I'm unsure what you mean SM. Are you merely asking if people consider online interactions/forums as bdsm experience?

Basically yes.  For example If you had a online relationship would you consider that as BDSM experience?   There are many other example like reading, going to munches.... chatting online responding to forums..ect...

Fast reply because I am lazy like that hehe
I consider my experience as coming from actual real events..... if I haven't done it, even if I have read up on it extensively then I consider it a curiosity

Some people are sure to count their on-line  relationships as real experience. It all depends what the on-line relationship or single cyber encounter is all about.

Watching movies, reading up and doing research might be a learning curb, but doing real time tasks and reporting back are as real as anything whether inspired by an online contact or a 'real' person

i suppose it depends on whether youre out there putting theory into practice and gaining actual experience along the way.  as opposed to just gaining theoretical experience by proxy on the net.

my experience of Ds and Ms has been peppered by real life and on-line learning, both have gone together in helping me to get to grips with how it all works for me physically, mentally, emotionally and psychologically.

theres stuff id never have known about myself without real life experience and theres stuff id have never worked out for myself without help from these boards, so for me anyway, id say its a bit of both.

When your referring to your experience level do you include the time you spent on the net on sites like this? Does time spent reading about it, or the online thing. Would you consider that a "experience factor"?

I'm not looking for the online vs RL debate. I was thinking more along the line of going to collage to be whatever after your in the work environment now you can say I have this much "actual experience" So the time "spent in school" is that "experience?

BadOne
Sorry SB,  lost my "train" of thought.
Realtime....using  ALL 5 senses.  If I were to engage in an online relationship, I would categorize that as not being real, and just filling up empty time.

I met a gentleman who professed to have done this stuff for 6-7 yrs. He came to one of our munches when I first started running them a decade ago. He literally believed that since most of my female members were not wearing a physical collar that we were therefore available for the plucking and started behaving inappropriately. We soon stopped that action in its tracks by getting up and surrounding him and then ..err, showing him the error of his ways.
He was very quiet after that, but did admit to me later that he became a master online and had never met anyone who really did this stuff before except on IRC.

Since then I have met more people who had been in online relationships for years and while the behavior was not as extreme as the first guy, they did have some odd ideas about how a real life encounter might go.

Online doesn't have a chance to touch on the day to day "normal times". I suspect that is what makes them appear to last longer.

I want to add that I don't see online as "fake", because I think it's all very real to those who are participating---but it's akin to playing guitar on Guitar Hero and actually picking up a Fender. NOT THE SAME, and the "experience" really doesn't transfer.

No - there was no public internet back then.

I was more apt to burn one up while listening to traffic, watching the static on tv. Good times

Hell it's all a learning experience.

Personally I don't count the time I spent observing from the outside.  And I separate the time I spent actually being mentored in SM from my actual experience.  And more recently I add a different category all together.

So, I spent 6 months 2-3 hours a day 4-5 times a week being mentored.
I have been involved in the general BDSM culture in various locations, with varying experiences for the past 12 years.
And I've been involved in the Gay Leather culture for 2 years now.

Interestingly, for all it's own problems, the Gay Leather culture has been far more rewarding than the general BDSM communities I've been a part of.
