ORIGINAL: UtopianRanger quote:
Are the people that like Ron Paul's views on the war or some of his other liberatarian ideas aware that he is a hardcore social conservative? He's anti-abortion rights (and in fact wants to repeal all rulings that support abortion rights at the federal level), supports an amendment to the Constitution banning gay marriage, voted to prevent gay couples from adopting children, and all kinds of other things that seem like they would rub the stereotypical CollarMe-ite the wrong way. I'm not arguing against him...I like a lot of his ideas. I'm just a little surprised to see someone who is so far to the right on social issues getting support among the CollarMe faithful. Pollux.... Since I'm not one to pull any punches here.... I'll just say that the whole ''gay marriage'' issue is actually non-issue for me - It doesn't make any difference to me whether they are allowed to marry or not. As far abortion.... as long as Paul doesn't exhibit a demeanor similar to Gary Bauer, I’m not really worried about his anti-abortion position. I don't think the pro-abortion rights crowd would distinguish the two based on their demeanor, though I agree with Paul that returning the issue to the states certainly seems like the right thing to do constitutionally, and there's a serious moral argument there, but for some reason I have a little nagging reservation that keeps me from getting behind it fully. Maybe it's exactly the thought that I'd be associated with Bauer & Co. Maybe it's the fact I know people who've had up close & personal experience with the issue, and I can't bring myself to believe they did the wrong thing. I'm very conflicted about it. quote:
What trumps {for me} the few small negatives regards social issues, is his position on taxes, national sovereignty and limited government. I just can't emphasize enough how important those three issues are to our whole country - They don't affect just limited segments of the population, they affect everyone. As I said in a previous post, I have zero desire to become part of or live in a unipolar world. Your desires notwithstanding, it seems like we're living in one anyway That's actually not too far off from my own politics (in fact it's straight up identical), except for one thing: I'm 180 degrees out with Paul and the libertarians on foreign policy. On that, I'm firmly in the Niall Ferguson camp.
