delmano -> seeking help from submissive who is avid reader (4/29/2010 12:02:44 PM)

Seeking female bottom who is an avid reader of the romance/erotic fiction genre, to help proofread, edit, and possibly collaberate on erotic romance novel. I seek a woman's perspective.

This will be a medium term relationship (6 months perhaps) during the finishing of the book. I have 90,000 words written; a typical novel is 120-180k words.

I prefer someone sweet, sensual and affectionately natured, with excellent written communication skills in english, and is or was at least slightly involved in the BDSM community. Can not tolerate gregarious, outspoken or opinionated. If you are in a bound relationship, you must have your Master/partner's permission.

Must have time available to put toward this project. If collaboration or editing is provided and book is published, a compensation agreement will be arranged.

Contact will be primarily by email. If personal meeting is mutually desired, it will be at a local munch or perhaps BDSM Club... however please note, it will be as spectator only. This is not a "play" relationship.

If interested, tell me a little about yourself, your submissive knowledge, your relationship situation, and why you think you will be a help to me.

Is this novel going to be published?

Are you expecting this help for free?

Hi,

Please send me the synopsis, the first three chapters of your book, the publishers you intend to submit to. If you can actually write, I'll consider devising a co-author agreement.

Please also prepare a 1000 word essay on why you think submissives are brainless, describing, in detail, how your superiority will help you write publishable BDSM erotica.

Isn't that what an editor does?  Last time I checked, it's part of an editor's job to proof read a manuscript, make and suggest changes with the author before said manuscript gets printed.

DesFIP -> RE: seeking help from submissive who is avid reader (4/29/2010 1:59:19 PM)

You are asking someone to both proofread and edit your book for spelling and syntax as well as making suggestions for plot changes. That's two separate paid positions there, proof reader and editor. How much are you paying?

Because assuming a sub would love to do all this work for you for free in order to serve someone she doesn't know is rude as hell.

You're looking for something for nothing. That's wrong. Man up and pay for the substantial amount of work you need done. I might suggest asking Greenery Press if they can recommend someone. Do expect to pay going wages for it.

I don't think that many editors (even erotica editors) have the RL experience to supply the female submissive's point of view. Plus, if the OP's story sucks, the editor will stop reading after the first few pages.

It's been my experience that an editor has to see a ton of potential before he or she will bother reading the whole manuscript, let alone offer suggestions for improvement.

(Hey OP, if you're reading this thread: 120,000 words is not the normal length for erotica. Try shorter. You might also submit parts of your work for comment on the proper CM forum (Creative something or other) and ask for comment. I did that years ago and got bunches of help from the CM folk... and now me's a published authorix!!! Yay!)

You will find that many of us are avid readers, as well as well-spoken and wonderful writers.
You will also find that many of us are "gregarious, outspoken and/or opinionated" It often comes along with all of that intelligence and creativity you seek. [;)]
I'm assuming that you are looking for someone to be a partner (which means a 50/50 split of all profit paid)
The problems with arrangements like these honestly, are many.
Number one, there is usually one partner who doesn't adequately fulfill his or her obligation.
Number two, if there is a contract (of which there should be one) they are often so vague as to be ineffective.
And thirdly, you never know for sure who you're dealing with on the internet. You may do six months of work and then watch as the partner disappears with all the work you did. It's difficult to persue someone you don't know much (if anything) about, and also difficult to prove that you created and/or collaborated on said intellectual property.
You're not doing anything wrong by asking OP, you may be totally on the up and up. But people should be aware of the complications that could arise before they commit themselves.

ETA: OP, there is a place that allows erotic authors to put their work up and sell it as e-books. (a story or novella that you download on your computer or on kindle) Go to www.A1AdultEBooks.com That might be the best option for you at this time.

Drifa -> RE: seeking help from submissive who is avid reader (4/29/2010 6:11:49 PM)

I am a professional technical writer and editor, and I write my own erotica. I charge $70 per hour for writing and editing, $150 for technical illustration services, and usually with a two hour minimum in advance. I'm unsure why exactly someone would want to help you on a lower fee scale, or without an enforceable contract.

So you can't tolerate someone who is opinionated. But yet you want someone's opinion........

DesFIP -> RE: seeking help from submissive who is avid reader (4/29/2010 6:39:03 PM)

If he doesn't want any opinions, then he isn't ready to submit this to an editor. Because he won't just get opinions, he'll get flat out orders of what to do in order to hopefully make it saleable

I am[1] seeking female bottom who is an avid reader of the romance/erotic fiction genre, to help proofread, edit, and possibly collaborate on erotic romance novel. I would like[2] a woman's perspective.

This project will last approximately 6 months.[3] I have 90,000 words written; a typical novel is 120-180k words.

I prefer someone sweet, sensual and affectionately natured[4], who is highly proficient in written[5] English [6]. I[1] cannot tolerate gregarious[7], outspoken or opinionated[8]. If you are in a bound relationship, you must have your Master/partner's permission.

You[1] must have time available to put toward this project. If [9] editing is provided and book is published, a compensation agreement will be arranged.[10]

Our[1] contact will be primarily by email. If a[1] personal meeting is mutually desired, it will be at a local munch or perhaps BDSM Club... however please note, it will be as spectator only. This is not a "play" relationship.[11]

If you are[1] interested, please[12] tell me a little about yourself, your submissive knowledge, your relationship situation, and why you think you will be a help to me.

[1] Pick a style and stick with it. If you are going to write your request as an add, follow through, if you are going to make a post, follow through. Personally I would go for a post style because of the length.
[2] Redundant, you already used the word "seeking" in the previous line.
[3] This whole comment doesn't make sense. Based on what do you consider 6 months to be a "medium term" relationship?
[4] Either go for "with a sweet, sensual and affectionate nature" or "who is sweet, sensual and affectionate."
[5] Sounded awkward.
[6] Redundant. This is a BDSM site; you're not going to find vanilla volunteers here.
[7] Are you sure this is the word you are looking for? Gregarious means "sociable" are you looking for a person that isn't sociable?
[8] Are you sure this is what you mean? You are looking for somebody to edit and to give an opinion, right? So why would you want them to not be opinionated and outspoken?
[9] Redundant
[10] Surely you mean that this agreement will be made prior to the start of the services you are asking for, right?
[11] If your intent is not to have a play relationship then why is it necessary that any meetings would be held at munches or BDSM clubs? What is wrong with meeting for coffee in any other public place? Really, because of the way you put this, it comes across like your intent is the opposite of what you claim it to be.
[12] It never hurts to be polite, even when addressing subs.

__________________________

I've edited books before, though not in English, but I would be really hesitant to take on a project with you even if adequate compensation is provided. If this post is any indication of your writing style, you are nowhere near the stage of bringing in another person to edit. You will need to do a lot more revisions yourself before you let anybody else read your work.
