DarkSteven -> What the heck is with the Arab countries? (5/30/2010 9:36:44 AM)

Back in the Dark Ages, Christianity was mired in corruption.  Torquemada was converting heathens by force in Spain.  At that point, the Muslims in the Ottoman Empire, which at that time was the pinnacle of open, intellectual thought, issued an invitation to the Jews.  Sephardic Jews flocked there in droves.

The Arabs were the best seafarers of their time, and devised algebra.  Charlemagne, considered an enlightened ruler of the age, was a midget compared to the Arab world and could barely read or write.

So what the hell happened?

Present day Arabs live in a world chained to the past. They spend years studying a misogynistic, xenophobic corruption of the Quran, and would be completely destitute if not for oil.  They are responsible for no technological development, although Israel, their hated neighbor, has phenomenal amounts of innovation.

What the hell happened?

My pastor says that Islam is all about ego.

I am not sure how that fits.

The rise and fall of .................
There seems to be a finite period of time for any civilisation to remain on top - and the Arabic community has done their dash.
I find it sad that a population known for its tolerance, is now the most intolerant community in the world. What the Arabs have given the world knowlege base is priceless, but apparently , nothing more will come from them.

Pity.

HUH???

you sure skipped a zillion steps and edited that to the point its not even factual.

is-rah-el was not the home of the zionists who occupy it today.

Who the hell was it?  Hertzl and gurion that brokered a deal with england for world war 1 to give the jews a state which even today is scorned by the orthodox jews as a travesty against G-D.

kiwisub, your post pretty much says what I feel.  And I was incorrect to paint only modern day Arabs as being backwards when by WW2, they were already cloistered and required Lawrence of Arabia to get any cohesion from them.

dcnovice -> RE: What the heck is with the Arab countries? (5/30/2010 9:45:58 AM)

Fareed Zakaria touched on some of this in his essay The Politics of Rage: Why They Hate Us.

TheHeretic -> RE: What the heck is with the Arab countries? (5/30/2010 9:49:24 AM)

Global warming and ultimately trade routes that bypassed their asses? The only abundant natural resource being useless until the invention of the internal combustion engine?

I dunno, Steve. It's a good question.

kiwisub12 -> RE: What the heck is with the Arab countries? (5/30/2010 9:49:36 AM)

As far as i can tell, with what i remember, the fall of the Ottoman empire marked the death of the Arabic community as a world leader ... in anything.

thishereboi -> RE: What the heck is with the Arab countries? (5/30/2010 9:50:15 AM)

That's a good question and I have no idea why either. However I am pretty sure there will be some on here who will come and explain how it's all the fault of Bush and the US[8D]

This thread will be 17 pages by tonight.

It is what it is.

Isn't the line that a lot of historians take that the Ottoman Empire got a running start from Byzantium after the collapse of the Eastern Empire, then pissed it away in pursuit of religious and cultural purity? The burning of the library at Alexandria and all of that business...

What I would like to know is what makes you think they are backwards?  Because their culture is different than yours?

Racism in the guise of culturalism

RO-  it might help to explain things better.

It appears as a slap upon the Jews- when what you mean is the KCZAZARs.

??

yeh the political arm of jude goes directly against the prescription of G-D and was created by zionists not orthodox jews.

Orthodox jews protest at literally every event against the state of is-ra-el.

The bigger problem with this thread is that it appears to promote cultural genocide.

Screw the other guys religion all religions must come into our definition of what life must be.

Which of course is the religion of state.

Funny! I don't recall anywhere in this very short thread where anyone said that the Arab culture should be killed off. In fact, the guist of what has been posted so far seems to be questioning why the culture itself seems to be imploding. No-one is advocating they lose what little they have left from the good old days, its more of "why did they lose it".

and no-one else has mentioned religion. Just you.
The discussion so far is cultural.

Look at how racist they are. They are xenophobic and distrust outside influences, while the West assimilates and welcomes them.  Also, the Arab states have not made any technological advances for centuries.  As Fareed Zakariah also mentions in the article dcnovice mentioned, they produce hardly any books either.

Upon reading Zakariah's article, I have this feeling that the great foundation of capitalism - work and you get rewarded for it - has not hit the Arab world. There are those who get money from family holdings or oil sales, and that seems it.  I have never heard of any Arab owned company (not in the Arab countries - there are some in the US).  I'm not sure if that is because of the difficulty in raising capital there, or just plain not understanding the value of work.

I'm not sure how you come to speak for G_d.  But since He authorized the taking of Canaan, I'm not sure that He opposed the state of Israel.

Orthodox Jews are defined by religious belief, not political worldview.

I agree with you that Israel is a religion of state, but I'm not sure what the rest of that snippet is saying.

what do you think happens when you wipe out their religious traditions?

BACKWARDS as some may feel they are?

america is becoming more like germany and you see it before your very eyes, just ask Rich.

any time someone starts a thread about how backwards assed some other culture is it carries the underlying message that its a very bad thing.

Look how mistreated the women are after all!

Lets have the good guys america go in and give them a wonderful "democracy"!

yeh!!

That will fix it!  LMAO

The racism, sadly, isn't half as pronounced as the misogyny and homophobia.
I think Al Jazaree is an Arab owned company, and that seems to be doing pretty well. That said, it is based in Qatar rather than (say) Saudi Arabia or Syria, so that might have something to do with that.

kiwisub12 -> RE: What the heck is with the Arab countries? (5/30/2010 10:47:44 AM)

Ah .... who advocated wiping out their religious traditions?

as i previously said, this thread at this point is cultural, not religious.
If you want a religious thread, start your own, and prepare to be lonely. a
