Before you post on this thread, it would be smart to read the whole article.

Ann Arbor school district looking into legality and principal's actions in black-only field trip

The Ann Arbor school district is investigating the actions - and legality - surrounding a field trip organized exclusively for black students at Dicken Elementary School last week.

Superintendent Todd Roberts said the idea to take 30 black students to hear a special presentation by a black University of Michigan scientist was well-intentioned. But Roberts conceded the execution of that trip and its aftermath might not have been appropriate.

One aspect of the investigation is how Principal Mike Madison handled students who were upset about being excluded, Roberts said Wednesday. Two of Roberts’ top administrators - LeeAnn Dickinson Kelley, the district’s elementary administrator, and Liz Margolis, the district’s communications director - will be at Dicken tonight to hear from parents and offer answers.

Roberts has also asked Dave Comsa, the district’s legal counsel, to determine whether the trip violated state law.

I can see the Principal's intentions were honorable, but not smart. I could have included more, but that would have entailed the entire article. Im seeking comments based upon the legalities of what happened, and the potential political and racial ramifications.

The biggest problem I have with this is that the principal thought only black students could benefit from a speech by a black scientist.

Black kids aren't the only ones exposed to the thug/gangsta or sports star who cheats on his wife stereotypes, and it might have done more good to bring the whole school to see "the scientist" who happened to be black, rather than making a show of "the black scientist" for the black kids.

That being said it's not really something I can get riled up over. Nobody was hurt by this, not for any real definition of 'hurt' and I'd be upset if a well intentioned principal lost his job because the media fuels "protests" against "unacceptable behavior."

lol.. yeah, i thought i posted on that, but seems CM decided to eat some of the posts here.

And i agree, any student, regardless of race, could and would have benefitted from meeting such an amazing man, regardless of his own race. As you pointed out, so many black men are famous or important because of music or sports... its nice to see someone related to the sciences held in such high esteem... any child would have benefited from meeting him.

instead of paying for the school bus, that private donation could have been paid directly to the scientist for a speaking engagement for the whole school.

As far as not hurting someone... you may want to read a bit further into the article.. especially over why the Principal had to send a letter to the parents of the children who did not go.

I'm not sure the field trip is where the stink should lie. They have a school program for at risk/low performing youth, which is exclusively black, and having an administrator chew the kids out who were upset about not being able to go (excuse me... he was "passionate" in his "discussion" with the students) seems problematic too.

Man. Schools are just fucking up all over the place with this racist and politically correct shit, aren't they?

What he said.  Spending resources on low achieving kids is fine.  Limiting those resources to any single ethnic group is wrong.

Nah, They have told the papers that private dollars were used to fund the "field trip."

Seems that if you are on "school time" does it matter that private dollars are utilized?


though their hearts might have been in the right place it's just hard to believe that schools will operate in this manner.

You make a valid point.

A black principal sends a group of black students to meet a black scientist and says he did so to give an advantage to this particular group of students.

Change all the black to white in that previous statement and what would happen?

i did not read the article, but i am prepared to make a call anyhow.  if we want to combat racism in this country, it can not be ok for one race to exclude another one for any reason.

if we want to admit that there are cultural differences, and there are times that it is appropriate to separate due to those differences, it has to go for all the races, not just one.

now...a black rocket scientist, a mexican nba player and and a white boxer who has won many titles walk into a bar.....

thats all i got....

I agree more with the bolded part than the first paragraph.

I really don't care if a bunch of black kids want to hang out with black kids. I don't care if they get a special field trip. I wouldn't care if white kids got one either, though I'd imagine there are a lot of people who do care.

I mean really, when you look at it, what do the white kids have to be jealous of? The black kids got this field trip because they're severely underperforming the white kids and people think they need a special fucking outreach to be able to succeed. These kids basically got told "Hey we want to show you that black people can be scientists so you don't end up a retarded rapper or athlete like we expect you to."

First parent who says "but they should treat my kid the same!" gets a cookie. To the face.

Only thing is he shouldn't have done it during school hours. That makes it a legal liability.

A principal tells his school they're going to see a black rocket scientist. The class gets excited because they've never seen a black rocket before.

When they get there they see he's just a normal scientist with an extra adjective tacked onto his job description. Lawl.
