Actually, SocratesNot, I did all of the things you mention above, and it had nothing to do with an M/s relationship. All of those things were part of the 9 years I spent in training for the esoteric path on which I teach. Everything had to be approved by my teachers, they read my mail before I got to see it (and if they thought it would be too much of a distraction, it was put aside... only true emergencies where my presence/involvement would actually make a difference were exempted, and you'd be surprised how few "true emergencies" there really are)... No TV, movies, hobbies, music -- even what I ate and the schedule I kept were designed to narrow my focus to my esoteric studies.

I find it interesting that people in our culture find this behavior so controversial in this generation. Such quests and immersions used to be considered an important part of one's personal development... from Catholic confirmation education to Scout badge-earning to ministry training to sorority/fraternity hazing, all of these are designed to pull the focus inward to the individual and the specific person/group in question.

Calla, this behavior is controversial, because it is very cult-like. And there are many destructive cults out there. And even those that are not destructive usually engage in
practices that can't be justified.
Of all the things that can be controlled, I only really hate control of information and knowledge.
This reminds me of the times of the Inquisition and their book burning practices.
You say, for 9 years they controlled all the information you receive.
This means that you are automatically cut of from all the other viewpoints and philosophies. They are either secure that only they know the Truth,
and that all the others are ignorant; or they are actually insecure and don't want you exposed to any information that can change or challenge your opinions or attitudes
about them.

So, let's suppose that you were in some sort of Buddhist cult.
In this period you weren't able to get in contact with any non-Buddhist philosophies and religions, such as Islam, Hinduism, Christianity, Judaism, Western Philosophy etc.

The problem with cults is that most of them are full of shit and most of them use some sort of brainwashing.
All the religions that are secure about themselves will not prohibit reading materials that can challenge their views. It's up to you to believe or not.
If they restrict you from any information you are not able to make fully informed decisions.

I would like to suggest a website for you: The Ross Institute Internet Archive for the Study of Destructive Cults, Controversial Groups and Movements.

RedMagic1 -> RE: Slavery is bullshit (5/30/2010 7:36:39 AM)

I'm going to found a cult.  My requirements for members are:

1. Stay online 16-20 hours per day.
2. Never go on dates.
3. Masturbate to sexual fantasies that make me feel uncomfortable about myself.
4. Type thousands of words instead of spending time with human being in real life.

Is there anyone here who meets these strict qualifications of membership?

Jeffff -> RE: Slavery is bullshit (5/30/2010 7:39:13 AM)

Red.... you'e a masochist.... I never knew...:)

zephyroftheNorth -> RE: Slavery is bullshit (5/30/2010 8:01:25 AM)

Sounds like a plan, Red. One thing though, I would call it a "club", cult has so many negative connotations.

I would say many man many many many many many many many people here. Does it matter the gender because Jeff is a classic example. Is there a 'does not know how to spell' clause? Maybe you could get all your members to drink a really special kool-aid too! Husha husha! And they all fall down!

Jeffff -> RE: Slavery is bullshit (5/30/2010 8:33:11 AM)

hc?... I am never uncomfortable when I masturbate!

I still think there is awesome information here and I stand behind my begging too!

mmmmmm indeed information eloquently expressed has caused me to pause... either that or it was the groveling like a slut possesed that has my attention ;)

I just might have to reconsider this yarn thing... with little more begging of course!

Is that really so complicated? Tis bluuuuuuuuuue.

You one-true-wayer. Your blue is not my blue. What is blue? Heck, prove it's blue!

And so on and so forth.

Of course not. 'Blue' does not exist outside your brain. Leading to your next question:

quote:

What is blue?
Blue is the information display signal the processing bit of your brain (forget what it's called) provides when it recieves signals from your retina indicating that certain frequencies of light have entered your eye.

quote:

Heck, prove it's blue!
Easy. Gimme a spectrometer, a sensitive enough probe and ten minutes or so. And preferably someone who can read vernier scales without giving themselves a headache.

"It comes down to the fact that you supply the blue, and they supply the other colors and mix them with your blue, and maybe there's some blue left in the painting and maybe there isn't. Maybe there wasn't supposed to be any there in the first place. So have some fun and make a good blue and walk away.”

SocratesNot,

Having periodic bands on the Internet and TV ain't so bad. Yes, there are many Pro's to using the internet and watching TV even.

Some point in time give it a try, for yourself. What happens might blow your mind. TV and the internet are very distracting, and people will often put shows and websites ahead of other priorities or personal goals and tasks.

As much as the internet can be informative, it also can be extremely disinformative or misleading. Depends upon the website, the authors of the content and etc.

LOL, well done, VC. I believe you're referring to the extrastriate cortex.

I did give it a try. From January 27th 2008, to April 6th 2008, I not only did not get online, not even for a second, but also, I did not use computer at all.
And I felt great. I was focused on other things in my life and I socialized more than I usually do.

However, I still don't think it is wise to permanently ban using Internet to someone.
It would be much better to restrict the time spent online, to for example 1-2 hours a day.
But banning it completely can make someone deprived of some very important information.
The Internet is very democratic and it opens ones mind vastly.
I would be much more ignorant on many topics if I never used the Internet.
While net addiction is bad, it is also bad to avoid using Internet at all.

The worst kind of torture is restriction of access to information.
Not because it feels bad. Actually, it can feel very good! (Which my example proved)
Instead it is bad because it closes your mind to various influences. It makes you brainwashed, closed minded, it prevents you from
knowing what is going on in the world and adaption to changes in the world.
It prevents you form contact to wide variety of different opinions and viewpoints.
And it prevents your knowledge from growing freely.

So, bottom line - restricting the time spent online - yes!
Permanent ban on the Internet - absolutely no!

Restricting access to any other sources of information such as newspapers, television, books, etc - absolutely no!

The worst kind of dictatorship and totalitarianism is censure and control of knowledge and information.

Hmmmmmm, i've put lots of thought into it, but unfortunately, i have only been able to come up with two names that i can recommend for membership.  [:D]

Considering what passes for "leather" in certain parts of Los Angeles, yarn would be a significant improvement.
