I thought that even Colorado couldn't give me a new kind of weather.  I was wrong.

Wednesday night we had a dirty rain.  Instead of finding everything glorious and clean, everything was covered in fine mud.  I've never heard of that...

The meteorologists said that it was due to dust storms kicking dust into the air that then got rained out, but they were none too confident about it.

Wow. Interesting.

What causes purple rain?

The weather formerly known as....

The phrase "dirty rain" reads almost erotic somehow. I doubt I'd find it so, though, if I lived in Colorado and had actually awakened to a film of mud on my world.

Being a fan of weather, I have noticed that the Denver area does get some wacky weather. Almost as wacky as what we get here in Cleveland.

The dust storms might be a possible explanation, but what about that ash cloud from the Iceland volcano that "broke loose and was heading towards the east coast of the US and Canada"? Perhaps that might have been a factor in the "dirty rain". I'm not even gonna try and give the name of that volcano. According to the stories I read about it online, part of the ash cloud 'broke off' and was heading **east** towards the US and Canada. Yup, I even re-read the story 4 or 5 times to be sure I was reading it right. Apparently, the continents have rearranged themselves somehow, since the US and Canada are now *east* of Iceland.....

A "dirty thunderstorm" was mentioned in one of the stories I read. With some really cool accompanying photos. When that volcano errupted, the lava coming out carried/created a static charge. Pictures showed lightning bolts within the shooting lava, steam, and smoke. Way cool.

LadyTeazer, the weatherfolks specifically ruled that out.  I myself couldn't see it wending all the way from the East Coast over here without it dirtying up the US in its path as it went.

We had straight line winds here once, with some fancy name, related to a thunderstorm.

Like a hurricaine, but straight. In five minutes, it was like some giant had taken a machete swipe at the forest. We were all cleaning up trees for a few years afterward.

Never saw or heard of it since, either.

I am holding out for ...slutty rain!

dovie -> RE: We just had a new kind of weather! (5/1/2010 10:23:13 PM)

I've lived in Houston for 4 years and I've learned to prepare for anything. The weather here in Texas is unlike anywhere I've ever lived.

This is the most current clinical data on "dirty rain".....

I thinks the fancy name is "derecho".

Yes, that's it! Thanks!

We get Sahara sand in the rain at least once a year. We had volcano ash on the cars too.

Its more annoying than remarkable

Without a doubt - that is dirty Rain

too funny to me!

JstAnotherSub -> RE: We just had a new kind of weather! (5/2/2010 4:40:22 AM)

dirty rain would freak me out-never heard of it before now....i hope i never get to see it first hand!  did it literally cover the homes and cars and everything in the mist of mud?  that would have been cool to see a video of...

the fancy named straight lined winds are common here during tornado season though.  they will spend days looking at charts and such, trying to decide if it was a tornado or straight line winds.  i never got why it matters, since the damage is the same no matter what.

The name I'm finding is derecho. Although I recall it being referred to as a squall line. I never even found some of the patio furniture after that. And the screen house was history.

sunshinemiss -> RE: We just had a new kind of weather! (5/2/2010 7:35:10 AM)

Derecho means straight ahead in Spanish.

We get yellow dust here. It comes from China, covers No and So. Korea and Japan. [:'(]

In Sicily I hear they get the same stuff from Africa.

I say we plant some trees!

Yeah, I lived in the Bayou City for 10 years, Bellaire & Braes Bayou mostly. The rains can be intense. Impressive when the bayous overflow. And I LOL when I hear someone from, say, Ohio or Michigan piss and moan about heat and humidity.
