Very true. I would, however, argue that "critical thinking" - taking some new event or idea and comparing it to what you already know and believe and attempting to fit it into the group of facts and ideas that you consider valid - is a sort of "short hand" scientific method. It's going "I don't have time to run lengthy experiments on this..." and then either saying "...but it seems to match these known facts and the model of reality that I consider genuine so I'll provisionally accept it as valid until more information comes along" or saying "...but this seriously contradicts what I already consider valid, so I need to investigate and question it and my current worldview and resolve this inconsistency."
 
To go all the way back to the OP, I would agree with you that large segments of society seem to be lacking in critical thinking skills. This might be okay if they were vested in following and believing someone who has excellent critical thinking skills - but more often it seems to be a selection of very loud, very arrogant, very biased idiots.
