DelightMachine -> Spelling Peeves (4/6/2006 6:13:47 PM)

I bet the most annoying spelling peeve people have on these boards is when someone should be typing "dominant" but writes "dominate."

My other spelling peeve is the misspelling of "definitely" as "definately."

No, it isn't horribly annoying, just annoying in a minor way, and I don't expect everyone to spell perfectly. This is just one misspelled word I see over and over.

Does anyone here see other words that they constantly see misspelled here that are annoying?

KatyLied -> RE: Spelling Peeves (4/6/2006 6:29:07 PM)

What's bad is not only the misspelling, but the fact that many don't even know the difference between dominant and dominate.

Spelling "Clouds" with a 'z'?   Okay, just kidding![:D]

fonyDom4fonysubs -> RE: Spelling Peeves (4/6/2006 6:57:26 PM)

OBVIOUSLY - the absolute worst is "your" for "you're" or vise versa - GHEEZ - I see that all over the place !!!!!

I have fun, though, when I'm chatting with a slave and his fingers start to go all over the keyboard - it usually means he's excited. <g>

I have my own name for typos - "finger farts", or "ff" for short <g>

My favorite one I have seen has been a woman's ad that stated she really liked roll play. I guess she must have one wicked bread fetish! [:D]

spelling really doesn't bother me if i can get the jest of the post.. what really bugs me.. is my laptop types out what letters it wants to when it wants to and I have to go back in and edit my own post... LOL

Tikkiee -> RE: Spelling Peeves (4/6/2006 7:49:56 PM)

The only time it really bothers me is when they slip into slang

r
u
woz
coz

makes me want to slap someone

NakedOnMyChain -> RE: Spelling Peeves (4/6/2006 8:05:55 PM)

I see misspelled words here quite often that irk me.  Nothing too specific.  What really pisses me off is when I encounter them at work (not as error, as ignorance).  Too many teachers have no idea how to spell.

A lot have no idea how to speak either... I went to Grandparents night at my grand "short persons" school and a couple of the teachers were talking (read "lecturing") about reading and art and one of the teachers said "yous guys".... I left.

Level -> RE: Spelling Peeves (4/7/2006 3:29:35 AM)

I'm really not too fond of misspelled words though I am guilty of misspelling things too at times but one thing that can get my goat so to speak and do you ever wonder where that phrase comes from I mean did somebody steal his goat oh well but I really do not like those run-on sentences it's as if the devil himself stole all that person's punctuation and hey maybe it was the devil that stole that other guy's goat.

Actually, even more annoying that the misspelled words is an inability to string words together into sentences, sentences into paragraphs, and be able to state ideas. Just read one profile where he has 8 lines, 12 spelling mistakes, and the only idea that came across clearly was "very well endowed" heheh

No, I do not think teachers are to blame .. rather *the system* for a time using whole word recognition rather than phonetics to teach spelling .. for passing kids into the next grade even though they were not ready because not to meant that they would lose self-esteem by not being with their peer group .. and also to a general complacency on the part of the parents that the system would educate their children. And finally to the children themselves for getting away with mediocre work.

Yes there are learning disabilities yet there are always ways around. Personally I am dyslexic so cannot write well .. but gosh can I type!! My child is special needs, and I work with him .. so that he can communicate in writing and in speech effectively.

OK .. about all for now,
Enjoy the day,

I agree Dominant is in the lead followed closely by Slr, Mater, and the annoyances of u, r, y and ur.. I propose that all subs (and Doms where it applies) must own a copy of Hooked On Phonics    chuckles

<drops to a curtsey> and grinz at the 'Z' usage!

*laughs*

Have a good day y'all!

There, their, they're---your, you're---

the worst part is I overlook it in someone with writings  I like and it irritates Me major in someone who has writings I can't abide----gawd I hate being human--but that is My goal this year, to see beyond the spelling to the content of the idea--

MsIncognito -> RE: Spelling Peeves (4/7/2006 8:20:31 AM)

It always causes an eyeball roll for me when someone says "jest" when they mean "gist." Unless the poster is making a joke there is no jest in a post, but you can still get the gist [;)]

Joking aside, I tend to agree with true that as long as I can figure out what the person is saying without it taking much effort then typos don't bother me. I'm sure I make errors without realizing it and in spite of the fact that I know the proper usage for words such as your, you're, its, it's, there, their, they're, etc. I think faster than I type and rarely go back and double check my stream of consciousness-type postings and sometimes those kinds of errors slip through. I don't worry myself too much with it.  The only thing that I find really distasteful is the whole B/bdsm I/is S/so I/important T/that I/i M/must B/butcher T/the E/english L/language T/to P/prove I/i'm A/a T/true L/lifestyler way of typing. Hell, it was painful just typing that.

gooddogbenji -> RE: Spelling Peeves (4/7/2006 8:46:57 AM)

First off, "Hello everyone."

New here, figured I'd add my own 2 cents to the pile of pennies before us.

To me, spelling is not all that important.  Especially they're there their its it's things...  Well, we're a diverse community, and not everyone has their english doctorate.  (I know I don't!)  What really bothers me are two things:

1: An obvious lack of even glancing over the text for legibility.  We all type faster than we think sometimes, but if you don't have time to quickly re-read what you've written, wait until you do before you post.

2: Persons utilizing superfluously elongated words in order to demonstrate their spectacular command of the english language, without taking precautionary measures, examples of which could be, but are not limited to, consulting a thesaurian almanac, a dictionarious literary manuscript, or thinking.

What I want to say is this: We all make mistakes, but at the end of the day, take time to make your post legible to the everyone without being offensive, and people may forgive you're (tee hee) oversights.

Long post, short message.

Yours,

benji
