ORIGINAL: CarrieO If this power the OP says women have is innate or natural, would it only be available to those who posses beauty according to society's standards or is it something all women have, regardless of appearance? I always thought power came from within. On some level, I believe society does have a role to play in defining beauty, though it does not outright dictate it. It's my understanding that we have an innate appreciation for physical symmetry and proportion. I recall a study concluding that babies stare longer at attractive faces, and even had innate musical taste. Nancy Etcoff I'm told speaks about this at length in Her book Survival of the Prettiest. A very good book, actually. It was your post HERE and Peon's post about 'plastic pretty' that caught my interest in regards to society and the image of beauty. That said, your ending point is something to consider, and reminds me of Peon's earlier warning about the "Goddess" complex; power and seduction takes brains. Beauty without a doubt lends tremendous advantage to those who possess it, but it is a finite advantage if its possessor has a room-temperature IQ. At this juncture, we really need to discuss what's on the inside of the successful femme fatale as well—though I suspect that may be an even more contentious subject matter. You're right...beauty only gets a girl so far in life. Which is where I was going when I posted THIS thread on feminine wiles and dominance. Beauty, brains, charm...some innate and some learned behavior...I don't have a blanket answer for what makes a successful femme fatale. I also don't believe there is only one answer. I agree, though, it would be great to discuss what is 'natural power' for a woman and who defines it.
