Brain -> Canadians Live Longer In Better Health Than Americans (4/29/2010 12:45:17 AM)

Of course I’m a liar, I have been accused of lying here before, and this study is another lie to ignore.  The study was paid for with the proceeds of amputated dead body parts – not funny?  So much for my pathetic attempt at humor.  We used to barter, paying doctors with chickens, as per your aspiring senator from Las Vegas, now we’re more sophisticated.

Canadians Live Longer In Better Health Than Americans
by T Goodman

In 2002 and 2003, the U.S. and Canada participated in a joint survey to compare the impact of health care in both countries.  The findings, about to be published in BioMed Central's journal Population Health Metrics, favor Canadians for health and longevity.
The joint survey, the Canada/United States Survey of Health 2002/03, was conducted by telephone of 8,688  white Canadians and Americans to try to keep the data strictly about disparities in health and health care between the two populations.
The researchers learned that Canadians can expect to live in 'perfect health' 2.7 years longer than Americans although the richest Canadians live about 1.3 years longer than the poorest Canadians.  Additionally, the Canadian life span is longer by more than two years; the average life expectancy for Canadians is 79.7 years and for Americans 77.2 years.

Well I don't know about the other Canadians, but you are going to have an ulcer by the time you hit 40 if you don't quit worrying so much about your neighbors. Wouldn't be a bit surprised to see lots of HBP meds in your future either.

But if this link gives you one more reason to feel superior over everyone else. Do enjoy[:)]

We all want everything in your little world to be sunshine and puppies, even if there isn't a whole lot of reality there.

Evidently not Americans. Wait, isn't Canada *in* America? I could have sworn ...

DomYngBlk -> RE: Canadians Live Longer In Better Health Than Americans (4/29/2010 8:42:05 AM)

Not really, it is Canada isn't it? Next thing you know you are going to tell me Mexico and Brazil are in America too!

So "America, love it or leave it" means I have to move to Europe?

Fellow -> RE: Canadians Live Longer In Better Health Than Americans (4/29/2010 12:21:34 PM)

There could be several reasons to explain the statistics. It is possible the health care system has nothing to do with it. The study should answer specifically why the difference?  Otherwise, it does not have much usefulness. Many Americans live longer than an average Canadian. You could be the one if you have good DNA and if you choose a healthy lifestyle.  Evidently, if you are wealthy you are likely to live longer.

DomYngBlk -> RE: Canadians Live Longer In Better Health Than Americans (4/29/2010 12:54:25 PM)

Overall, I'd say the Canadian situation is much more similar to Europe than ours. The lack of worry about medical treatment and where that is coming from can't be overlooked. We are only now addressing portability of insurance plans when they've had it since the 60's. But there is no escaping the differences.

Wrong, this is a statistical analysis with the same methodology as other studies that seek to determine the efficacy of various wellness therapies like exercise, supplements and the like and all manor of other studies.

Obviously you don't like the findings but if the Canadian health care (and yes, it is all about health care) model is supposed to be so bad as we are informed by so many...where are all of the dead Canadians ?

Regarding what I italicized......I seriously question the validity of the data when the people in the search parameters are restricted to a specific segment of the general population.

Actually, it reduces the variability of the data to a degree.

There are still a lot of other cultural differences, and I suspect that the ethnicity of the Canadians (and thus their genetic makeup) is more homogeneous than that of the USA citizens.  I wouldn't be surprised if risk factors such as smoking, drinking, etc. were different as well.  There is a lot more land per person in Canada, which I assume would translate to lower pollution levels.

I'm not saying that the results are not due to health care differences - I'm saying that that's just one possible factor.

And we use less Zs and when we do, we call them Zed instead of Zee. This all contributes to our longer lives.
