At our house, it's generally not advisable, because family drops by randomly (and sometimes gets flashed as I make the 2 step trip from my bedroom to the bathroom and I don't know that they are there ...), and we have a large number of animals that have to be cared for, plus have sharp nails and teeth - and you really don't want a dog to mistake any parts for chew toys ...

As to it being common, I think you're living in a wank fodder world.  It's not common.  Everyone has different preferences, and it's not really practical to enforce nudity in most situations.  For starters, they'd never let you come back to Howard Johnson's again.
