Goertzel identified three traits as being correlated with a belief in conspiracy theories:

* anomia, the respondent stated a belief that he/she felt alienated or disaffection relative to “the system;”
* a tendency to distrust other people; and
* a feeling of insecurity regarding continued employment.

..."Greed is GOOD"

popeye1250 -> RE: The inner worlds of conspiracy believers (4/17/2010 5:22:14 PM)

It's the same with those "global warming" zombies.

Jlf, and add in a giant tendancy to "anal-retentivesness."

That analysis corresponds well to my personal observations jlf.

I've tried to see the theorists we have here as having "intellectual curiosity and an active imagination", taking a sympathetic approach on that basis and engaging with them to find out more and weigh up their claims in a spirit of generosity, not to mention intellectual curiosity and imagination on my part.

well you need to make your claims on point.

But just lately I'm afraid, my sympathy and patience is wearing ever more thin. I am reaching the point of exasperation with the ridiculous claims they advance, the bunkum evidence they present - if that is, they present any - and the erroneous conclusions to which they leap, time after time.

again you need to direct your counter on point.  I can always tell when I am on target because people argue off point or double talk demonstrating the internal conflict.  I am nice if they.

Having been here a few years now I can say that the subject matter prevalent on these off topic boards of late is dominated by conspiracy theories, endlessly rehashed, in a way they never were at any other period of my participation here. To such an extent that given the exasperation they provoke in me, its becoming less and less attractive to even log on except for the entertainment value of poking certain participants with a stick and watching others do likewise.

well the problem is LE is that there is no end to the exasperation for people who cannot effectively counter claim.  Most people who try to counter just throw shit at the wall and hope somewhere a peanut might stick.  Thats not a debate thats like a pail of ducks with a nuke.  The best thing is to get involved in leftee rightee discussions that there are no real answers or answers that they can counter because the other party does the same crap.  Maybe environment global warming but then the hoax is out on that too.  Hmm well leftie rightee still works!

I understand of course that Mods permitting, participants can post what they like and its my choice whether I read it and get involved, but surely there is a limit to the intellectual curiosity and active imaginations of conspiracy theorists?

E

Hey your side posts literally all the conspiracy threads. Lucky if I posted 2 since I have been here.  The rest is all issue oriented.

pyroaquatic -> RE: The inner worlds of conspiracy believers (4/17/2010 5:35:05 PM)

Lol.

What 'inner-world'? I am by myself. I do not talk to friends because I do not have any friends in RL. I am a recluse.

However:
Some People targeted two large towers that represent 'the awesomeness of 'merica' and DESTROYED them.
Now the policies are different. Now we have Homeland Security. Now airports are suspect. One must cover their collective asses and make sure that it NEVER HAPPENS AGAIN.

Yet, It can happen again.

Yet, we still can't figure out where the hell all of these drugs are coming from.... be it Americans poisoning other Americans or some other culture.

We do not have to look far to find terrorists. Look at the gangs (before 9/11) and thugs that make a living off of being deceitful and violent. Tell me they do not conspire and organize crimes. Tell me there is no underground. Citizens conspire. You conspire to discredit these conspiracy believers. Irony?

Also.... does this subject pertains to me? Have I given LAckluster sources? Am I a conspiracy believer?

LadyEllen -> RE: The inner worlds of conspiracy believers (4/17/2010 5:37:21 PM)

You perhaps identify a valid point RO - that no one can effectively counter you and it appears they change the subject in trying to; but consider that I have called on you many times now to state your position clearly and provide your evidence in multiple situations - because I'm afraid we never quite get to that definitive place where we might pin you down so as to be able to counter you do we? And if anything it is this evasive approach by you that leads to the point you make - no one knows what it is you are claiming and why, so how exactly should they be able to counter you or indeed answer on point when the point remains unknown?

MC4Misfit -> RE: The inner worlds of conspiracy believers (4/17/2010 5:42:13 PM)

A friend of mine had a theory about the reasons why people like conspiracy theories.  His reasons were:

1)  It means that someone is in control  Life isn't chaos...there is order.  We may not like what "they" are doing, but someone is in control.  It's a comforting thought for some.

2)  They get to feel smart...after all, they saw thru the conspiracy.  Oh, they may not have the power to do anything about it, but at least they weren't taken it.  They're just too clever for that.

3)  They have someone to blame everything on...especially they're own failures. It's not their fault...they're being held down by the "secret Masters" or whatever you want to call them.  Since someone else is to blame, they don't have to accept any responsibility for anything.

I think those would explain a lot...or maybe "reality tv" is getting stale and they're looking for a replacement.

And isn't it interesting that of the 5 flags on this CM board- not one of them is a US flag?

Dude, those flags are there for translating the page into a different language. I presume you already speak English.

LadyEllen -> RE: The inner worlds of conspiracy believers (4/17/2010 5:45:23 PM)

Indeed HK. The exasperation of it all is beginning to outweigh the entertainment value.

Yeah RO,  you better work on becoming a better subject to the Crown.

Work on it!    You will be tested.   OBEY!  BOW!    You UCC whore!

My genius Uncle told me that if you make a thousand predections and have half a brain you can expect about a tenth of them to prove true. Simple math.

Do you think the more times you post something synonymous with this the less inane it will become?

Because it doesn't. I would have hated to have been on these forums since you joined and had to put up with 2/3 of your 17,000 posts being "BOW TO TEH QUEEN! LOL UK MIGHT! [insert vague, idiotic conspiracy with no basis in fact]!"

Tone it down.

FirmhandKY -> RE: The inner worlds of conspiracy believers (4/17/2010 6:22:26 PM)

“selective skepticism.” sounds a lot like confirmation bias.

We have a lot of that on the forums (hell, in life) as well, beyond conspiracy theorists.

Although, I'll have to agree with LadyE, the conspiracy theorists have transformed the boards in much less inviting and entertaining place.

This is the flip side to allowing openness, after the reign of Mod11.

I haven't blocked them, I just ignore them for the most part.

If more did the same, I'd hope that eventually they would go to more fertile grounds.

I cant come to the phone right now.

I am too busy wondering if I should bow to the Crown.

It's not even that--a thread here for this one, another for that one, fine.

Instead, it's the same people endlessly selling the same silly conspiracies regardless of the topic, thread after thread after thread. You could start talking about Nepalese prayer wheels, and in no time, it would be about conspiracies.

Aneirin -> RE: The inner worlds of conspiracy believers (4/17/2010 6:32:00 PM)

In this great world we inhabit with all its technologies, has anything really changed with humanity, are we any better than we were before, I think not, we are just as suspicious of power and those that hold it as ever before. Those that hold power are as always seen to be in a position to hold power and, it is assumed those that hold the power will do anything to retain or advance that power. As to a person that is seen to feel powerless and therefore conspiratoral, I think not, for I believe there are many different types of human being beyond what we perceive visually as different. What constitutes a person that feels they want no power over anyone else but themselves, what constitutes a person that prefers to live outside of society, are they mentally ill, weird or just different, are we blind to the differences in what we are.

But, one thing is certain, with the advances in communication technology, we as a species are becoming more highly strung than ever before, what we see and hear, is it really good for us, would we be better off without all this information ?

One thing I understand with the advances in communication technology, is the gathering and eductaion of personal thought, you are either with us, or you are a crank, people are being herded in their belief and those herds controlled, anyone who speaks different suffers under the weight of public idealism, comply or be cast out and labelled.

we went through that on the king thing and I told everyone precisely my position.  Its unfortunate that even though I was precise no one could provide the evidence indicting I was wrong yet hold me accountable.

All I can do is clearly state my position and I did that but it was not satisfactory because everyone expected I would hang myself like they most often do.

I can be very disappointing I know.

yes- but WE ARE in s state of emergency. We are also in 2 undeclared wars.

So manners- don't apply.   Not with all the blood.
