Catholic School uniforms eliminate these kind of issues.

The thing about the American Flag -- is that how you see it depends on your point of view.

You say, "We can't admit to being proud of being Americans in our own country?"

What would someone else say? Also, is that what the kids in questions were saying?

I wonder if these fine upstanding young men were wearing thier flag lapels in the days preceding Cinco de Mayo perhaps they weren't so much patriots as...provocateurs?
Still an overreaction by the principal.

The principal said they could wear the shirts any OTHER day, but Cinco De Mayo Day.
You left that part out.
They can wear the shirts, ANY DAY EXCEPT on Cinco De Mayo.
THAT is the point here.

So.... they wanted to show off that they were "real Americans" by committing an illegal act that is actually punishable under federal law?

Technically it is illegal to wear an American flag and a flag is defined, by law, as: "Anything "by which the average person seeing the same without deliberation may believe the same to represent the flag."

However, the separate issue of the principal trying to avoid a race riot, I can see that as being offensive.

Edit: clarity

<GROAN>
Before commenting on law, you might want to consider law school. Desicrating the American Flag may be un-patriotic and is against Section 1 Title 4 of US Code - but that title provides no PENALTY for the acts described. The supreme court has also ruled (on more than one occasion) that enforcing the law would be a violation of the first amendment to the constitution (which, I can assure you, beats US Code EVERY Time).

Please note that this doesn't depict my personal feelings on how the flag of my country should be treated, but it's hardly illegal. The law is unconstitutional and thus isn't a law - it just hasn't been challenged yet because no one enforces it.

That is absolutely not the point. These students, along with every American should be pissing vinegar.

To that point I will say that one of the students in question was half-Mexican himself.

Why are we giving more recognition to this holiday than the people of mexico?

Because it's a great excuse to drink Tecate and slam shots of tequila.

Im all for tequila and i dont need a special day to slam em down. I am rather tired of having to always worry about how we may "hurt" someone's feelings. All this PC crap is just tiring, and rather moronic.

The school district board does not agree with the school's decision, mike. the students have not been suspended, are already back in school, and are still wearing the same t-shirts. There were more than five students involved in the Live Oak incident. The following is a statement released by the district.

quote:

The district does not concur with the Live Oak High School administration's interpretation of either board or district policy related to these actions.

One student made this comment...

quote:

But to many Mexican-American students at Live Oak, this was a big deal. They say they were offended by the five boys and others for wearing American colors on a Mexican holiday.

"I think they should apologize cause it is a Mexican Heritage Day," Annicia Nunez, a Live Oak High student, said. "We don't deserve to be get disrespected like that. We wouldn't do that on Fourth of July."

Now, if all of mexico doesnt celebrate this day, why is this idea that its a mexican heritage day being pushed?

I think you just hurt my feelings.

Not to worry.  Nothing a few shots of tequila won't cure.

After all, it is Septimo de Mayo.

I fail to see how wearing a shirt with the US flag on it, is being disrespectful of another country. I wonder if the school took down it's flag that day. Wouldn't want anyone to be offended if they saw it flying.

Ya know, I find it incredibly interesting that this is happening when becoming a legal immigrant in this country, one pledges allegiance to the American flag in a room full of other legal immigrants doing the exact same.

Funny enough, parents report that the same school removed the American flag from in front of the building on the 5th and replaced it with the Mexican flag...can we please take away their federal funding now?
