You skipped mentioning Edges.  They have a number of events during the month that are tailor made for new folks starting out.

Alex told me last time I was there that he'd have to close soon ... something about San Jose getting complaints so the zoning guys were going heavy on him. I haven't been there since ... is Edges still there over by the airport?

My Master, my playpartner and I went to Edges for a wonderful fireplay class/playlab last night. I believe it was one of their last official events, other than perhaps another clean-up day or two. Most of the things have been packed up. My playpartner and I have been discussing our options for alternate venues. We're all going to a kinky camp-out this weekend, which should be really fun!

Philip, you've been very gracious about the teasing over your spelling! Someone already gave you the link to the SOJ calendar, and I would particularly recommend the EduKink events which are geared for beginners. http://edukink.org/ Many other classes are available for people of all levels, on technique, D/s mindset, hypnosis, and other interesting topics. Munches and classes are a good way to learn and get to know people, but a lot of those who attend are already in relationships. So, I'd suggest working on your profile here at CM as well. I found my Master here, and my playpartner at a local event, although she and I had been friends for a couple of months before I brought up my interest in topping and/or dominanating someone.

grins....I do like it when we all play nicely once in a while

OP,

Your humbleness in this entire thread says so much about you. I think that you will be a fine Dominant, as you already have the grace of a gentleman. Good luck to you!

Wanders!!!!! I LOVE your new photo!

The above is really a shame.  I haven't been there in a bit, but I wasn't aware of the closing.  In fact, I went through My email and saw the mailing regarding memberships.  Perhaps they have set up a new location?  I'll have to give them a call.

Find a literacy programme in your area.

You spelled program incorrectly.

Philip welcome to the boards, you have excellent english, and better deportment than many regulars here.  I am sure with you outlook, charm and gracious demeanor you will do just fine :) Welcome! Hopefully you will continue to post and get to know some of us!

Let me know what you find out. I only visit Edges sporadically, mostly when I have a friend who is interested in testing the scene out in a safe way ... but it's good to know if/when it's still there (and where).

I liked the original location (up past Fremont); then the newer location was good 'cuz it was close (over by Lafayette); and now even closer the location by the airport. Alas ... if anyone knows what will happen ... message me (as I'm not on any mailing lists).

Ciao,
Pompeii

I've threatened the Mexicans we contract to that if they don't speak good English, they'll have to deal with my Spanish.

When the Koreans don't understand my Korean, I start speaking Spanish... like that helps!

Aynne, "programme" is the British English spelling of "program," much like colour/color and realise/realize.

LP and Pompeii, there were zoning and permitting issues, as well as financial difficulties, from what I understand. They and some other local folks are looking into some possible new locations, so I'll update you on the other side if I hear anything definite.

Thanks. Without Edges, the nearest dungeon is, afaik, the Citadel way up in SF. Bummer.

Yes, I know this, that was a bit tongue in cheek, I have live in the UK actually, being a military child, so that was meant to show how linguistics can be challenging. However, the OP has, for someone with the knowledge of dual languages, written very well and I thought the comment (s) were a bit snarky and uncalled for. I was married to an Asian that came here and spoke no English and it is typical of Americans to insult the smallest grammatical "errors" and it irks me. Especially when we generally speak only one, and usually not with perfection. I realise the generalisation. [;)].  I thought I was doing him a favour. Okay I am done now. [:)].

pompeii -> RE: How do i find a slave? (5/7/2010 9:26:18 PM)

The thing that gets me with British English is "in hospital", versus "in the hospital".

I'm not sure why they talk that way but we, in God's own American English, add a "the", and they just don't.

Makes you wonder who makes up these rules ... :)

And yet we talk about being in school. Those dang Brits know we at least have it right with that. *wink

Andalusite -> RE: How do i find a slave? (5/8/2010 8:28:24 AM)

Aynne, I agree that people get way too worked up over it. It's particularly amusing when they make mistakes in their complaint, as in the OP. I'm not into the "u" type of textspeak, and the occasional person is just incoherent. Usually I can figure out what they meant to say, and just respond to that, unless there's a particularly amusing pun in their error. If they are saying boring things and being lazy, I probably won't keep talking with them, even if their spelling and grammar are perfect. If they're interesting, then I give them leeway, especially if they have a learning disability, or English is their second language.

pompeii -> RE: How do i find a slave? (5/8/2010 8:44:29 AM)

So, in summary, what's our collective advice for "finding a slave"?

Is it:
a) Be active at the local munches, visit play spaces, take fetish classes, practice on the pro-subs, etc. ...
b) Maintain a profile & dialog on a fetish site (e.g., collarme, fetlife, bondage.com, etc., maybe even craigslist, which I find most helpful) ...
c) ???

Psssst: What's the "secret" to finding slaves!!!! Inquiring minds wanna know!

Andalusite -> RE: How do i find a slave? (5/8/2010 9:06:00 AM)

Well, I haven't personally set out to find a slave - that's the only orientation I *haven't* been involved with so far! If you open it up to include relationships and casual playpartnerships with people of other orientations, I've found that the first two areas were pretty effective, and I've also had good luck in finding kinky relationship partners through vanilla interests. I try to connect with people as individuals and get to know them before bringing any kink into it, and I feel that makes for a much better connection once it is involved. I encourage women to be open to making the first move, if a man has an interesting profile - so far, anyone who I contacted seemed flattered and happy about it. I used the Web to mostly screen out people who were obviously incompatible - too far away, focused on kinks I'm not at all interested in, etc. If they tried to get into the online BDSM/chat stuff, or were rude and pushy, I ruled them out. If they were boring to talk with online or on the phone, I figured it wouldn't get any better in person. Men who came up with a well-thought-out profile and initial contact with a couple of questions and comments about my profile usually made it easy to have a great conversation. Ones who just e-mailed their profile, or "wanna chat," or some such were screened out, stat. [;)] I preferred profiles with a photo, though not necessarily a face shot, but it wasn't a requirement.
