Yup, it's not good here at all. All airports are grounded except a few in Scotland and Ireland which are taking non commercial and emergancy type flights. Ports and Eurostar are fully booked with backlogs - they haven't even offered us alternatives now because we aren't classed as an emergancy like others either trying to get back home or need to travel for business. It's not a disaster, because we can go another time, but it's still disappointing and been booked for ages (as you know) and was booked inbetween both our birthdays. the.dark.

No one should worry. President Obama, working with the EPA and the global warming cabral...er....science community... is preparing emergency legislation with the Congress. The President warned that if the volcanoes do not comply, President Obama will nationalize them. Speaking for the Republicans, former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin hailed the President's plan for bringing in immigrants to deal with the issue. Dark, I am truly sorry to hear you have been affected by this natural disaster, but it does cheer me that the powers that be have taken this precaution of grounding aircraft, it could not have been a light decision based upon the mess it would cause, but I feel they did the right thing, those engines act like massive vacuum cleaners to do their stuff. As to your comment above about the cock posturing of some, I agree, and moreso, I have noticed on this website there seems to be more and more of it, everything, no matter what the subject is about, seems to attract those that will argue the minutae of politics.To me, it comes across in their vitriolic ramblings they are very unhappy people who come here to vent and pick fights with others so they can feel some control and mastery in their lives. A most unusual evening this evening, the moon as it was reminded me of the middle eastern desert, the sickle and it's colour from the dust in the air. Cars had a thin film of sandy looking dust on them which when a finger run across, came up black, much of what was described as the stuff found in the Shetlands this morning.This evening, I felt as if sand was in my eyes, they felt gritty and annoyed and I was sneezing on the way to the pub, too early for hayfever, If I still get it anymore. Tonight we saw a meteorite streak across the sky, but moving far slower than any before and with it, it was large and glowing a bright green, maybe the ash in the atmosphere had slowed it some and permitted it to burn what stuck as it fell out to sea. Interesting times as far as natural phenomena goes.

Most meteorites burn up at altitudes higher than 30 or 40 miles, and the ash is nowhere near that high. My guess is that you saw an unusually large meteorite, which took longer to burn up and thereby gave the illusion of moving more slowly. That would also account for the unusual brightness. They said on the news that flights will be cancelled for another day. Thousands of flights per day are being affected. Watch oil prices take a dive again as jet fuel backs up in the system.

Well us "bloody vikings" would have happily paid whatever we legally owe from the Icesave disaster had the UK and Dutch governments not tried to up the pricetag of about 80% and used borderline ethical measures to push us into accepting a contract with ridiculous interest they all know we cannot possibly pay and do not have to pay according to EU laws. If your government hadn't wasted all this time and credibility bullying us into accepting illegal contracts you'd have all your money back from us by now, which we are quite frankly happy to pay. And it it thanks to our victory in the Cod wars you still can have some cod on your plate because the lack of proper regulation of fisheries by the british through the decades has left most of your seas empty.

Well, I just found out that my mother and sister will not be able to fly back any sooner than thursday (they were supposed to come home tommorow) at the earliest. Now I'm hearing reports about a second volcano? Cripes! They may end up having to live in Amsterdam! The thing that really sucks is that if anyone in my family deserves to be stuck in Amsterdam - it's me!

I do know that a friend of mine on the East Coast has contacted the British Embassy and offered to take in a few stranded travelers if need be. Agreed on the Icesave catastrophe. On the fish stocks though, I think you'll find the Spanish vacuum cleaner trawlers are responsible for our sparkling, fish free waters, courtesy of the flawed EU fisheries policy. When you join, if they let you that is, you'll get the same benefit. Setting off volcanoes however is just bad sportsmanship. I know the Icelandic government is responsible for this as a deliberate act - my favourite conspiracy website has all the evidence to prove it. E

Now see, if it was me, I'd take a boat across the Channel and start looking up the British Wing of Collarme to see if I could find a pad to crash... uhm, or is that crib to flop in Brit, I'm not really sure how far behind the times I am in current Brit slang. [:D] The website idea is pretty good. It has a nice people driven feel to it that appeals to my Libertairian instincts. Truth is, situations like this bring out both the best and worst in people and the media usually tends to focus on the worst but in any natural disaster there are always shinning examples of people simply reaching out to people in need (remember the Canadian town that got all the airplane people dumped on them during 9-11?). I have faith that that will be the case here. At this point I still remained concerned but not overly worried about my mother and sister. Like I said, they are both smart women (even if their idea of fun in Amsterdam is not the same as my idea of fun in Amsterdam [:)]) who know how to take care of themselves.

The ferries are fully booked Marc, as is the Eurotunnel. Though most people are fixated on the crossings to and from Kent and it might be less busy on a route like Hook of Holland to Harwich ("Harritch"), operated by Stena Lines if you want to look it up. E
