I have done corset training on men but on myself, I just make my corset as tight as comfortably possible.

what size waist are you at the moment? If you are already a 29.5 inch waist already then you need to go for a corset two sizes smaller than your actual size. If you go straight for a 20" corset now, the lacing will gape far too much and the bones of the corset won't be able to constrict you as much.
Make sure you go for a well cut and nipped waste corset that is properly boned.
You need a friend to get you into it properly. Always work from the middle and never undo the bow at the bottom.

When you buy a corset, they always suggest you go for the next size down than the size you actually are but I would suggest you go for 2 sizes down.
When you put the corset on, do it up as tightly as you can (it should still feel like you can breathe) After about an hour you need to re-tighten it.
I have a very small rib cage and so corsets do effect my lung capacity if I'm not careful. They always say, the bigger your breasts the more easily you will wear one and I believe that to be true. Because of that I tend to go for under-bust corsets because they don't pull quite as tightly round the upper rib cage and concentrate a bit more on the waist line. I would also advise going for a slightly longer fit because no matter how slim you are, when you start pulling in tight, your access skin has to go somewhere and its normally downwards. There is nothing worse than seeing a woman in a corset with obvious muffin roles coming out of the bottom!!

I am a guy, so my ribcage is different, but I still ca go down 3 sizes w/o any problems. Make sure you buy a good comfortable corset with steel boning - it is worth the price. If it is just for looks, than quality won't matter that much.

I think that if its just for looks, then quality is very important. There are some awful corsets out there and the retailers of low cost corsets often don't know how to fit one. If your going to invest in a good corset that stands the test of time, go for a good one from a reputable seller because these people know what they are doing when it comes to a perfect fit.

Well corsets, specially when worn to waist train does squish up your organs and move them about , and that could become a problem after a while. Also becoming faint, may become more of a concern. That's why a lot of women in the south olden days were so faint all the time, I have heard, from being laced to tightly.

It sounds silly but don't drink carbonated drinks when laced. The gas expands your stomach and it really hurts. I tend to wear my corset 4" smaller than my waist but the first couple of times I wore it it was really painful.

I don't have any first hand experience, only second hand, since I have corsetted a number of women through time. A short list of advices are:

  • Get a readymande corset that is 2-4 inches smaller that your current waist size. In your case, you should look for a 26 inches.
  • Go slowly and allow your body to adapt. Start with some hours per day and slowly build up the duration of wear and reduction.
  • Loosen or remove immediately, if you feel any accute pain.
  • Prepare to get a new corset after some months, as you become accustomed to the first corset. You will likely be able to wear a smaller corset and you also know a lot more about how it feels to wear one. The 2nd or 3rd corset should be custom made, if you wear it tight for longer durations.
  • Prepare yourself. Corsetwearing is addictive and also somewhat expensive.

I might remember more advice - after I have sumitted the post.

Remember, this is written by a male that has corsetted, laced and tight-laced women, but doesn't wear them myself.

I highly recommend the Corsets (and the staff) at Stormy Leather.

If you are nowhere near San Francisco, they can mail you the corset.

start with 2-4 inches below your current size and by off the rack, make sure you get a good quality steel boned corest from a reputable seller. I would at this point reccomend a fairly plain styled training corset as a prettier looking one will cost you more and the likelyhood is that you will either decide you dont enjoy wearing corsets (rare but it does happen) or you willo be needing to move to a custom fitted corset after around 12 months.

(Custom makes steel-boned corsets from time to time and has worn corsets as well)

There are two different things being discussed here , corset wearing and waist training/tight lacing . To Asylum first It appears that your wanting to go the training tight lacing  route , if that is so , set small goals , do not think  of huge reduction #s straight away .
You will find a real corset , one made for you VS a off the rack will be far better suited for these needs .
For that your going to need to visit a quality  maker , go in for a measurement and fitting , pick your fabric and style / cut .There are also trainers you can wear close to 24/7 . Kathy Jung for example has been waist training and tight lacing for decades , removing her garments only to bathe .
A real corset does not have plastic stays nor boning , can not be wadded up into a ball , nor does it only cost 19.99 .If your going to be waist training your fist goal  should be 3-4 " reduction at first . This may sound like a small goal BUT if you do not like it now the garment can just be worn and enjoyed .I Have seen the school of thought of getting one that you can cinch 6-8" and just use longer laces .Yes this can be done , but it puts undo stress on the garment and shortens its life span , besides that it is ill fitting .

Research many Corset makers , if they can have you have those multiple measurements  over the phone  that may be ok for your first garment , Ideally going in for the measuring and the fitting  is best .

Now if you just wish to wear a corset once every 6 months or once a year , try an off the rack .

Tuck the laces, never tie them in the front.
