One of the interns at work grew up in a posh part of Los Angeles and was amused by how overawed people who aren't jaded L.A. kids tend to be when they meet someone famous.  A couple of people had horror stories about seeing movie stars in airports or hotels and being either ignored or blown off when they asked for autographs.  I think I was the only person with any pleasant celebrity encounters (though part of that has to do with my definition of "celebrity").  For example:

Steve Malkmus once kicked my ass at pinball.

We were eating in the same restaurant as Bret Easton Ellis.  He listened indulgently as I gushed for 30 seconds, and laughed when I told him he was "much tanner and thinner than I'd expected."  He signed my menu, which is still hanging on my bedroom wall.

I saw David Foster Wallace in a bookstore.  We spoke for a couple of minutes, and then I looked around frantically for a copy of any of his books he could sign.  Luckily they had a 1st of Infinite Jest (which was only about 50 bucks back then) so I hurried like hell to buy it and get him to sign it before he took off.  We had about a five minute conversation about Parmenides.  I was so excited I ran home and called my girlfriend to tell her (this was before cell phones).

The two coolest by far, though:

When I was a kid (12, maybe 13) we were eating in a restaurant out in the burbs and my father realized the old black dude at the table next to us was almost definitely Ernie Banks.  He went over and talked to him for a couple of minutes and then motioned me over.  I was in heaven.  I was also a baseball nerd, so I kept quoting Ernie's statistics at him.  Sometimes he seemed genuinely surprised by just how good he'd really been ("That many homers in 57?  Well I'll be...") and he was clearly very amused by how much awe he could still inspire in a kid who was born years after he retired.  One of the nicest guys I've ever met.  Signed my napkin.

Several years before that, we saw a bunch of WWF guys eating in a truckstop along the I-57.  They were on their way to Chicago.  We walked in to use the bathroom on a road trip and I happened to glance into the greasy spoon and saw a table full of the largest human beings I'd ever seen in my life.  One loomed particularly large.  My eyes widened and I yelled "DAD ANDRE THE GIANT IS EATING IN THERE!@"

I ran up to the table before my dad even had a chance to grab me, and just stood, about three feet away, and stared in wide wonder as he crammed buffalo wings into his mouth with two hands.  I don't think he was trying to eat the bones, but I'm not sure he would have noticed if he had.  He must have been accustomed to drawing stares, because he continued to munch complacently as I stood and watched.  My jaw had literally dropped and a couple of the other guys at the table (the only ones I recognized were Andre and a jobber named Barry Horrowitz) were laughing and nudging Andre.  As soon as he swallowed the handful of fries he'd crammed in his mouth, he grinned at me.  I was a huge wrestling fan, so I knew he spoke French, and I knew how to say four or five things, including my name (we were going on vacation that summer), so I stuck out my hand and said "Je m'appelle [my name goes here]."  That seemed to delight him, because instead of shaking my hand he patted my head.  It should be noted that his hand was so enormous and so strong that it felt like a tree falling (as gently as a tree could possibly fall) on my head over and over.  I ended up happy and pretty dizzy.  Didn't have anything for him to sign but that was okay--meeting my biggest hero in the world with my father standing amused behind me was one of the coolest moments of my life.

So has anyone else had fun celebrity encounters?  Or, they don't have to be fun to be good stories.  Steve Stone was a dick to me once, and Antonio Alfonseca almost ran us down speeding down a Chicago street in that fucking yellow Hummer he used to drive around after blowing yet another save.

I don't but my daughter met her favorite singing group when she was 11. We were on our way home for a "Blockbuster Night" when she heard on the radio the group was due to fly in to a local airport about 25 miles away for a concert. She literally got on her knees in the car begging me to take her. (Luckily we were at a stop light) Of course I took her & her best friend. The group was then known as "Immature". Romeo, Batman & LDB aka Little Drummer Boy.
I knew we would get separated in the mad rush of screaming girls so I arranged for them to meet me back at the car. The girl's chased them all the way from the gate to the shuttle & then I lost them. When we met up at the car the girl's told me that my daughter got on the shuttle but her friend was stopped. One of the group member's & the manager said to let the girl on & they got to sit knees to knees w/these guys.
When the shuttle arrived at their stop, of course they were chased to their waiting vehicle where one of the members lost his visor thus a tug of war ensued bet my daughter & a security guard for the visor. The guard won
Lol, needless to say the girl's were in 7th Heaven!

When I was celebrating my 21st b'day at a hotel bar/disco w/friends, we saw the group Journey complete w/Steve Perry a few tables away. They seemed to be enjoying themselves & acting decent w/the fans. I wasn't one of them so I didn't approach their tables but my friends did. One friend damn near bumped into Steve Perry on the way in. I thought she was going to fall off the ramp in shock!

My mother worked out at the same gym that Jimmie Walker did & said he was a real snob. Very full of himself. Yes, that was during his JJ era.

Aunt Fab tells the story about when she and her best friend were in a casino restaurant and Cher came in. Aunt Fab's friend had crazy wild, Cher-esque hair. And somehow they ended up talking to her. (I believe there were some cocktails in this story, but I wouldn't want to tell tales out of school). Anyway it ended somehow with the friend admitting she gets mistaken for Cher all the time, and then turning to Cher and asking, "Do you get mistaken for me too?"

Even Aunt Fab's friends are sassy.

As a musician, I've met several famous musicians, especially classical and jazz, along with a number of famous singers and dancers.

Most of them, almost all, are delightful, friendly, down to earth people. A few notable exceptions--but definitely exceptions.

It's the mediocre, the breaking acts, close but not yet there, that can be ungodly terrors at times.

Ha ha yeah!  I've always heard that guy was seriously a total prick back then.  He probably still is except nobody knows it's him, so instead of "Jimme Walker was just a dick to me" it's "That old loud dude was a real dick to me.  Wonder who he was?"

Dee Snider (lead singer of "Twisted Sister" fame). His son Jesse (also a cool kid) played football on the same semi-pro team as my ex Master. Dee came to a lot of the games and brought his younger daughter who played with my daughter, i hung out with his wife, and Jesse's then-fiance, and Dee too, of course. Real down to earth guy, total class act. As a matter of fact once they had cameras following them around filming a reality show AKA Ozzy-style, but the show never went to air because they're too much of a "normal" family with not enough drama.

Drew Barrymore was filiming "Music and Lyrics" in front of our apartment in NYC. i was walking back from getting my nails done when she stepped out of her trailer in front of me followed by her publicist/handler. There was a group of about 6 girls waiting for her dying to get her autograph - Drew stopped and signed them all and talked with the girls while the handler was trying to get her to leave - i was quite impressed by how sweet she was.

Once had dinner at the table next to Alec Baldwin. Didn't even realize it was him until the waiter said something. i didn't interrupt his meal.

Saw lots of stars in NY, really - the building next to us was always having something filmed there (Spiderman 3, Enchanted, Music and Lyrics, some Denzel Washington movie, others). The one thing is that they're regular people just like us, just have a different job that keeps them in the public eye.

My ex used to say that the best way to live a fabulous life is privately. i tend to agree.

Throughout my life I have met so many famous people that I cannot even list. The funny thing is that most have been fairly decent. What I found is that, quite often, the public persona, the personality that you would imagine to be, is a 180 from the reality. The sluts are not, the bitches/jerks are not, the sweet/nice/smart are not, etc. Not always that way, but more often than not.

Something most humorous to me, many people expect the famous to be better, smarter, make better choices, than 'regular' people. Especially if the famous person has a public persona that is well liked.

My most star struck, memorable famous persons meeting, was many years ago when I got to meet some of the original 'Rat Pack'. I swear to all I hold holy that was one of the coolest few days of my life. Regardless of how, why, the events leading up to and after, I walked on clouds for weeks after.

For those Brits out there - I met Rick Parfitt of Quo fame - thoroughly nice guy. Son is a prick though.

And Sir Alan Sugar - a very smart, down-to-earth guy who is totally as rude as he is on the tv, but also with a wicked sense of humour. A guy I'd work with again, in a heartbeat.

I met Bill Gates once too - he pours a mean cup of coffee! And he's very polite, friendly and a thoroughly nice guy.

I lived in London for ten years and whilst living there, I bumped into more famous people than I can recall. I shared an apartment with Naveen Andrews, of Lost fame - off his trolley at the time (I think he is better now). Kate Winslet (encountered in a French Connection store in Covent Garden) was haughty as hell, but then again, she had just filmed Heavenly Creatures and she was probably floating off on her newly found fame. The coolest was Ewan McGregor: we literally bumped into each other on Oxford Street. He was profusedly apologetic and very, very friendly *sigh*. And a babe. Prince Charles, Harry and William laughed at my stunned face from the confines of their Bentley (or whatever that massive car was) once, in St John's Wood. I was on my way to sign on .

Nice.  A friend of mine spent a year in London and managed to bump into Jude Law in an elevator.  My friend and his boyfriend were guests of the boyfriend's family at Home House and so he didn't dare make a scene by fawning or asking for an autograph or anything.  I've always (genuinely) liked the fact that the club considered a couple of 20something dudes spending the weekend together well within the bounds of discretion and good taste; but bothering movie stars who drop by to visit a guest is considered unforgivably vulgar.

I thought I saw Jarvis Cocker once at a club in London, but it turned out to just be some other super-emaciated dude with enormous sunglasses.

I don't know if you'd call them famous, but I met Dossie Easton .  She was great.  She stayed in my room, while visiting as Event Speaker at Whipstock.  I still joke around about Dossie Easton leaving her bra in my bed!!  Wow, what a wonderful lady.  I was infatuated with her from the moment I saw her.  A genuinely beautiful woman, both inside and out.  The life she led is really very inspiring.  Too bad I was so infatuated, I was too nervous to say much of anything to her, but I enjoyed listening to her talk of her life.

I also met Arnold Palmer, though I didn't know it was him at the time.  I was a young, naive 20 year old blonde flying for the first time.  Next to me sat a distinguished older gentleman.  During our small talk, I asked him why he was flying to Texas.  He told me he was going to a golf tournament.  In my supreme ignorance I said cheerfully, "Wow, you must be pretty good to be flying all the way to Texas for a golf tournament."  He just laughed, one of those genuinely amused laughs, and said, "I do ok."  It was a couple weeks later, when I saw him on a motor oil commercial, and recognized him as the man I sat next to on the plane.  He really was very nice.

Most Americans probably won't know him, but Ben Elton once sat next to me on the Piccadilly Line - he was pouring over The Daily Telegraph (a very conservative rag). I couldn't help but point out that it was surprising to see him, a notoriously leftwing person, read 'that'. He replied that "you have to know your enemy". Bizarre: the whole train was mesmerized by the exchange and trying not to watch.

In London, it was considered bad form to ask for autographs when famous people were just making their way around - they're trying to be incognito after all. I have no idea how it is today...

I only met celebrities when I lived in California, not since I moved to West Virginia.

When I was 17 and had just moved back to California, my roommate took me garage saleing and when we were headed back to her car, another car pulled up.  Norman Fell got out.  He had played on Three's Company as the landlord.  Anyway, that was my first celebrity sighting and I was just stunned.  (No, I've never asked for autographs.)

I don't remember the ones I saw while doing movie extra work, but I did stop and gawk while part of an episode of Scarecrow and Mrs. King was being shot in Glendale, I made myself late watching Kate Jackson and Bruce Boxeleightner (probably misspelled that).

Another was one of the kids from Fame who also put out a few records, he and a friend went into a store like Walgreens that was near my job.  They entered through the door about a second before me, lol.

Our theater started started showing prescreenings, I forgot the proper name for it.  It was a Crocodile Dundee movie and the actor showed up with his family, whispers went around the staff that he seemed close to his female co-star, who also showed up.

A very well known singing celebrity came too, with a hot car with uber coats of wax on it...and we all saw that it wasn't his wife who was on his arm.  Can't remember his name and wouldn't quite want to say it either, lol.  The women thought he was a rat, but the guys kept finding excuses to go outside to his car and drool over it.

The blond guy from CHiPs showed up with someone, he was soft spoken and had lots of calluses on his hands.  Seemed like a nice guy.

Henry Winkler was a complete sweetie.  After his visit to our theater, this huge expensive basket from a classy bakery would arrive, and those of us in management were in heaven...I'm the one who called dibs on the chocolate ones.

There's someone I have to add to this list out of gratitude, even though I never met him.  Around 4 years ago, I had just finished my 4th chemo.  Chemos 3 and 4 had been taken back to back, had lasted over 9 months and neither had worked.  I was on "wait and see" and at an all time low that I couldn't kick free of.  I spent a lot of time at a fanclub forum on EZ Board, and when I hit rock bottom, my friends (2 I had met in person) went behind my back and suddenly things began arriving in the mail.  The fanclub had been for an English actor named Alan Rickman, some Harry Potter fans would recognise him better as Professor Severus Snape.  Anyway, some of the girls sent me pix of him from their printer (mine was broken, lol), others sent scraps of HP fabric I hadn't seen before, bookmarks, HP stickers, and they pooled some money together to get me 2 DVDs...Mesmer and Robin Hood; Prince of Thieves (Rickman was the Sheriff, and this was the extended European version, yum), and another woman who lived in Europe went to a reputable company that sold autographed photos of celebrities and they bought me one.  So I had an autograph, my very first.  But...something else happened.

A large envelope from England arrived.  From Alan Rickman.  I was squealing as bad as any teenybopper fangirl, lol.  I will never forget that moment as long as I live.

I got several autographed photos, and a calendar with scenes of peaceful countryside stuff.  I learned that his father had died from cancer.  Within the year, I was in remission.  For no reason.  The girls made me take pix of everything, including the envelopes and letter from his secretary.  Turns out that my name written on the envelope with the pictures...was in his handwriting, not in hers.  The girls almost screamed themselves hoarse when they discovered that and told me about it.  I hadn't noticed.  <has the grace to blush>

As a little whoville who, i was given a lesson in juggling by one of the Smother's Brothers.  Kurt Cobain was an alright guy, if a lil' drug-addled, when still in Aberdeen--dunno' about after.  Rob Halford seemed an incredibly nice guy, the few times i ran into him. Meeting Jewel was fairly unpleasant, but it might have been that her evening wasn't going well.  Anne Rice seemed really distant and cold.  Roger Ebert is, well, my first thought was, "i wish he was my grandpa".
*Shrug*
i tend not to realize until afterward that the person i was just talking to is well-known.

Exactly. I live in the middle of the sticks, yet until their deaths in the past few years, my neighbors included a world famous poet and a world renowned cellist. Most people had no idea--they were just people.

No one will know who this is probably, but at 17 I shared the stage once with Eugene Fodor when he played with the orchestra I was playing in. I even had a solo during one of the pieces...go me!

I met the playwright David Henry Hwang (M. Butterfly) when his play Family Devotions was opening in SF- my ex was the assistant stage manager. We all went out to a local bar afterwards and David and his wife Ophelia gave the ex and I a ride home when they saw us on the street waiting for a taxi. He was quiet but friendly and interesting...she was snooty and bitchy.

My kids and I met Tony Hawk and his son once at the airport when we were all waiting for a flight....lovely man. I worked with the green/white Power Ranger (Jason Frank) once at our local martial arts school when he was there for a fundraiser. His star was waning then but apparently he didn't get the memo yet and was kind of a dickhead. It was a long day.

I dated the truck driver for Lynyrd Skynyrd for some time and am still close friends with him. He drove a semi with their equipment for 18 years...has amazing stories to tell, not just about them but tons of other major acts like Kiss, Aerosmith, and ZZtop. This man's older brother is the president of the Hells Angels Oakland chapter- took over for Sonny Barger. I never met him but would love to get the chance someday- that would be very interesting.

The ex and I own a restaurant in MD and Stevie Wonder came in around Thanksgiving with his family that lives in the area. During dinner he was singing with one of his young nieces...lovely man, wonderful family.

I taught at a school where Tom Clancy's kids went, now his grandkids go there. Every year back then he and the ex wife would donate a chance to go to an Oriole's game and sit in the owner's box for all the teachers. He wasn't at the game I went to but his ex was. She's a reserved but nice woman. Oh...and he and the current wife have eaten at our restaurant as well a couple of times since they live in the area.
