Status: offline 		Would there be any doubt that he would have lost re-election had he attempted so? I think he understood and knew after his last vote he was on his way out with no chance for re-election.

I'm wondering what his retirement from politics will consist of...

It seems rather possible he seen this coming when he sold his vote for an Executive Order and whatever else. It seems we may soon learn what his price was.

Yeah the timing is rather suspect, perhaps it has something to do with the other big news this morning, Justice Stevens is going to retire. Probably not, but I don't doubt anything being possible in politics in recent years.

This is not news. Stevens said months ago that he will retire within the next few years, and that he will do it doing Obama's term.

Maybe new to the TV crowd. I don't know.

He announced in a letter an exact date this morning, well that is when I caught it. The first day after the court stands for recess this summer.

A bunch of mainly Republican voters will vote for a bunch of Republican candidates.

Where's the change in that? If anything, they'll just tip the Republican party even further to the right, alienating even more independents.

Ah, OK. I haven't heard any news yet today.

The speculation was that he would wait until after the election. A SC confirmation hearing now would just be messy.

That is what she stated, and we see what the real reason for it was... Making big money with a book tour and speaking engagements. I have no problem with folks making all of the money they can, I have an issue with them jumping ship to do so. Which she has done, and I wouldn't be surprised to find out that Stupak winds up doing (at least he is finishing his term).

Why does Stevens' retirement have any impact on this?

He is considered a moderate liberal on the bench and likely will be replaced by the same.

Status: offline 		I agree such a move is risky at best, however it may allow for a bit of political cover by changing the focus during the election cycle. Who knows how this will play out.

Obama is speaking on the announcement as I type this.

It was just a bit of wild speculation on my part, there could be some other post in his future. Oh and isn't Rep. Stupak considered a moderate liberal?
