What do you sound like? Do you think you sound like you look?

Kim Kardashian whatever her name is, is beautiful, voluptuous, many folks’ wet dream, apparently, but I don’t know how anyone could take her for more than 5 minutes…unless she was gagged. To me she sounds nasal, grating, whiny even when she’s not whining.

Have you ever thought about how you sound? Have you ever tried to modify it to be more pleasing? Or to get rid of a regional/national accent?

LOL. Your post reminded me of a nurse I used to work with. She was a short, kinda chubby, but very pretty girl who sounded like she was breathing in helium. lol. You'd never expect a sound like that to come out of her mouth.

As far as my voice goes, I would guess it sounds fairly friendly. I am in sales and customer service and do well in both.

She's the opposite of "nice face for radio" - nice voice for modeling!

LOLOL, sub...she had the kind of voice that would make you do a double take. I used to like to watch the people who were talking to her for the first time to catch their expression. It was priceless.

Do you think she realized she sounded like that? It seems intuitive to me for one to know what one sounds like, but if they knew...why would they sound like that?

I'm not sure. I remember the first time I ever heard her, I focused more on the sound of her voice than what she was telling me and had to ask her to repeat herself. I commented on her voice and people chuckled and nodded and said..."thats our Mary". It became something everyone just took for granted I suppose (like those incredibly eccentric people you just seem to "forgive" and move on with? She was a damn good nurse, the Dr's took her word serious voice wise. She must have known she sounded like a squeaking duck. Ya know, now that you ask the question, I can remember ugly people, super fat people, that while as an individual were spectacles, but basically, in a functioning capacity, their flaws were overlooked. Its an interesting concept now that I think of it. Thanks!! :)

I know how I sound like since as a kid my cousin did a cassette tape with my brother and me for my parents for christmas....at that time I figured out that the voice I hear is not how others hear my voice....however, I am fine with my voice and in my opinion it is congruent with me (though I know that at times guys expected my voice to be higher than it is).

I never tried to modify my voice and certainly not to be more pleasing. I am me, either people like it or not and to the frustration from my parents I always was like that.

Last but not least I would never aim to get rid of a national or regional accent, because quite frankly, why should I?

I am me and I enjoy the regional accent I do have back home and over here in england I have no desire to get rid of my national accent because why would I want to hide where I am from? I am German and have no problem with it so I don't see any reason to hide it...I don't want to be anyone else or any other nationality, I am me, not more and not less.

Thats not what I think, thats what my personal experience is. It might not be for everyone like that but when I talk I hear the voice different as when I would tape it and then listen to it...just record your voice with a tape recorder and check it yourself....not rocket science.

Apart from that I think that this is one of the reasons why some people don't realise how awful they sing when they appear on shows where they sing. Of course, some people go for it anyway to seek the attention, however, some people I think don't realise that they sound differently to other people then to how they hear themselves. just my view.

I think it's true that we hear ourselves differently than others hear us. I'm also aware that my voice has a tendency to differ somewhat dependent on my mood.

I've never tried to modify my voice, but I have modified my vocabulary to edit out regional slang which I find distasteful.

I hate my voice. I do not think I sound like I look.

I have a deep voice, but because of allergies I often sound like i have a cold....

But no worries, it doesn't bother me like it used to....at least I am not whiny, screechy, or squeaky

When I was 19 I moved into a city about 50 mins away from my parents...over there I picked up some of their vocabulary because I liked it...some particular words were just cute...and when I used them back home when visiting my parents my mum used to say " (repeating the word I was saying) followed by what???" She was always amused about when I implemented some of their words into our dialect and as she was living there as well at a time loooooooooooong before I was born it brought back memories to her to hear certain words again. By now I don't remember those anymore...but I think I only adapted them into my vocabulary at that time as I enjoyed being there and it is still the part in Germany where I feel most at home...even when I worked and lived there only for 2 years.

No, we don't hear ourselves in our head the same way others hear us. I remember as a kid playing with a tape recorder and being shocked about that. Now, because of answering machines and such, I am used to it.

I don't love my voice, it sounds flat to me. But I get compliments on it quite often so it must not be as bad as I think it is. Some even think my voice is sexy but.....whatever. It's pretty mid range, maybe even a bit lower, in tone. I don't really have an accent persay. Apparently the midwest is the most accentless part of the country.

I do get lazy and easily pick up accents from others. If I am spending time with southerners........yep, guaranteeeeed I will be talking just like them in no time.

How you breath can and does affect the sound of a persons voice. Pull from the diaphragm and it will sound much better.

I have a tendency to pick up words from places I visit, or even from people I communicate with which please me. I worked very hard at dropping some words I was raised with which struck me as too "hillbilly". I must admit, though, that one phone conversation with a relative brings my drawl back to the surface.

I've heard this too. Maybe this is why I love accents, being all accentless myself.

I really thought this thread was going to say you were hearing voices subtee! I think my voice is odd personally, but other people compliment me on it, so maybe it's not. I think what LaT said is true, most people think their voice sounds different than we hear it.
