Sanity -> Behavior Placement (4/17/2010 8:58:15 PM)

The subliminal brushes against the political as General Electric (parent of NBC) begins selling "green" products through modifying behavior, with a new twist on an old idea:

quote:

What Your TV Is Telling You to Do

NBC Universal's Shows Are Sending Viewers Signals to Recycle, Exercise and Eat Right. Why?

In just one week on NBC, the detectives on "Law and Order" investigated a cash-for-clunkers scam, a nurse on "Mercy" organized a group bike ride, Al Gore made a guest appearance on "30 Rock," and "The Office" turned Dwight Schrute into a cape-wearing superhero obsessed with recycling.

Forget product placement, NBC Universal is trying "behavior placement" with some of its shows. Characters from programs such as "30 Rock" and "The Office" are acting out eco-friendly behaviors that advertisers hope will sway viewers. WSJ's Amy Chozick reports.

Coincidence? Hardly. NBC Universal planted these eco-friendly elements into scripted television shows to influence viewers and help sell ads.

The tactic—General Electric Co.'s NBC Universal calls it "behavior placement"—is designed to sway viewers to adopt actions they see modeled in their favorite shows. And it helps sell ads to marketers who want to associate their brands with a feel-good, socially aware show.

Unlike with product placement, which can seem jarring to savvy viewers, the goal is that viewers won't really notice that Tina Fey is tossing a plastic bottle into the recycle bin, or that a minor character on "Law and Order: SVU" has switched to energy-saving light bulbs. "People don't want to be hit over the head with it," says NBC Universal Chief Executive Jeff Zucker. "Putting it in programing is what makes it resonate with viewers."

I find this really interesting. thanks Sanity. But there also seems to be a bit of self-depricating humor in it. Kinda tongue in cheek. At least the video I watched. I wonder how serious they really are or is it a spoof?

Musicmystery -> RE: Behavior Placement (4/17/2010 9:04:38 PM)

It's as old as radio--putting the sponsor's product into the show's plot.

vincentML -> RE: Behavior Placement (4/17/2010 9:07:12 PM)

A bit different MM. Behaviors rather than products. Much more interesting.

Sanity -> RE: Behavior Placement (4/17/2010 9:10:13 PM)

The self-depreciating humor seemed like a stab at so-called "deniers" though, didn't it?

Or is that just me. I wasn't quite sure what to make of it, to tell you the truth.

Musicmystery -> RE: Behavior Placement (4/17/2010 9:11:41 PM)

Uh-huh. Like buying war bonds. Or waxing floors, doing laundry, smoking cigarettes.

Sanity -> RE: Behavior Placement (4/17/2010 9:12:00 PM)

Yes, I wrote that its a new twist on an old idea in my opening sentence.

Selling "green" now, instead of cigarettes.

Ever wonder how much of what we do is scripted by Hollywood?

Yeh, that did occur to me also. Might have to agree with you there.

Sanity -> RE: Behavior Placement (4/17/2010 9:18:15 PM)

Or voting for the "Green" candidate?

Smoking cigs was a big behavior sell from Hollywood in movies prior to the Surgeon General's warning. Patriotism and sacrifice in War were also big sells. Not so much since Vietnam tho.

slvemike4u -> RE: Behavior Placement (4/17/2010 9:19:31 PM)

Nah,they haven't directed me to wonder...perhaps that's next season?

Musicmystery -> RE: Behavior Placement (4/17/2010 9:19:39 PM)

Well, FOX clearly believes viewers are that easily swayed.

Sanity -> RE: Behavior Placement (4/17/2010 9:27:20 PM)

I think theres a pretty big difference between tuning in to an opinion oriented talk show on a news channel, hearing political messages there, and getting subliminal political or behavioral messages from entertainment venues. My ex wife and my daughter saw "Avatar" last weekend for example, and reported that the makers were laying the politics on awfully thick.

Dubbelganger -> RE: Behavior Placement (4/17/2010 9:35:29 PM)

So how is it "subliminal" if it's right in your fuckin' face?

And just like that the "subliminal" message contained within this thread is made clear.
I so love it when the world and it's inhabitants hold to their predicatable patterns....lol.

You really have to be careful about what you are viewing today. You let your ex take your daughter to see avatar? Are you nuts??? What in the hell is wrong with you? Might as well have tied them down and forced them to listen to the Communist Manifesto.

Liberals are everywhere trying to get into your brain. Not your bedroom. Those fuckers will call their show Boston Legal but it really is the Ted Kennnedy Hour.

The only way to remain pure of thought is to watch Fox 24/7.

LadyEllen -> RE: Behavior Placement (4/18/2010 6:18:21 AM)

Behaviour placement Sanity?

Now how would you feel if I were to advance an argument that the blame for the level of violence in society may be laid at the feet of decades of violence on TV and in films and lately in computer games? That the reason people are so violent is the influence such media has on their behaviour? They see characters with guns shooting others and then aspire to and adopt that same behaviour?

DarkSteven -> RE: Behavior Placement (4/18/2010 6:28:18 AM)

Sanity, thanks for starting a very thought-provoking thread.

I am having issues with this.  Not that I have any problems with this message that the networks are pushing, but that they are pushing any.  When they realize how much money they could make by selling ads to sponsors that are anti-gay or racist...

pahunkboy -> RE: Behavior Placement (4/18/2010 6:42:00 AM)

I thank Sanity for this most compelling post.

Sanity -> RE: Behavior Placement (4/18/2010 7:03:15 AM)

Vince made the point that for years Hollywood promoted cigarettes and wars and patriotism...

Its not so much what they're selling, its the idea that we're being controlled to some extent, in this example for profit and for political gain.
