I tend to look at this debate (the gay marriage one, not what the thread is about to be) as one that could be easily settled if you took out the fanatics that are extreme on each end and just deal with the folks that are more condensed in the bell curve.  It would be My opinion that good number of same sex couples out there would be completely content if they could have a civil union that would give them the same rights, privileges, and status as any other het couple under the law.  The hang up comes from the word marriage, which really is a word based on religion.  You've got gays that are so obsessed about the word marriage and religious folks that are hung up on it for different reasons.  It's kind of hard, legally, to screw with someone else's faith, even if you don't agree with it.

I'm hugely in favor of gays having the right to civil union that gives them all of the same rights under the law.  On a personal level, I would love to see this happen.  It gives Me hope that, someday, the poly folks might just be next.  Unfortunately, I doubt I'm going to see that in My lifetime.

LP- that is not fully true.

A civil union that contained the 1000ish things that marriage would not be acceptable to the anti-marriage crowd.

It is not about the word--"marriage".     Not entirely.

You did notice that I said take the extremists off both sides of the range of the issue.  I don't think this is one of those issues where you can have everyone happy because no solution is going to do that.  The best that you're going to come up with is some form of compromise that the majority of folks can find "acceptable enough". 

Are there people out there that won't be happy if the same legal rights are given solely based on this being a same sex union?  Yes.  Are there people out there who have become such fundamentalists on the issue that, even if they got the same rights as a het union, they would not be happy unless it was specifically called "marriage".  Yes.

The sad part about this, to Me, is that none of those people seem to realize they only make the situation worse.  We could have been long past this.

I guess I should thank kittin for bringing that thread up.  I think it's the only time I have ever even commented in a "gay marriage" thread.  This makes the second, in six years.

You might want to read that entire thread, and the one about conducting a discussion ("Disagreeing without being disagreeable") that came out of it.  I think both of them were pretty good.

Obviously, it left an impression on kittinsol.  One of my missions was accomplished.  [:D]

No, the US Constitution does NOT state that. 

It is however stated in the second section of the Declaration of Independence:

We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

The government has nothing to do with those rights.  You will need to apply to your creator. 

I am curious as to why you would want a reputation for controversy.  That seems a bit odd to me.
