Someone back there said Ron Paul.

Are the people that like Ron Paul's views on the war or some of his other liberatarian ideas aware that he is a hardcore social conservative?  He's anti-abortion rights (and in fact wants to repeal all rulings that support abortion rights at the federal level), supports an amendment to the Constitution banning gay marriage, voted to prevent gay couples from adopting children, and all kinds of other things that seem like they would rub the stereotypical CollarMe-ite the wrong way.

I'm not arguing against him...I like a lot of his ideas.  I'm just a little surprised to see someone who is so far to the right on social issues getting support among the CollarMe faithful.

Ron Paul waxes smarter than most Republicans, but in terms of voting record, he plays along like any "good communist" or party apparatchnik. For this reason, I find his views rather hollow, because he does not back them up.

Pollux....

Since I'm not one to pull any punches here.... I'll just say that the whole ''gay marriage'' issue is actually non-issue for me - It doesn't make any difference to me whether they are allowed to marry or not.

As far abortion.... as long as Paul doesn't exhibit a demeanor similar to Gary Bauer, I’m not really worried about his anti-abortion position.

What trumps {for me} the few small negatives regards social issues, is his position on taxes, national sovereignty and limited government. I just can't emphasize enough how important those three issues are to our whole country - They don't affect just limited segments of the population, they affect everyone. As I said in a previous post, I have zero desire to become part of or live in a unipolar world.

I don't think the pro-abortion rights crowd would distinguish the two based on their demeanor, though    I agree with Paul that returning the issue to the states certainly seems like the right thing to do constitutionally, and there's a serious moral argument there, but for some reason I have a little nagging reservation that keeps me from getting behind it fully.  Maybe it's exactly the thought that I'd be associated with Bauer & Co.  Maybe it's the fact I know people who've had up close & personal experience with the issue, and I can't bring myself to believe they did the wrong thing.  I'm very conflicted about it.

Your desires notwithstanding, it seems like we're living in one anyway

That's actually not too far off from my own politics (in fact it's straight up identical), except for one thing: I'm 180 degrees out with Paul and the libertarians on foreign policy.  On that, I'm firmly in the Niall Ferguson camp.

Great ticket, but it would never happen, McCain has too many damned good but unpopular with the media and political bosses ideas.

That exactly what I’m talking about though. While Paul is definitely an opponent of abortion, he hasn’t been overcome by such a draconian, fundamentalist mindset like Bush and Bauer, who would act unilaterally by trying to manipulate/stack the court.. Like most other issues…. He’s a staunch proponent of state’s rights and believes it should be an issue for the people to decide, not lawyers and judges. Let the chips fall as they may.

Yeah… I know. For some reason isolationist theories are a tough sell these days. Niall Ferguson, huh? Well… I’ll be frank with you…. I like some of what he has to say, {especially relating to Economics} but I see him much in the same mold of his American counterparts, Michael Ledeen and William Krystal. I also might add that he’s a Rothschild sycophant/follower, and I have severe problems with anyone who holds a monopoly on all the central banks in Europe where they print all the paper. LMAO!!!!

I think the policy aims are the same, but I think the basis of his argument is different from what Ledeen and Kristol are saying.  I'm not sure I've ever heard Ledeen and Kristol draw the comparison with the British Empire in the 19th century, for example.

That said, I hear ya

Yeah, I tend to agree with that.  But who would you put at the top of the ticket?  You think McCain would settle for a VP slot?  He's quite the egomaniac.  They might spin it as some kind of co-Presidency, I guess, with Rice drawing on her SecState experience as the foreign policy chief, and McCain as the domestic dude.  It might explain why he's risking alienating his base with his immigration position and the gang of 14 and all of the other things that have conservatives so ticked off at him.

I want John McCain Pres, Cornel West as Vice President, not because Cornel is less awesome, but as vice he'd have less chance of being shot dead.
Yes, I'm dreaming with that thought, but it's better than pondering the current nightmare I'm living with... M

I'm not so sure about the "less chance of being shot" with respects to West lol. And why in the world would he and McCain want to have anything to do with the other?

I honestly think both would laugh at the idea of being partnered, their ideologies are so far apart. What is it about Prof West that you think he would bring to the White House?

I figure McCain would bring the brain and brawn and West would bring the heart and brain to the operation.   When I think of a humane person, and how we need more of that in the world, I think of what I've always read in West's books.  M
