Partial success is better than nothing. But why wasn't the technology to deal with this type of problem developed before drilling that deep?

Because nobody made them. It's just that simple.

I guess only 10-15% was staying down there.

Have you watched the video feed?  That pipe looks like kleenex now.

God, I hope I'm wrong, but I had a thought earlier today. That mud is abrasive - I wonder if hundreds of thousands of gallons of that abrasive slurry blasting through the pipe at thousands of pounds per square inch is eating it away? This was a concern earlier just from the sand that naturally occurs in the formation. I can't help wondering if they're just sandblasting away what's left of their wellhead.

Damn. They didn't even get the amount of mud needed right?

Not to defend BP, but they may be running through it faster than they'd expected because the leak is larger than they'd planned for. At any rate, I just found out that they have about 50,000 barrels of it out there, or 2 million gallons. That should keep them going until it either works or until they give up on it, and if for some reason they do need  it they've got more standing by on shore, 45 miles away.

You mean the free market didn't take care of this?

The exception that proves the rule, I'm sure!

Yeah, by the time they're through writing the checks for this one, they're going to be wishing they could get a do-over. I think it's almost a certainty that $75 million cap will be voided because of negligence and/or violation of regulations, which means BP could easily be paying out in the tens of billions of dollars before this is all over. But hey, they saved a half a million by installing a used blowout preventer instead of a new one, so at least it's not a total loss for the poor bastards.
