The fact that Atlantis will be retiring is just part of what happens to fleet vehicles when they age and is to be expected. What's sad is that the US human spaceflight program has no replacement vehicle ready to immediately take its place. Atlantis will be turned around to be made flight-ready, to be used as a rescue shuttle should one of the two remaining missions run into problems. There's also the possibility that it'll be used for one or two additional ISS supply runs next year but that's not for certain. At least Atlantis will be able to join its predecessor, Enterprise, in retirement... intact.
