Sanity -> UN Puts Iran on Commission for Womens Rights (5/3/2010 4:13:03 AM)

Juan Williams ( a Liberal NPR kind of guy) highlighted this fact recently while guest hosting the O'Reilly Factor (via Newsbusters):

quote:

Another outrage courtesy of our friends at the U.N. Iran has just been selected to sit on the United Nations commission on human, on women's rights. Iran, which requires that women who don't dress modestly enough get stoned or lashed. Iran, which threatens to arrest women with suntans. I guess we shouldn't be shocked. In 2003, Libya was selected to head up the U.N. Human Rights Commission.

What next...

Weird.  The commissions don't actually DO anything, though...

Hopefully, there may be some demonstrations and media flak for Iran because of this.

Sanity -> RE: UN Puts Iran on Commission for Womens Rights (5/3/2010 6:24:41 AM)

Just a waste of our tax money, is it?

Then why do we even have a United Nations Commission on Womens Rights if its just going to be a mockery.

Perhaps an aside: Juan Williams is not a liberal. He is a regular talking head on Fox shows. He provides commentary periodically on NPR and was for a short period host of its "Talk of the Nation," which actually illustrates the balance of NPR in including a "Fox Forum Columnist and Political Contributor," as he is described on his web site.

No, he's pretty far left, like all the other NPR types.

Just being on FOX News doesn't make someone Conservative, look at Geraldine Ferraro for example.

A far left type guest hosting on Bill O'Reilly's show?

Does that make Bill a RINO?

No, no, no, Sanity - this is more inclusionary "good intent...". You know; it's like putting N. Korea on the Security Council.

Consider that maybe MOST of the people running the UN prefer Iran's position regarding woman and would like to see a trend moving more to their position versus the modern 'Western' view of a woman's place in society.

Or perhaps Iran being on the commission is the UN version of having Juan Williams represent the 'conservative view' on NPR to "balance" the commission?

O'Reilly's an Independent.

Oh, that's right.

I keep forgetting how many "Independents" we have these days that sound exactly like conservative Republicans.

Come on, how are we ever supposed to have a meaningful conversation if we can't establish any sort of a meaningful standards.

O'Reilly is an independent. Pat Robertson is a centrist.

How are things out in God's country today?

While its always nice to discuss Idaho's majestic scenery or Bill O, lets try to stay on topic for a change. You can always derail the thread on page ten or twenty one, after the topic has died down some.

What about Womens rights, Iran, and the United Nations.

Sanity -> RE: UN Puts Iran on Commission for Womens Rights (5/3/2010 8:14:03 AM)

quote:

Current legal code in Iran actually defines the sexes as unequal. Men’s rights are codified as superior to women. According to Nobel Peace Laureate Shrin Ebadi, the first women judge in Iran before the 1979 revolution and imposition of the current Islamic law, "The criminal laws adopted after the revolution unfortunately took away a woman's human identity and turned her into a second-class being who is incapable and mentally-deranged." Ebadi laments the fact that in today’s Iran, the “law still considers a woman's life and her testimony worth half a man's.”

Iranian law prescribes lashing as punishment for women judged to be dressing immodestly. Adultery and homosexuality are punishable by stoning under the Islamic legal code in place. As reported by the Washington Post, “Condemned men are buried in sand up to their waists, and women up to their necks, and are pelted with stones until they die or manage to escape.” Stonings have occurred as recently as 2009 even though a moratorium has been in place since 2002.

And in other news the Tin Man found a brain, and became a conservative.

The U.N. should have done this on April 1st, because it is a joke, right?

DCWoody -> RE: UN Puts Iran on Commission for Womens Rights (5/3/2010 9:45:27 AM)

This is not putting Iran in charge of womens rights, it's to try to put pressure on Iran to speed up reforms...which are taking place slowly.

So is it your position that the U.S. does not "run" the U.N.?

How is it a waste of "our tax money"?
Does the U.S. fund the U.N.?

How many people on the commission? The implicit question here is how much of an effect will Iran be.
While I am not a fan of the current situation in Iran I do think it is necessary to include those whose concepts are going to be judged.

DCWoody -> RE: UN Puts Iran on Commission for Womens Rights (5/3/2010 1:01:46 PM)

The UN recieves funding from nations based on the size of their economy, and how developed they are & a few other things...with the most developed nations funding the most.
The US pays 22% of the UNs budget, in one way...this is a lot, in another way...not as much per person as some other developed nations (Japan Germany UK & France are big payers per capita).

I think it's reasonable to say that the UN uses USAican tax money.

A lot of what is thought of as 'the UN' doesn't come from UN funding though, with many UN programs being essentially charities relying on donation.
