Now I admit, I hate that people use the bible to spread hate against homosexuals, but I hate even more that other people try to dictate what someone else believes.

Then you hate Christianity.

No, I just hate the ones who get in my face with it. Lucky for me, I haven't run into one of those in years. Now about a month ago, I did have a guy try and lecture me on becoming an athiest at our local college, but we (the group of people I was talking with at the time) chased him off pretty quick.

Well yeah a spot of tolerance would be appreciated......mind you the church is no less accepting than wider society. And I think the church is no longer the centre for learning that it was 300 years ago....so it isn't in a position to make a big impact.

It's no great surprise that someone has told a lie and pretended to be someone he/she is not.

This is what politics amounts to though.......it seems people can't wait for a politician of the opposing party to step out of line so they can then tear them down and link hypocrisy with a particular party.

Politics has probably always been like this.....perhaps people should concentrate on the positives within their own party in order to have candidates who focus on policy and principles rather than spin and petty squabbles.....not sure which comes first....but if people spend their time squabbling.....then politicians will respond and pander to your squabbling to get your vote......which could be why you can't get a straight answer out of them.

In the US, the politics of anti-gay rhetoric, hate speech and legislation is drivin almost entirely by the religious right. However, in a recent CA gay-marriage ballot initiative, we saw the black religious community as well as Mormons join forces with the religious right to defeat it. The religious very much drive the social and moral agenda in this country. Although society is becoming more secular with each subsequent generation, the religious right is still a very powerful voting block and lobby that insists this country should be a Christian nation with Christian morals and values.

Maybe conservative values are the only place where deregulation actually works!

Just sit back, relax, and watch the religious right demonstrate, again and again and again, its own pathology.

I would be happy to sit back and watch if their pathology wasn't so "in my face."

Rich, wouldn't a better alternative be if the Church and bible thumpers would stop teaching that homosexuality is a sin? Besides being theologically incorrect, this teaching perpetuates the ignorant stereotypes and guilt that causes one to want to commit suicide to begin with. Homosexuals and transgenders struggle with their sexuality because they live in a society that tells them that they have something to be ashamed of. It seems to me like you have it backwards.

Sure, Brainia, if one is interested in living in a world where somebody else gets to tell churches what they can and cannot preach, and what families can and cannot believe.

I like that pic better than the boobs. For a totalitarian, you're pretty hot.

Come on Heri,

Aren't we all on the same side of the fence on this one? If they would lay off of the homos wouldn't the world be a happier place?

Did Jesus preach hate the homos?

But the beauty of the whole thing is that while so many are preaching "hate the homos," they are simultaneously enjoying a nice reach around.

Actually, if the folks in CA had been paying more attention to the ones on the left, they might not have lost that gay marriage vote.  They sure didn't seem to see that one coming. Tunnel vision will do that to ya.

Yes Heri, since when was being an intellectual or taking the anti ideology/dogma position tantamount to being a totalitarian? The Enlightenment and Renaissance were hardly totalitarian movements. Is it not possible to be both hot and anti ignorance? Or maybe you like the type who can carry a Bible in their tremendous cleavage.

When you start trying to tell other people what they are not allowed to believe, Brainia.

Around my place, boobs that can hold a big book are much more likely to get used as a winerack.

Fair enough BraniacSub....but does intolerance necessarily follow Christianity?

I don't think so. And though this country is secular...English values remain christian values.

As an example....the rule of law is based on christian values....and the very essence of the rule of law is tolerance.....perhaps the people you talk of are an extreme or distorted version of christianity.

I think your reaction is pretty common. Imagine if you had lived the life that generated that rage.
I am old enough to remember seperate but equal as an adult.
I was at Oxford Miss.
When MLK was alive many people reacted to his verbage in the exact same way.
In the 1 1/2 minutes that you could put up with did you hear him say anything that was untrue?

Well it looks like neither one of us is going to hear an answer on that front.

Reverend Wright has a pretty big footprint on utube. Go watch them and if you feel he is lying in any of them tell me and we can discuss it.

Yea, ok, I did it. Lasted about 1 1/2 minutes into the video before I had to shut it off. Sorry but life is too short to waste time listening to someone ranting like that. He might be making some really good points, but it is lost in all the hate and anger he is projecting. Now I am going to have to go listen to some Simon and Garfunkel to get that out of my head.

Rev. Wrong has that effect, doesn't he?

I am not trying to tell others what to believe. I am speaking out against ignorance, hate and intolerance, and where the church is complicit and complacent, I have no problems calling a spade a spade.

Enjoy your pinot.

Can one have Christianity without intolerance? Sure.

Would there be intolerance if not for Christianity? No. Not the kind we are discussing in this thread.

And yes, the political right in this country consists primarily of those who share an extreme literal interpretation of the Bible.

I wonder if homosexuality is actually stronger in the religious community than in the secular...

I've not seen any evidence to support that. It's not their numbers that's newsworthy, it's the hypocricy.

I disagree with both comments.

There are God knows how many people that have no interest in religion, much less Christianity, but are homophobic, especially males. They exhibit that intolerance.

I also have doubts about just what percent of the right that has such a "extreme literal" view of the Bible; I think that those types get an inordinate amount of press, making them seem more than they are. This doesn't mean there aren't a lot of them around, there are.

Probably more of them are hypocrites, than true believers. Is that better, or worse?

So sorry, but I don't allow that kind of anger to stay in my head. And no I am not going to subject myself to that again. At least not voluntarily.
