quote:

The SPLC began when Morris Dees recognized the lucrative potential of the '72 McGovern campaign's mailing list. Exactly when the SPLC jumped the shark has long been a subject of debate, but it was certainly at some point prior to their identification of columnist Don Feder (!) as a menace to society. Potok's ironic quote appears in a story that portrays Michelle Malkin as a menace to society, and reasonable people have begun to notice the Potokian pattern. Basically, if you're a conservative and you haven't been denounced by Mark Potok yet, you need to stop goofing off and get to work. I've been on Potok's Menace To Society List since May 2000, when I published a feature article based on an interview with Kansas author Laird Wilcox:
"There is an anti-racist industry entrenched in the United States that has attracted bullying, moralizing fanatics, whose identity and livelihood depend upon growth and expansion of their particular kind of victimization."
That quote is from Wilcox's book, The Watchdogs, which among other things explains what he describes as the "links-and-ties" method by which the SPLC and similar outfits create the false impression of ironclad connections between groups and individuals based on incidental associations. Wilcox is himself a veteran researcher of extremist "fringe" movements, whose records comprise The Wilcox Collection On Contemporary Political Movements at the University of Kansas Library. Unlike Morris Dees, however, Wilcox doesn't have the McGovern donor list or an ax-grinding agenda against Republicans, so he never gets quoted by the Washington Post.

How typical that the Spectator would defend inaction in front of racism. The staff of the Spectator would probably have prefered for the KKK to continue its terror campaigns to this day. How convenient for the Spectator to forget that the SPLC was instrumental in the demise of the KKK. How easy it is to gloss over the fact that Dees successfully fought on behalf of black students against segregationist schools. How utterly cynical of the Spectator to imply that money motivates the SPLC when in fact, it is the kind of thing that motivates the Spectator's contributors.

Thanks for the update.

Hey, I hear KFC cures cancer. Maybe you should go find out for us, report back.

A video clip of Jerry Kammer by Media Matters: he charges the SPLC is mainly about raking in the money: Morris Dees “learned that he can take in more money by exaggerating the size and menace of the Klan”  — “Jihad for dollars.” Kammer points out, many of the most trenchant critics of the SPLC have been on the left.

popeye1250 -> RE: Southern Poverty Law Center Publishes Patriot Hit List (4/22/2010 9:40:39 AM)

I wonder if the SPLC is getting any taxdollars?
What is there, like 85 KKK members in the whole country now? If the SPLC is getting taxpayer dollars they wouldn't want those dollars to dry up would they?
Anyone know?

Oh, wonderful another white male that things racism is dead. You think that all the African Americans hung by a rope in the last century were at the hands of the KKK? Think again bubba.

Why is Ron Paul on this "list"?

DYB, both sides of my family came to the U.S. from Ireland long after the Civil War and slavery and they were never involved in any of that.
It doesn't mean anything to me, my family had similar issues in Ireland with the English but I don't "hate" the English because of it.
You shouldn't lump all "white males" together until you know who you're talking to.

"Interesting how the only websites that come up regarding Morris Dees in a negative light are those of wingnuts"

And what tells you this ? Is it something in the URL or do you have a seriously advanced browser or what ?

We have .com, .org. .gov, .edu, .us, so now we need .nut ? That would sort everything out really fast.

That statement almost asserts that everyone on Dees' side is an articulate, understanding, open minded and logically thinking mature person. Everyone else is a knuckle dragging, beer guzzling, gun toting, pickup truck driving hillbilly named bubba. Is that what you were trying to say ?

Well in that case, GWB saved the US oil industry and there were no mysterious deaths in AK when Clinton was governor. The Kennedys didn't run moonshine, they were doctors delivering medicine. FDR had no reason to believe that the Japanese would dare react to his sanctions and embargos. And Oliver North was only guilty of being innocent. Further Carter's protecting the great humanitarian known as the Shah of Iran was based only on humanitrian goals, purely altruistic in nature, having nothing to do with money.

Y'all sound like everybody in the world is a philanthropist and everyone is good and kind to one another and I must be fucked up here. Maybe instead of getting on the same page we all need to get on the same TV news channel, because for some reason I am seeing something different.

Yes, but is Ron Paul a terrorist?  He is on the list.

Termyn8or -> RE: Southern Poverty Law Center Publishes Patriot Hit List (4/22/2010 5:17:17 PM)

Hunky, when I get a spare six months to read the patriot act, I will probably find that Ron Paul is only a few words away from meeting the legal definition of a terrorist. (notice how quiet he's been lately)

HEY, all you refined researchers can do me a big favor. With your internet searching skills perhaps you can find out who actually wrote the patriot act. I'd like to know who wrote the equivalent of at least a trilogy of novels in a matter of days.

We could add in secret laws.  We now have secret laws.

thornhappy -> RE: Southern Poverty Law Center Publishes Patriot Hit List (4/22/2010 6:09:45 PM)

How would you know, if they are secret?

Viet Dinh is given credit.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viet_D._Dinh

Assuming it was written entirely after 9/11, not true at least according to some claims, it was written in about 5 weeks.

Isn't he a tea party guy?

Okay, find me a moderate article that criticizes SPLC and I'll read it.

Do you have any idea how easy it is to tell if a site is wingnutted? English is my native language; it's not hard.

Termyn8or -> RE: Southern Poverty Law Center Publishes Patriot Hit List (4/22/2010 9:03:27 PM)

Leave it to you Ken. Ironic as it may seem I think I am starting to like you. Like poking a sore tooth with your tongue.

Five weeks is plausible, and there will never be proof that it got started before the attack. But I wrote a short story the prints up into about a hundred pages, it took me over a year.

Regardless of that, the pages number in the thousand of the patriot act, and if our "leaders" were doing their job they should have read the whole thing in how long ?

In fact that borderline terrorist Ron Paul introduced a bill that would require a certain amount of time for reps to read any bill before a vote was taken. Silly Ron, his job is not to question why, just to vote or die. And if he voted no he could be responsible for millions of deaths. Wait now, he might've voted against it, despite it's passing I guess he needs to be punished because post hoc ergo propter hoc reasoning proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that he is responsible for the US attacking the wrong country.

I know I am getting a bit salty these days. I am really getting sicjk of the idiocy in the world and that is NOT directed at you. At least you can make a point. While I am not bowing to God Ken here, you are a cut above the normal rabble in the world. Most of the people in this country, if they had been born into my family would be buried in the backyard. Or fed to the dogs, but I don't keep animals.

Enough hijack for now. Back to the thread.

Mo Dees is an American Hero.

The SPLC also tracks Black Supremacists. Who, frankly, haven't blown up a government building in, like, forever. I'm glad someone is keeping track of the White Supremacist Militias and similar fucked-in-the-heads.
