ORIGINAL: Sanity The Tea Party is bringing Moderates and even some Liberals on board. There are a lot more fiscal conservatives all through the spectrum than hardcore Democrats are willing to admit and if the Republicans move right fiscally (which they seem to be doing) it will easily spell disaster for the Dems. We've played this game before. The bulk of the Tea Party and the bulk of their influence is among Republicans, with a token indie or dem here and there. I asked for specific examples otherwise--you came up with...one. That there are plenty of fiscally conservative Democrats is hardly a secret--we even call them Blue Dogs, and there are, what, something like 50 of them in the House now? As far as fiscally conservative Republicans, it's all talk--still yammering about the "magic tax cut theory" which continually accrues greater deficits. Until both sides talk seriously about taxes and spending, recognizing that taxes will be necessary to help clear out this mess, understanding that reigning in spending means identifying major areas, not nitpicking, such as defense, and selling the public on cutting the program. At least so far, Republicans will never go for it, and I don't see Teas talking about it either. It will be more of the same. My problem with the Teas is the sheer naivety. Clean house, vote down bills, and all will be well. If only! Governance is far more complicated than that, and simplistic head in the sand approaches will only make things even worse than the magic tax cut theory does. Additionally, there's this fantasy that a new group sent to Washington will do everything differently, their lily white souls forever untouched by the alure of power and the benefits of cooperating with the established machine. It's a fairy tale--Mr. Tea goes to Washington. Reality is, things get done when different factions cooperate and negotiate. Until people re-awaken to that basic reality, we'll continue to have a mess, and Tea will only change the color of the mud.
