I have a thing about plagiarism.

As in you got caught once doing the same thing and are now on some insane mission on the internet (of all places) to make sure everyone else gets caught too?

Good luck with that one, bro!

What on earth are you talking about?  Why don't you just cut your losses and draw the line at defamation.

I'm done with this one.

And right you are. Especially in the bdsm scene there's a growing tendency to post other peoples work without prior permission.

What am I quoting now?

Chaingang, with all due respect, I think you've missed the point.  Not to mention that your quote does infact give credit to the author ;) --negating the legalities.

You are misinformed about 'information not working that way anymore'.  The internet falls under the copyright laws (if you pick up any book, you'll notice in the copyright 'electronic or mechanical means' is cited--that's the internet).

Ignorance is not a defence either.  Saying, "I didn't know" won't help you in a lawsuit.  And yes, many publishers willl actively persue a lawsuit stemming from the internet.  While I don't think fergus meant any harm, he'd still need to give a copyright notice...at the very least credit the author and/or sources.  You might think CM is obscure enough to be safe, but it's not.  Publishers hire people specifically for the purpose of internet theft--it's big money they're losing.  It's theft, plain and simple....who wants 'theif' attached to their name?

Master owns a publishing company.  We deal with the legalities of contracts, copyright and publishing daily.  It's a serious offense and has very serious penalties.

Thank you for the interesting read, fergus.  I hope you'll add the proper credit, and I hope the material really gives people something to think about.

Have a good one, everyone!

Thank you Valeca,

I though I had, but apparently I did not ... to be sure, I am removing the material, several posts at a time.  In the mean time, I encourage people to look into the Tao Te Ching, whether it be Stephen Mitchell's translation, or another.  I am sure you can find Mr. Mitchell's version for under $10.00 at any Borders, or other translations on the web.

It's not just about having an original thought, but probably even more about devoting the time, energy, en willingness to put an idea into writing and having the right to decide where and how that is published. Inspirations versus perspiration.

The horror that Chaingang doesn't see, but that I do see, is that if plagiarism becomes the rule, as seems to be the case more and more, many of those who now write free informative articles will cease to do so if they don't even get the credits for their time investment.

One of the rules with having a Master, in the old way,  was to give him credit for everything,  The ideal around this was that the Master shared his insights with people around him, passing on his wisdom, yet the disciple recieved only the words, a seed inside him that could grow if nutured, he did not have the realisation yet, so giving credit to the originator was to keep the line true back to the originator and so keep close to the meaning and realisation.

Maybe that was the first step towards preventing plagarism, or, copy-catting. *grin* it was designed to "Keep it real"

Mark my words: Copyright is dead. Patent is dead. I think it's possible that private property is dead too.

Now who am I quoting?

You're MISquoting William Gibson.  The correct quote is "The street tries to find its own uses for things."  (He knows the difference between "it's" and "its."  You might want to look into that.)

Anyway, in your world you can believe that copyrights and patents are dead, but in the real world, attorneys get paid a lot of money to protect intellectual property.

Yawn.

HAHA!  Now that is funny.  It's almost like watching a nilla talk about the world of BDSM.  Good one.  Looking back at the sorry state of my own post, I just want to smack myself for not hitting the edit button before I missed the opportunity to make corrections.  So much for being in a hurry...ugh.

Actually, the real quote is: "The Street finds its own uses for things..." But I think Gibson has said it different ways too. So many sources misquoted - misattribution is the soul of the street having its own uses for things. Ideas aren't stagnant, they move and evolve.

BTW, in the real world no one - including the government, esp. the government - gives a fuck about IP law. It's just a bullshit power-money struggle that will get sorted out eventually. Probably in favor of the commons. Oh wait, that battle has already been fought and the commons have declared a de facto victory - welcome to planet P2P. Say hello to your overlords in China...

But keep fighting the good fight, bro - it amuses me that you should do so. Consider it a command. It'll be like watching a man being covered in a giant pile of shit that never stops piling on top of him. My best advice is for you to ask for a breathing straw for Xmas.

No it's not.  You'll find the "real quote" on p. 69 of Count Zero.

Anyway, I'd advise you to try to sell patented products.  If copyrights and patents are really dead, that would be a terrific way to get rich quick.  You could seriously undercut the competition.

This has become a stupid pissing contest--and elephants piss further.

Buh-bye.

You're right, knock-offs and pirated products do sell very well. Now you are getting it!

BTW, that thing about the quote keeps going over your head. Sorry. Whoosh!

Of course there are those that care, foremost among them the men and women that struggle for years creating the music and words and images that make the world a bit more enjoyable. Because I appreciate them and their talent and hard work, things like copyrights and patents matter. Just because slimey fuckers in China or New York or San Paulo can steal and leech doesn't mean it's ok to do so.

And I am not including fergus in the slimey fucker group, by the way. He was just trying to share something he felt strongly about, not trying to steal someone else's thunder, or profit from his posting of the Tao.

I sorely do appreciate that, Level.

and I am in the process of correcting it as we speak :)
