popeye,

So far, the effect is just as others predicted, that the Teas will push Republicans even further to the right.

It's still Republicans voting for Republicans--just more conservative (and less experienced) ones.

DomYngBlk -> RE: Newt Gingrich forecasts Obama loss (5/19/2010 6:31:40 AM)

Which makes it a great day for Democrat!

Sanity -> RE: Newt Gingrich forecasts Obama loss (5/19/2010 6:33:29 AM)

You're mistaken.

The Tea Party is bringing Moderates and even some Liberals on board. There are a lot more fiscal conservatives all through the spectrum than hardcore Democrats are willing to admit and if the Republicans move right fiscally (which they seem to be doing) it will easily spell disaster for the Dems.

Obama's turning his base off, too - in droves. He's a big dud from almost everyone's standpoint.

Dunno.  If the GOP can pull that off, they will have gone from the party of insane fiscal profligacy to the party of fiscal discipline.  With the Bush legacy still fresh and the Clinton legacy of relative fiscal discipline, there's no reason whatsoever that the Dems cannot become branded as disciplined as well.

Sanity -> RE: Newt Gingrich forecasts Obama loss (5/19/2010 6:42:47 AM)

They could, but they won't. They're going around all wild eyed, screaming "RACIST TEABAGGERS" if anyone mentions budget cuts, and theres all kinds of white foam spilling out from around their mouths.

mnottertail -> RE: Newt Gingrich forecasts Obama loss (5/19/2010 6:45:41 AM)

Yes, I have been scouring the earth for their budget cut proposals to the defense budget especially.....the racist teabaggers are going to foam at their white mouths over that, huh, Tom?

It will be interesting to watch him deal with his own hypocrisy since he was rabid about the impeachment of President Clinton because of Monica Lewinsky while having an affair with a staffer and he was forced to leave the house due to ethics problems.

It's also interesting to see how many other Republicans that loudly denounced Clinton ended up proving themselves hypocrites.

Burton, Ensign, Craig, to name a few.

We've played this game before.

The bulk of the Tea Party and the bulk of their influence is among Republicans, with a token indie or dem here and there. I asked for specific examples otherwise--you came up with...one.

That there are plenty of fiscally conservative Democrats is hardly a secret--we even call them Blue Dogs, and there are, what, something like 50 of them in the House now?

As far as fiscally conservative Republicans, it's all talk--still yammering about the "magic tax cut theory" which continually accrues greater deficits. Until both sides talk seriously about taxes and spending, recognizing that taxes will be necessary to help clear out this mess, understanding that reigning in spending means identifying major areas, not nitpicking, such as defense, and selling the public on cutting the program. At least so far, Republicans will never go for it, and I don't see Teas talking about it either. It will be more of the same.

My problem with the Teas is the sheer naivety. Clean house, vote down bills, and all will be well. If only! Governance is far more complicated than that, and simplistic head in the sand approaches will only make things even worse than the magic tax cut theory does.

Additionally, there's this fantasy that a new group sent to Washington will do everything differently, their lily white souls forever untouched by the alure of power and the benefits of cooperating with the established machine. It's a fairy tale--Mr. Tea goes to Washington.

Reality is, things get done when different factions cooperate and negotiate. Until people re-awaken to that basic reality, we'll continue to have a mess, and Tea will only change the color of the mud.

Especially if it's about reigning in defense spending.

I remember that thread, you specifically asked for one example. Now thats not good enough... could this be yet another case of your ever moving goal posts?  [:D]

Musicmystery -> RE: Newt Gingrich forecasts Obama loss (5/19/2010 7:50:53 AM)

Put the goal posts anywhere you wish.

The reality of the point doesn't change.

Sanity -> RE: Newt Gingrich forecasts Obama loss (5/19/2010 11:29:25 AM)

The reality is that the Tea Party won't support most Dems because most Dems are happy to spend us into oblivion. And while the Dems will undoubtedly stay the course due to their addiction to outrageous deficit spending, I have the audacity to hope that the Republicans will change.

Not just any change mind you - but change we can really believe in.

Musicmystery -> RE: Newt Gingrich forecasts Obama loss (5/19/2010 12:26:27 PM)

I was just listening to Rand Paul on NPR on my way home. He doesn't trust Republicans with fiscal responsibility, saying, "When Republicans were in charge, they doubled the deficit."

That's why the Teas supported him.

Sanity -> RE: Newt Gingrich forecasts Obama loss (5/19/2010 3:50:09 PM)

There is a trust issue, the Repubs behaved a lot like Democrats for a time, I'll give you that.

willbeurdaddy -> RE: Newt Gingrich forecasts Obama loss (5/19/2010 11:32:20 PM)

Odd that in the railing against husbands cheating on their wives who have cancer that John Edwards had never come up. I guess the fact that he lied his way through the primaries, and had he not Obama would likely not be President, excuses him from that taint. Or maybe its just because hes a libewal.

This I've got to hear. How precisely did you arrive at that conclusion? Hard data please.

Maybe he stole those figures from Dick Morris. Morris said that the Dems will lose both the house and the senate in November and after last night's elections it looks like we're headed down that road. And they said that the Tea Partiers (Brain's buddies) are starting to have a big effect!

Are you sure you meant last nights elections? The one where more votes were cast in the Democratic primaries than in the GOP? The one where the blowout GOP primary winner in in KY received less votes than the guy who lost the Democratic primary?

See you in November.

SilverMark -> RE: Newt Gingrich forecasts Obama loss (5/20/2010 4:00:22 AM)

Hmmm....Good Old Newt....lol...My residence is in his old district, the one he left and only comes back to hold his professorship in...if the Tea Baggers wish to cleanse Washington of "insiders" then why would they ever support him?
Newt in actuallity is probably the second least electable of the possible Rebuplicans....the wicked witch of the North being the most un-electable. I hope they both run, hell, for my money have them all run! John Paul, Sarah, Newt, Mit, et al....let's see just how far off the map they push the Republican party....and they will!

Sanity -> RE: Newt Gingrich forecasts Obama loss (5/20/2010 4:13:28 AM)

Since Barack Obama could have close affiliations with his racist church and with the domestic terrorists who got him started in politics and win, and if Bill Clinton could get away with selling missile technology to the Chinese and his rape allegations and win, I seriously doubt that anyone is really "unelectable" these days.
