The ferries are fully booked Marc, as is the Eurotunnel. Though most people are fixated on the crossings to and from Kent and it might be less busy on a route like Hook of Holland to Harwich ("Harritch"), operated by Stena Lines if you want to look it up.

Sounds to me like we need another Dunkirk boat lift. Do you have or know anybody with a boat? C'mon, pick me up and let me crash at your pad! I'm a real easy house guest. I promise I won't raid the liquor cabinet but any chocolate or peanut butter is fair game.

You'd be welcome Marc - if you can find anywhere to sleep that the cats havent taken (thats why I'm still on here at 2am)

Eh, my father taught me many things by example growing up and one of them was: if there is a dispute bewtween you and a cat over who is going to use a chair the human wins every time because we're big enough to pick them up and toss them aside and they're not [:)].

It is good to know, though, that I got at least one place to go if I ever get stranded in the Mother Country. [:)]

I think I heard there is another Volcano nearby that could go off at any time..I wasn't totally listening..

I think this recent one went off before in the 1800's. There was something about one of these went off for 2 years!

I hope this isn't the case...It is bad enough people are stuck and cannot get home...

RCdc -> RE: Iceland Volcano and the Grounding of European Flights (4/18/2010 12:04:57 PM)

On the whole Harwich thing, don't put too much hope on it being better.  It's suffering the same (our local news has had updates) with queues and bookings.  My friend also spent the week on the Isle of Wight and came home yesterday - the shipping lanes are so full, even they were delayed and didn't get back until one this morning after over a 10 hour delay.

Perhaps in time gone by that may have happened in the first instance, giving shelter to travellers, but times have changed, now everyone looks to government to sort things out before we are forced to act ourselves.

But hey, who knows, the human spirit might yet still be alive, help may happen and with it the boost to humanity on hearing about charity given in these difficult times.

I wonders often though, the centralisation of all things, is it our undoing.

The general tendency in modern times, at least as I have noticed, is that government provides the fremework for relief efforts but private citizens step up and fill in the gaps. Just one minor example - government, in the form of emergency services, responded to the 9-11 attacks but private citizens brought in the bottled water and food that the service personal and victims needed. The same kind of thing can be seen in this situation. Government makes the necessary decision to ground flights and private citizens help stranded travelers.

Don't get me started on the inherent problems that comes with the centralization of power. I am a firm believer that this tendency of the human race to seek centralized power as a "solution" to societal "problems" is a major cause of many of our real problems ("if we can just get the right people at the top we can force everyone to behave properly!"). I am a firm believer in the decentraliztion of power as the route to a better (if not perfect - we can never achieve perfect) society. Of course, this requires people to have a "live and let live" attitude, something which far too many egos simply cannot abide - there are just too many people out there living their lives the "wrong" way, don't ya know.

Just an update, it has just been revealed on the daytime news that the Royal Navy are going to undisclosed ports to pick up stuck travellers. HMS Albion is on route to Santander to pick up stranded soldiers coming back from Afghanistan.

FullCircle -> RE: Iceland Volcano and the Grounding of European Flights (4/19/2010 10:37:33 AM)

I've been looking up in the sky and I can't see any of this ash they speak of.

Last I heard the Royal Navy were going to France, ferries not affected by volcanic ash I suspect, the Eurostar too that Chunnel is clogged full of the volcanic ash don't know how it got there though.

We've just got used to dealing with snow and now they throw volcanic ash at us, we can't fix this with salt.

Aneirin -> RE: Iceland Volcano and the Grounding of European Flights (4/19/2010 11:25:41 AM)

I am not sure I should say this given the decent weather we are having, but I suppose a good down pour of rain should clear the air a bit. As for aviation, I heard earlier, some berk flew an F16 through the ash and the result was a damaged engine, fair enough a fighter pilot can eject if his engine fails, but they don't even put parachutes on airliners anymore, so civvies are screwed if the engines fail.

No one should worry. President Obama, working with the EPA and the global warming cabral...er....science community... is preparing emergency legislation with the Congress.

While I realize you're joking, this has nothing to do with global warming, as volcanic ash is not carbon, and doesn't stay in the atmosphere long term, but rather blows along with the wind:

"Small jagged pieces of rocks, minerals, and volcanic glass the size of sand and silt (less than 2 millimeters (1/12 inch) in diameter) erupted by a volcano are called volcanic ash. Very small ash particles can be less than 0.001 millimeters (1/25,000th of an inch) across. Volcanic ash is not the product of combustion, like the soft fluffy material created by burning wood, leaves, or paper. Volcanic ash is hard, does not dissolve in water, is extremely abrasive and mildly corrosive, and conducts electricity when wet.

"Volcanic ash is formed during explosive volcanic eruptions. Explosive eruptions occur when gases dissolved in molten rock (magma) expand and escape violently into the air, and also when water is heated by magma and abruptly flashes into steam. The force of the escaping gas violently shatters solid rocks. Expanding gas also shreds magma and blasts it into the air, where it solidifies into fragments of volcanic rock and glass. Once in the air, wind can blow the the tiny ash particles tens to thousands of kilometers away from the volcano."

http://volcanoes.usgs.gov/ash/properties.html

Fragments of rock and glass aren't greenhouse gases. And these aren't even carbon--they're silicates.

Eventually, they fall back to earth.

This is the problem with the world, people have no sense of adventure. Worst that can happen is that you'll crash land, get stick on an island with mysterious magnetic properties, killer black smoke and polar bears.

Another moron, who is either joking inappropriately, or doesnt believe aircraft crash and people die.

You've Lost me, Jacob.

Marc2b -> RE: Iceland Volcano and the Grounding of European Flights (4/19/2010 9:05:14 PM)

Well I've gotten word that my mother and sister are supposedly (I'm told that it is not one hundred percent gauranteed) coming home tommorow. They have to have a layover in Atlanta - sounds like they have to fly south of the ash (just speculation on my part) - before flying into Buffalo. The bad news is I have to go pick them up around 12:30 am. The good news is that I won't have to miss Lost to do so!

Anti-Jacob rules!

(just kidding, I'm rooting for the good guys... I think... with that show you can never be certain).

London, England (CNN) -- The eruption of an Icelandic volcano, which had slowed in recent days, strengthened Monday, spewing a new cloud of ash that officials said was heading toward the United Kingdom, possibly posing a renewed threat to air travel. "This demonstrates the dynamic and rapidly changing conditions in which we are working," the United Kingdom's National Air Traffic Service said in a written statement. "Latest information ... shows that the situation is worsening in some areas. Based on this information, the situation for Northern Irish airports for the morning is uncertain, due to the new ash cloud."

Aneirin -> RE: Iceland Volcano and the Grounding of European Flights (4/20/2010 2:09:14 PM)

It has just been released on the TV news, that the restrictions have been lifted, the planes are flying again. It seems the aircraft manufacturers and airlines have complained to the  UK government that a complete no fly situation, is over the top, the government have now backed down.

Marc2b -> RE: Iceland Volcano and the Grounding of European Flights (4/20/2010 5:32:29 PM)

I have just been informed by the tour group that my mother and sister have landed in Houstan. They have to take a connecting flight to Atlanta and from there to Buffalo which means I have to bee at the airport at midnight (just enough time to watch Lost and then go [:)]). It will be good to have them home. I love them both so dearly and have missed them so much. [sm=hearts.gif]

I hope they remembered to bring me the things I requested (pot, prostitute, absinthe, chocolate and an original Vermeer).

Yay! Glad to hear of the safe return of your mother and sister! What a relief that is!
