I literally just found out about this like an hour ago, because I was searching his name for another reason, and up pops his head in a fucking mug shot. Click, and story on fucking murder. Doesn't your lease have a provision that sub-letting either isn't allowed or is subject to approval of the owners? Most standard leases do. Your contract is most likely with the original person, however, if you accepted rent, you may be stuck for a bit...but the advice given here is correct, state law varies widely on landlord/tenant issues, contact an attorney first thing tomorrow and if you have extended a lease agreement to the new guy, revoke the offer.
