I don't believe that the battle is truly between religion and science - but between "dogmatism" and "free thought". Between the rejection of an external concept because it contradicts one or more firmly held beliefs and the willingness to accept new ideas as potentially valid no matter their genesis.

There are dogmatic scientists and there are free-thinking believers.

I like the way you put this. It makes a lot of sense to me. I also like how dissociate science from critical thinking. I hadn't looked at it that way before but it makes a whole lot of sense.

In fact, I like your whole post. Merci :-)

Luckydawg, Jefff is not perfect, and I like him that way, because do you know how annoying perfect people are? Any person willing to admit they are wrong and make retractions and humbly mean it are aces in my books.

Firm, I'm sorry you felt challenged like a 13 year old. I was trying to challenge you like a grown man.

I appreciate what you wrote here. There is a lot of sense it in and I agree with most of it.

But bottom line, you asked me why I wrote what I wrote and I told you why. In this thread, you have shown very little openness to other ideas. If you have done so in the past and plan to do so in the future, I look forward to seeing it.

- LA

Nobody ever really shows openness..Do they? They don't agree with you and they don't have too. On your OP I told you I did agree..Am I more open because of that?

I've read a lot of things I don't agree with but I'm willing to live and let live on most things..Does that make me more open to other ideas or does it say something different?

He does seem to take things a little personal(On this OP) but you can't do anything about that.

If you feel he is why continue to go on past a time or two of explaining your position?

LadyAngelika -> RE: Critical Thinking & Logical Deduction Are Becoming Extinct Like The Dinosaur (5/3/2010 6:01:47 PM)

Agreeing and disagreeing aren't forms of openness. Discussion about issues, asking questions, digging, bringing in other possibilities in a productive manner is openness. InvisibleBlack came around and disagreed with me but he did it in a respectful manner rather than being pedantic or inflammatory and it doesn't hurt that he really explained his point well.

He helped me shift my paradigm. Sounds kinda kinky, huh? ;-)

luckydawg -> RE: Critical Thinking & Logical Deduction Are Becoming Extinct Like The Dinosaur (5/3/2010 6:05:00 PM)

So LA, Did you read the his "retraction" (the actuall one I quoted)? You are losing Logical, critical thinking points if you consider,

""Whatever dude.... he was honorably discharged... he did not serve honorably.

But you don't give a shit. You don't care about anything except you and your precious view of what this country should be.

Knowing that you are out there claiming to be a proud American embarrasses me more than I can say."

That is a humbly meant retraction and admission of being wrong to you?

If it does, it says a lot about you.

You forgot the willingness to accept others beliefs as valid..not because you have empirical knowledge but because they are human like you and have a right to theirs as well.

I was being facetious and a smart arse..Pardon[:D]

I suppose to a pervert..Just about anything can sound kinky[;)]

What are you talking about?

luckydawg -> RE: Critical Thinking & Logical Deduction Are Becoming Extinct Like The Dinosaur (5/3/2010 6:11:01 PM)

Is your Name LA? It was clearly a response to LA's statement to me. I am not the only one who uses initials here, for convience.

I saw that Jefff stated that he made a retraction and I saw you not dropping it. I didn't see the post where you quoted his retraction. Admittedly, it isn't the most humble of retractions.

So now that this is settled, will you humbly retract all the uncalled for cat calling you sent my way ;-)

I agree but I think if Jefff spent less time blowing crap out his horn and actually lived it he might have to retract less..(Waves to Charlie)

Dawg, I know enough about what Treasure and Firm believe because they openly state that they are Christians ... and I have debated them on religious and scientific topics over the past 2 1/2 years. I am pretty confident I got the big stuff right.

Really???

Care to show even one thread where either Firm or I debated you on a religious topic?

I know for a fact that in the four years I have been here, I have only labeled myself a Christian in these forums a couple of times.  In neither case was I engaged in a debate on religion.

Please welcome Sanity to the Center!

Honestly...does prayer REALLY work?  (as losttreasure)

While I have, on rare occasion, stood up for peoples' rights to hold whatever beliefs they wish, defended Christianity against wholesale bias, and selectively shared some of my own personal beliefs (though the above example is about the only time), I do not debate religion.

Firm is even more reluctant than I to discuss religion.

I wouldn't be so confident, if I were you.

Well I can accept that someone has an opinion that is different then mine but I don't have to accept it as valid. If you were to tell me tomorrow that the sky was purple with pink polka dots, I could ask you if you dropped some acid, and if you said no, I could just shrug it off and figure your perception is different than mine. But I don't have to accept it as valid.

And no worries, I like you as a smart ass (I hate the word arse) and I like you perverted and kinky too! ;-)

luckydawg -> RE: Critical Thinking & Logical Deduction Are Becoming Extinct Like The Dinosaur (5/3/2010 6:16:13 PM)

What cat calling (what does that even mean?). If I said anything that is demonstrably untrue I will retreact it.

luckydawg -> RE: Critical Thinking & Logical Deduction Are Becoming Extinct Like The Dinosaur (5/3/2010 6:18:40 PM)

sure Icarys, I thought you might want an answer to your question, so you wouldn't ask such a dumb question in the future.

But you can certainly post whatever, whenever you like. Wouldn't pretend otherwise.

But if you ask a dumb question, expect a facetious response.

Coming from you subtee, this is pretty funny actually. Take a step back and look at it from another perspective.
