'the state' depending on context holds a particulare meaning in that context.

So, for example you are in 'the state' of confusion all the time.

That is AN answer, not THEE answer.

If you want a definition of 'the state' you can google as well as the next guy, and if you claim that there is one and only one answer to the question, you are a cretin.

If you want the definition, first define very carefully the context, and I will provide you one.
