It is evident from your reply to me MM that as usual, you are more interested in ripping apart what I am trying to accomplish than meeting me at some common ground where we can discuss. You made a lot of assumptions about me, which I'm not surprised I got from Firm & Treasure, but I am surprised I got from you. You use patronizing language like you do with all intelligent women. I used to find it enjoyable to debate with you. Now, not so much.

Wow, thompson and bella divine both think brainiac is a "critical thinker?

Brianiac must be so happy to have the support of such logical reasonable posters.

thompson, and neither of your questions is even related to my comment on her quoted assertion.

Well at least luckydawg was open to shifting his paradigm, which is more than I can say for most here! ;-)

Nope luckydog is just another individual who is capable of getting both feet in his mouth at the same time.

luckydawg -> RE: Critical Thinking & Logical Deduction Are Becoming Extinct Like The Dinosaur (5/3/2010 4:07:29 PM)

how so?

You are the one running from your lie here. http://www.collarchat.com/m_3188359/mpage_2/tm.htm#

And while you commented on my comment to Brainiac, it was a nonsense post, not related to reality or my point in anyway.

but you did have a "chick" talking to you for a while, so I imagine you will go all out to defend her. She even had an avatar with huge fake boobs.

and as usuall you resort to insults and such.

What I said was:
"Is it your position that you are a critical thinker and as such you can spot those who are not?"

You might have more success in discussing what I have said instead of what you want me to have said.

Brianiac must be so happy to have the support of such logical reasonable posters.
She seems to have your support

thompson, and neither of your questions is even related to my comment on her quoted assertion.

If you feel either unable or unwilling to answer any of my questions all you have to do is say so.

luckydawg -> RE: Critical Thinking & Logical Deduction Are Becoming Extinct Like The Dinosaur (5/3/2010 4:14:48 PM)

It is so funny the way idiots like thomspson use the "hundred unrelated questions" tactic. They rely on such cheap rhetorical tricks, because they can't actually debate using facts or logic.

I mean t is so dumb he thinks I am supporting Brianiac, Perhaps it is just the long term drug use by the guy.

and no t, that was not what you said. That was a small part of your reply to my reply to Brianiac.

5 meaningless questions, that had nothing to do with my point. and no I am not answering any of your derail off point questions.

Especially since you are a coward unwilling to back up your assertions.

Sort of. Contrary to popular opinion, I don't think that just because someone engages in critical thinking that they will become atheists. I do however think that they will have a paradigm shift of some kind.
I guess what I see is that many religions rely on blind faith and in order to maintain that, dogma is used and critical thinking is put aside. I was hoping for ideas that would show me the opposite or ways for the two to coexist. Some touched on this briefly but more where just interested in trying to prove my bias, which I exposed in my OP.

I guess some people aren't ready to break away from their paradigms.

In bold is what I believe as well. I have never said that atheism is the ultimate goal of critical thought, but rejecting dogma is. The fundamental tenants of Christianity is classic religious dogma. One cannot claim to be a Christian and say they aren't dogmatic. Domi tried to point this out to Firm earlier in this thread. Saying that "I believe that Jesus is the son of God" or "the Bible is the word of God" is not the same thing as saying"I believe in the Judeo-Christian ethic" or "I believe in a higher power." A critical examination and study of the first statements would lead one to make the paradigm shift to the second. Full blown atheism would be the holy grail, but not necessary.

Lucky,

I've found that life on the forums is so much more enjoyable when I simply do not pay much attention, nor react hardly at all to most of the posts of such people.

It simply gives them life.

So you think that all who represent a christian viewpoint on these formus thinks exactly the same thing, and that it is exactly what you used to think"

seriously?

From reading your posts it seems you don't even have a clue as to what critical thinking is. The above statement illustrates it perfectly.

But you and domi do rock and kick ass in here.....

Dawg, I know enough about what Treasure and Firm believe because they openly state that they are Christians, I know what the fundamental tenants of Christian faith are, I have never claimed to attribute any nuance of the faith to their set of beliefs (because I don't know), and I have debated them on religious and scientific topics over the past 2 1/2 years. I am pretty confident I got the big stuff right.

You don't think I'm capable of critical thought because you don't share my views? That's brilliant. Congratulations.

FYI...domi and I are the same person. You didn't know that?

luckydawg -> RE: Critical Thinking & Logical Deduction Are Becoming Extinct Like The Dinosaur (5/3/2010 4:26:49 PM)

So pretending that everyone who espouses Christianity thinks exactly the same isn't "dogmatic"?

It certainly is ignorant.

Dogmatism
1 : positiveness in assertion of opinion especially when unwarranted or arrogant
2 : a viewpoint or system of ideas based on insufficiently examined premises

Indeed. As I've mentioned at least a half dozen times, I have people in my immediate surroundings that I have the utmost respect for that have faith, strong faith even, and are critical thinkers. They are however not super strong disciples of dogma.

luckydawg -> RE: Critical Thinking & Logical Deduction Are Becoming Extinct Like The Dinosaur (5/3/2010 4:33:04 PM)

well brainiac, I would imagine that you are capable of it, it just seems you don't engage in it.

like for instance, you had to change what I said to argue against it. Which is rhetorical, not logical argument

only 849 posts in 2.5 years?

what name were you using before? I thought you seemed to have appeared here fully formed and knowing who everyone was.

I guess my problem is I do not see anything wrong with blind faith sometimes.  It is not a bad thing if it helps someone be a better person and live their life in a way that shows kindness and respect to others.  In fact, I would prefer to be that kind of person than a critical thinker.

In my family, and to some extent in my circle of friends, it is ok, and even expected to act in certain ways, and to do certain things, just because our family has always taught that as the way we want to live. And it makes us better people.
Course we wont discuss me being a slut and liking to dance and have the herbal therapy and such-lol.

I do not mean that as a put down to anyones beliefs, or ideals, but it takes all kinds to make this world go around. Neither wrong or right, just different.

[...]

My family sounds just like yours. Growing up I always thought we were better people, too. Then, I let my family know I was an atheist. My father shouted at a family gathering once, in front of my children who were 6 and 7 at the time, that I was going to hell and condemning them with me. They have not spoken to us since. My children are now 19 and 20. They have no family ties. In your book it's just different. In mine, it's wrong.

Firm, point me to one place in this thread where you didn't try to speak with some voice of authority and you changed your mind about something and let someone else's opinion even slightly sway you, allowing your paradigm to shift and I'll take that statement back.
