This is entirely possible, however the motivation could be just the opposite. 

If she's just barely grown up, it may be that she needs time to be a mature adult for a while... be responsible for herself.   I've yet to see a young adult not look forward to and relish their new-found independence when they become an adult.

She may be railing against a new "parent" when she just finally got away from the old.

Sounds like she may only be interested in the play aspect, not the D/s aspect.  She may be a bottom calling herself a submissive.  Sounds like a mismatch if you are looking for a masochist who is also submissive.  Ive made this mistake before, thinking a woman was submissive, only to find out that all she was interested in was the play.  For me it's the D/s that is a turn on.  Play is the icing on the cake and I dont care for one without the other.

I am sometimes a bit stubborn, I have had a habit of topping from the bottom, which is not something I am proud of, and is something I am learning to change.  It's difficult to give up all control and put it in someone else's hands.  It's a very hard thing to get used to, but this is something I deeply desire, and truly need, for that matter.
