domi made the claim that critical thinking skills and religious belief were mutually exclusive.

I gave him examples that refute his assertion.

If you aren't sure what I am quoting, following the links is always helpful.

Firm

Firm there is a far cry from having religious beliefs and believing in God. God is the last bastion. How many scientists believe that Jesus Christ is the son of God? How many believe that the Bible is the word of God.....That is a religion.

A belief in some God, not so much.

At times of stress or when immersed in deep shit I have heard that folks have been known to pray....A there are no atheists in fox holes...Doesn't mean that they have any type of a strong religious conviction.

But the bigger issue hear is that once again your lack of "critical thinking" has allowed you to post sources that refute much of what you hope to prove.

You admittedly didn't even go to college. What do you know about the qualifications of a scientist, true or not, and why should your opinion be considered over someone who is an expert in the field?

Expert in the field of what? Conjecture? I didn't know I needed college to learn that? It's evident in everyday life.

That just takes the misconception to the other extreme.

I'm damn glad cardiologists specialize, and that they are creative about improving cardic treatment and care.

I'm approaching it more from the side of social science.

Freud, for instance, repeatedly states that the only prerequisite to becoming a successful psychoanalyst is a thorough reading of classical literature.

Unfortunately the school of thought built upon his thought seems selectively to neglect this reality.

Same goes for the humanities in general, divided up to all hell, worse than Africa!

Same for music. That's why punk music will never really have a place in the academy. It requires of its performers some adequacy in instrumentation mixed with a degree social consciousness that irrevocably sheltered specialist will likely never achieve.

Further, what makes college the determinant of judging the qualifications of a scientist?

Does a Ph.D. in poetry know more about science than a tradesman?

Why? Who says they are? Those who beat the either or drum? Why can't science reinforce religious belief?

Oh, I don't know...because science is based on what is proveable and faith is just the opposite?

Freud also claimed that not accepting his theories constituted denial, thereby proving them---textbook circular reasoning.

Science is the search for truth..We don't always know the outcome when we begin a study.

No, expert in a field of science. If I want to know something about science, I prefer to listen to the experts. You were laughing because scientists said that some were greater and some were lesser. I think they are better qualified to make that determination than you are. But if you can offer a definition of a scientist that is different than what they themselves use, then let's hear it. I'm all ears.

Then you aren't using your critical thinking skills, domi.

You specifically said:  "There is no way you can possess the ability for critical thinking and then talk about religious beliefs and the impact of God on one's life. The two are not synonymous."

I gave you several links of people who were religious and were scientist, then I gave you a link to an article which says that (as of 1997), 40% of scientist believe in God.

I think this is sufficient to refute that a belief in God/religion is exclusive of the ability to think critically.

It can be argued that the strongest faith remains unshaken even in the face of irrefutable evidence.

This is from Merriam-Webster
1 a : allegiance to duty or a person : loyalty b (1) : fidelity to one's promises (2) : sincerity of intentions
2 a (1) : belief and trust in and loyalty to God (2) : belief in the traditional doctrines of a religion b (1) : firm belief in something [/b]for which there is no proof (2) : complete trust
3 : something that is believed especially with strong conviction; especially : a system of religious belief

Science is not "the search for truth." Science is a an empirical methodology for understanding the physical world via the scientific method.

The search for "truth" is conducted elsewhere.

Appeal to authority is a fallacy of defective induction, where it is argued that a statement is correct because  the statement is made by a person or source that is commonly regarded as authoritative.

"You clearly can be a scientist and have religious beliefs. But I don't think you can be a real scientist in the deepest sense of the word because they are such alien categories of knowledge."

What field would you have to be an expert in to make a comment like this?

MM got it..Why did it fly over your head, braniac?
