The British Home Office denies Iranian LGBT rights activist and documentarian Kiana Firouz's request for asylum. If deported, she faces 300 lashes and public hanging for unrepentant homosexuality. MAKE SOME NOISE ABOUT THIS PEOPLE. Copy this and repost.

Save the Life of Kiana Firouz

I know that 300 lashes may appeal to some but I think you will agree that for being gay, this should not happen.

belladevine -> RE: Save the Life of Kiana Firouz (5/13/2010 4:09:08 PM)

I am a Human Rights activist. I am currently on a warned suspension for saying things on COLLARME that are religiously(politically) incorrect.

I am sympathetic to gay people and support everybodys right to Human Integrity and freedom of choice.

I do not fully understand why Britan would deny assylum but.......

If the Iranian people do not defend the rights of their own people then I really don't care about Iranians either.

Here in America Human rights violations are rampant. WE ALL HAVE SERIOUS PROBLEMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RELIGION IS AN EVIL PLAGUE UPON THIS BEAUTIFUL PLANET.

TheHeretic -> RE: Save the Life of Kiana Firouz (5/13/2010 6:15:48 PM)

I keep waiting for a hell of a lot of people who ought to care about this kind of thing to wake the fuck up and start making the kind of noise they so love to make.

I must still love the left a little bit, because it makes me sad every time they don't.

Maybe you should spend more time worrying about your own response to it and less time expending energy on trying to turn everything into a partisan issue.

TheHeretic -> RE: Save the Life of Kiana Firouz (5/13/2010 6:50:25 PM)

Partisan?!?!?! I know fucking well why the fundy right isn't going to climb up on this. Why don't you explain to me why the left isn't? Aren't women's rights, gay rights, freedom of artistic expression, and opposition to the death penalty supposed to be things they care about?

You seem to be missing the point, so I'll try again and I'll type slower to help you out.

This is not a left vs.right issue, but for some reason you are insistent on turning it into one.

TheHeretic -> RE: Save the Life of Kiana Firouz (5/13/2010 8:04:52 PM)

Why don't the people who claim to care about those values give a shit about these events, RML?

Answer the fucking question.

dcnovice -> RE: Save the Life of Kiana Firouz (5/13/2010 8:35:36 PM)

Well, I've written to the ambassador and posted the link on my Facebook page. Need to think about what else I can do.

Eta: Also sent the story link to the local LGBT paper.

Which people? What are their names? And why do you assume they don't?

Why do you spend so much time and energy constantly creating these fantasy scenarios where you're completely convinced that people with whom you disagree are doing dishonorable and hypocritical things, even though you have no evidence that they are? This is a constant theme with you. You look at a situation, assume that "liberals" must be responding to it in a certain fashion (or, often as not, that they are going to respond in a certain fashion as soon as they get around to it), and then you attack them for it. I don't understand why you get so much satisfaction out of creating imaginary reasons to not like people.

Maybe because we're busy with a million other things, and didn't even know about this individual until opening this thread.

Too much news can be nauseating and counterproductive. I personally dip in and out.

Because that's why I left the left, Panda. These are the values I was raised on, and the values I once believed I shared with them. They're the kind of values I have joined them on the streets and at the ballot box in support of. I know all too well the kind of noise that can be generated when they are moved. It isn't hopeless. There are shining lights, sometimes many, but never that whole horizon glow, however dim, that says, "we know, and we care."

I don't expect marches in the street, or people out gathering signatures, Panda. It's not like the human rights condition is comparable to aparteid or anything. Just ... for more people to care. Maybe for women's rights awareness to be a ribbon thing with the screen actors guild. Maybe a fundraiser that gets good coverage in the gossip pages. Maybe for people finding this in their local indie paper, rather than emailing it to them.

I sent my emails to my own elected reps. The State Dept. should help her find asylum somewhere if the UK won''t grant it. A prompt form reply regarding the difficulties of immigration reform has already come back. DC perhaps, is qualified to send a note to the ambassador. I'm just not that diplomatic, sometimes.

Try not to take it personally, Panda. I'm cussing at old friends and relatives here.

LadyEllen -> RE: Save the Life of Kiana Firouz (5/15/2010 4:27:50 AM)

By way of coincidence the new UK Home Secretary (who is in charge of immigration) is Teresa May, who is also the new minister for womens' affairs too.

Aside from having terrible dress style, awful preference in shoes and being in need of a decent hairdresser, Ms May is therefore ideally placed to deal with this case.

If her mailbox as an MP [email protected] were to be filled with polite and well worded messages about this case and the need to review the decision of the previous Labour government..............

I for one applaud the British Government's stance.

We have to move away from this idea that Britain should step in and save the world. It's a terrible affliction of the English that we're arrogant enough to assume we are the saviours......and this is a problem that goes right back to the days of Empire....and may be bound up in the post-imperial malaise....and the need to feel important as a nation. It's the reason we're in places such as Iraq and Afghanistan....trying to make the world a better place.

You have a principle or you do not.....no use in suggesting that Britain should step in when it suits.....and leave people alone at other times. It's a deep maliase in the English psyche that we think we can push our values onto other people. It's time to sort out the business of this country and leave other people to sort out their business. Iran is nothing to do with us....it's thousands of miles away for crying out loud.....keep out of the Middle East and by extension keep out of their business and their people's lives....instead of affording sanctuary to every waif and stray....because then it's only a short step in logic to cheating ourselves into thinking we're do people a favour by changing a country and its values....when really it's tantamount to acting as the world's nanny out of a Mothering instinct which serves only the Mother.

It's all or nothing I'm afraid....and it's got to be nothing.

And yes.....for being gay it should not happen.....but it does not follow that it's our business to prevent it from happening.

LadyEllen -> RE: Save the Life of Kiana Firouz (5/15/2010 12:02:19 PM)

If we wont deport convicted criminals and even "terrorists" for fear they might be maltreated when they get home, then we shouldnt even be considering returning this woman to Iran.

Call it what you will.
