A major study tracking the eating habits of 478,000 Europeans suggests that consuming lots of fruits and vegetables has little if any effect on preventing cancer.

The study, published in the current issue of The Journal of the National Cancer Institute, is the latest in a series of studies to debunk the potential of vegetables for lowering cancer risk, but the results don’t mean you should push those greens off your plate.

A number of studies show that high vegetable consumption is associated with lower risk for cardiovascular disease. In addition, there is still some evidence that certain vegetables contain potent, cancer-fighting compounds. And the latest study also suggested a potentially higher anticancer benefit of eating vegetables for people who regularly drink alcohol.

LOL

I eat a fair amount of veggies, but they have to be immersed in butter or cheese.

Jeff, I would make you the meanest bowl of red skinned mashed potatoes if we were friends...you would wag your anteater tail and get heart eyes

I love my veggies....eating a spinach salad every day does wonders for me...i rarely ever get more than a whisper of a cold. I'm strong like pop-eye! maybe them europeans need to eat organic?
although... i was eating an organic apple today and took a bite with a dead worm inside of it. I hacked and spit into my cubicle garbage can saying "what the fuck!?" loud enough in an office enviroment...eating a worm in an apple really puts a damper on your trust issues when it comes to organic apples... dead worms or cancer????hmmmmmmm

The American Institute for Cancer Research in reference to the study states...
quote:

Three Key Points

1. The Cancer Protection is Small, But It’s There
If even the modest strength of the protection observed in this study holds true in the US population, the potential benefits remain impressive: If everyone ate just 2 more portions of fruits and vegetables every day, we’d experience 2.5% fewer cancers – that’s about 37,000 US cases every year.
The study’s authors took pains to point out that the observed protective effect, though small, is real: “Our study supports the notion of a modest cancer preventive effect of high intake of fruits and vegetables and we can exclude chance as a likely factor.”

2. Not All Cancers Are Alike

The AICR/WCRF expert report found probable evidence linking fruits and vegetable consumption to cancers of the mouth, pharynx and larynx, stomach, esophagus and lung (fruits only). The strength of protection that diets high in fruits and vegetables provide against these cancers is likely much higher than 2.5%.

3. Fruits and Vegetables Belong at the Center of the Plate

People who eat plenty of fruits and vegetables are less likely to become overweight. Scientists now say that, after not smoking, maintaining a healthy weight is the most important thing you can do for cancer prevention.

Not really a "get out of eating your fruits & veggies" card.

The summary of the study, http://jnci.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/content/full/djq098#BIB5 , also states...

quote:

In summary, the findings from the EPIC cohort add further evidence that a broad effort to increase consumption of fruits and vegetables will not have a major effect on cancer incidence. Such efforts are still worthwhile because they will reduce risks of cardiovascular disease, and a small benefit for cancer remains possible. Research should focus more sharply on specific fruits and vegetables and their constituents and on earlier periods of life. For prevention of cancer, the primary focus at present should be heightened efforts to reduce smoking and obesity because obesity in the United States has become similar in magnitude to smoking as an avoidable cause.

So....eat you fruits and veggies, they're still good for you.

An unproven hypothesis that may very well fall by the wayside, along with "fat is bad". There are so many anti-nutrients in vegetables, and nuts also, that keep the body from absorbing much of whatever benefit they may offer, I doubt that they're the miracle foods some make them out to be.

Eat your meat, and leave off the pudding!

To the authors of this flawed study, FUCK YOU!

Why not line a tube in with HFCS/MSG/GMO?

This is bad data.

Hunky, how dare thee ? You have addressed the point AND at the same time refused to accept data ! There is hope for you yet.

There is a university out there somewhere that apparently cured arthritis, ask and I'll tell you what they did, But I won't guarantee that it will work. It was ONE study in ONE geographical area. Their method actually seems quite sound, but will it work for everyone ?

So in the OP they say veggies don't do the trick. Well veggies that are commercially grown do not have the nutrients that they should, so it's no surprise. What's more I don't believe anything anymore and I'll pose this :

Vitamin C is important, vitamin D is important. Explain the Eskimos. They don't have many citrus groves up in Alaska or whatever, and they don't get all that much sun. If fruits and veggies are so important, explain the existence of those people.

If salt is so bad for you, how come they give you a saline solution in case, for example you get shot or something ?

I also view any nutritional study with a jaundiced eye because of several factors. Mainly because I believe that people of different ethnicity/heritage whatever have different nutritional needs. Although we all need the same nutrients of course, we need them in differing quantities. If someone wants to tell me what to eat, their data better come from a selected test group with a similar lineage to mine. Don't tell me what the Orientals need or whoever, tell me what Eastern Europeans need (I think, Polak, German and Slovak).

But things are not done that way as it would be politically incorrect. What's more, even in a multicultural study, if they would report by ethinicity it might help. If they did so we might have some real data, such as "Blacks showed a moderate improvement while Whites and Orientals seemed to show no positive benfits from the program". Things like that. But NOOOOOO they can't do that. C'mon people, this is not racism this is your life ! Your well being, your health !

In another thread someone said "We are focussed on our differences rather than..." I agree, and in the cultural sense it might be better left alone, but to assume everyone has the same body chemistry is ludicrous at best. Criminal at worst. How much good data has been flushed down the toilet ?

BTW if anyone wants to try the cure for arthritis you'll need a vacuum pump. The approach makes sense, but I can't guanrantee it'll work for everyone. Details on request.

As far as diet and cancer (I will not restart a debate on the meaning of that) your best bet is to get on the phone and say you need some lab rat feed. They are the best fed beings on the planet. It may sound gross, but if you knew what was in those pills you would be equally as shocked. In fact if most people knew what was in hotdogs they would puke. However further discovery and reflection on my part has resulted in the conclusion that hot dogs (and bologna of course) are one of the most nutritious foods you can eat, especially on a tight budget. Mt theory on that on request also, I will not bore the uninterested with it.

So the bottom line here is that veggies used to be good for you but now they are not. Don't worry about it, within a week they'll most likely contradict themselves again and we can have our carrots and peas. BTW, I have to go to the grocery later, which is it this week butter or margarine ?

Always butter!!  Margarine is hydrogenated and that means transfat.  Butter has saturated fat, but no transfat.

Hunky, unless you have a background in research you don't have a valid reason to claim this. I'm guessing you don't so what you are saying isn't even vaguely believable.

Sorry Hunky what does that mean? Unless I'm mistaken you don't know the first thing about analysing research data so your post was and is meaningless.
