold his vote for an Executive Order and whatever else. It seems we may soon learn what his price was.

Morning Bull,

Yeah the timing is rather suspect, perhaps it has something to do with the other big news this morning, Justice Stevens is going to retire. Probably not, but I don't doubt anything being possible in politics in recent years.

You guys crack me up.

We heard the same predictions when McCain made the Republican savior his running mate.

Actually he claims that he would have won if he chose to run again.

This is not news. Stevens said months ago that he will retire within the next few years, and that he will do it doing Obama's term.

Maybe new to the TV crowd. I don't know.

Didn't that bitch from Alaska step down from her gig to spend more time with her family?

teabaggers are such a joke...it will be fun to pull these threads out in a short time to get some explanations from their supporters.

Would that make Stupak a self-proclaimed Straw-Man....

Maybe new to the TV crowd. I don't know.

He announced in a letter an exact date this morning, well that is when I caught it. The first day after the court stands for recess this summer.

quote:

NY Times Article this morning
WASHINGTON — Associate Justice John Paul Stevens, leader of the liberal wing of the Supreme Court, announced on Friday that he would retire at the end of this term, setting up a confirmation battle over his replacement that is virtually certain to dominate the political scene this summer.

In a brief letter to President Obama, whom he addressed as “my dear Mr. President,” Justice Stevens said he was announcing his retirement now because he had “concluded that it would be in the best interests of the Court to have my successor appointed and confirmed well in advance of the commencement of the Court’s next term” in October.

I don't get why they think they're a movement.

A bunch of mainly Republican voters will vote for a bunch of Republican candidates.

Where's the change in that? If anything, they'll just tip the Republican party even further to the right, alienating even more independents.

slvemike4u -> RE: Tea Party target Stupak won't seek re-election (4/9/2010 10:55:08 AM)

Please Domi, the same guys who made such erroneous predictions prior to the Presidential elections are right back here making their new Nov.mid term picks....and guess who their picking.[:D]
The more things change ,the more they stay the same. [8|]

Thadius -> RE: Tea Party target Stupak won't seek re-election (4/9/2010 10:56:50 AM)

Not sure about that. Word from friends in that live in his district (just north of me) is that most folks there lost any faith they had in the man and his principles.

Ah, OK. I haven't heard any news yet today.

The speculation was that he would wait until after the election. A SC confirmation hearing now would just be messy.

That is what she stated, and we see what the real reason for it was... Making big money with a book tour and speaking engagements. I have no problem with folks making all of the money they can, I have an issue with them jumping ship to do so. Which she has done, and I wouldn't be surprised to find out that Stupak winds up doing (at least he is finishing his term).

Why does Stevens' retirement have any impact on this?

He is considered a moderate liberal on the bench and likely will be replaced by the same.

Thadius -> RE: Tea Party target Stupak won't seek re-election (4/9/2010 11:03:08 AM)

I agree such a move is risky at best, however it may allow for a bit of political cover by changing the focus during the election cycle. Who knows how this will play out.

Obama is speaking on the announcement as I type this.

It was just a bit of wild speculation on my part, there could be some other post in his future. Oh and isn't Rep. Stupak considered a moderate liberal?
